After the Singles Tour in 1998, the band members initially withdrew and dedicated themselves to their families. Martin Gore started writing new songs in 1999 but lacked motivation and inspiration. He therefore invited his friend and musician Paul Freegard and producer Gareth Jones, who had worked with Depeche Mode since the mid-1980s, to his private studio in Santa Barbara, California. With their (especially moral) support, Gore managed to record demos, which he finally introduced to the rest of the band members. The actual work on the album started in the middle of 2000 after Mark Bell could still be hired as a producer.
Immediately after the album was released, Depeche Mode started the worldwide Exciter Tour. The two concerts at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy were filmed by Anton Corbijn and released in 2002 as a live DVD One Night in Paris. After completing the tour, the band members devoted themselves to their own projects. Martin Gore released his second solo album with Counterfeit² in 2003, while Dave Gahan himself wrote songs for his debut Paper Monsters for the first time. Andrew Fletcher marketed the British band Client through his own label Toast Hawaii. It was not until 2005 that Depeche Mode returned with a new album, Playing the Angel.
