La litote e...

Questa figura retorica viene usata per attenuare od anche per enfatizzare un concetto: per attenuare, quando l’effetto di un’espressione enunciata in modo diretto può risultare offensiva o troppo cruda o presuntuosa, es: dire non bello anziché usare l’aggettivo brutto. per rafforzare, quando si vuole sottolineare un concetto, es. affermare per i suoi figli ha fatto non pochi sacrifici per dire che si è sacrificato molto; per porre in rilievo con ironia ciò che si afferma, es. per definire una persona non particolarmente acuta si dice : non è un’aquila oppure non è un genio.

La parola litote deriva dal greco litótēs, che significa "attenuazione, diminuzione". Della deminuitio (questo il nome della figura retorica in ambito latino) si trova traccia fin nei manuali di classici dell’antichità latina: nella famosa Retorica a Erennio è presentata come una tecnica raffinata, che enuncia indirettamente quanto in realtà si vorrebbe dire.
