About

Agnus Dei by the Spanish artist Francisco de Zurbarán is both an extraordinary still life painting and a work of profound religious sentiment. The inscription on the ledge below the animal reads “tanquam agnus” (like a lamb), a reference to Biblical passages that liken Christ to a sacrificial animal: “He was led as a sheep to the slaughter, and like a lamb dumb before the shearer, so opened he not his mouth.”
