Hasta ahora, Bola Johnson sólo ha figurado en los márgenes de la escena musical de Lagos de finales de los sesenta y principios de los setenta. Puede que nunca tuviese la determinación, la longevidad profesional o el catálogo de titanes como Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade or Victor Olaiya, pero su obra trazó su propia y magnífica ruta a través de la música popular de aquella época. Su maravillosa voz adornó todos los estilos de su repertorio, desde las dulces cimas melódicas del highlife y palm wine hasta el soulful skanking del Afro-blues/funk y Afrobeat; su trompeta al rojo vivo se abre camino hasta tu alma ansiosa; sus temas vibran con ganchos pegadizos y ritmos ondulantes; Bola se encuentra igual de cómodo componiendo en cualquier estilo… Funk? Another golden compilation from AA! Great introduction to Afro-Colombian psychedelia via the Discos Machuca back catalogue. These songs are full of infectious percussion, trance-inducing rhythms, sun-soaked melodies, and hauntingly beautiful vocals. Hard to chose a standout track as the whole album is a masterpiece. it very much reminded me of late Augustus Pablo digital productions, ''Blowing with the Wind'' seems like a follow up or close cousin though Mergia's work came five years earlier. Markus Bader
