Absentia to End With Season 3 at Amazon — Read Stana Katic’s Farewell
Absentia will indeed be absent from Amazon Prime’s lineup moving forward: The Stana Katic drama series is ending with its previously released third season.
Katic broke the news herself in a tweet on Friday, explaining that “although we’ve danced with the idea of continuing the tale, Absentia was always meant to be only three seasons, and I couldn’t think of a better note to end on… for any person on this planet, but especially [Katic’s character] Emily and her loved ones.”
Absentia starred Katic as Emily Byrne, an FBI agent who, after being declared dead in absentia, tried to reclaim her family, identity and innocence when she became the prime suspect in a string of murders. In Season 3 — which dropped on July 17, 2020 — Emily and her ex-husband, Special Agent Nick Durand, had no choice but to intervene when an international criminal case hit too close to home, and Nick’s life was endangered. While serving out the final days of her FBI suspension, Emily raced against time to save Nick, uncovering a larger and more complex conspiracy in the process.
“When they asked me in January 2017 if I was ready to spend three years in Bulgaria shooting a cable TV series, I had no idea what I was in for,” Katic wrote on Friday. “I could never have imagined the creative partnerships and the friendships that would form and enrich my life. Three seasons was the perfect amount of space for a beautiful, complicated and wonderfully fulfilling journey.”
After thanking Absentia‘s cast, crew and producers, Katic also expressed her gratitude to its viewers. “It is because of YOU that our show was a great success for its broadcasters,” she continued. “It’s because of YOU that we get to entertain you and be storytellers. And whatever projects this tribe of rebel storytellers goes to next, I hope you’ll follow them all.”
The series marked Katic’s first TV gig since ABC’s Castle, from which she was unceremoniously dismissed at the end of its eighth season — only for ABC to reverse course and cancel the show altogether weeks later. In a May 2020 interview with Australia’s Daily Telegraph, four years after the controversy, Katic admitted the “entire experience” left her “confused” and “hurt.”
She added, though, that “time has passed and I am so thankful to have been a part of that project [and] for it to have affected as many people as it did. People loved [Katic’s Kate and Nathan Fillion’s Rick as a] couple and loved the story we told, loved all of those characters.”
I just checked on this last night after finally finishing S3. Disappointed. Was looking forward to seeing where they went in S4.
I agree, a fourth season would have tied up a few loose ends, but a great show never less. Can’t wait to see what is next for Stana.
Trying to pass of Bulgaria for Boston was always absurd in that it took me right out of the story so many times.
Agreed, it was ridiculous and obvious. If it wasn’t for Stana Katic, the show probably would’ve been unwatchable. But with her, I did like it enough watch the whole thing.
Agree! I would never have watched it had it not been for Stana Katic. Stana is better that this type of series.
Don’t ever go to the theater to watch a live performance. You don’t have the imagination for it. Boston as a city and place played no role in who the characters were in Absentia nor the plot. it hardly mattered. The crew did a remarkable job with location shooting, cinematography, action scenes, sound, lighting, music. Direction was superb and so was all the acting. And here you are bothered by it not being filmed in Boston.
Sad Absentia will be ending! One of my favorite shows!
Stana Katic would have been good first woman boss for new NCIS Hawaii. Now that she’s out of a job they could do a reboot of Castle. That was a good show.
Unless ABC cancels The Rookie that is very unlikely, not to mention the never ending stream of gossip about how Stana and Nathan don’t get on.
The reboot would be called Beckett as the original should have been. Castle is out of the picture sooooo who needs Nathan?

Never gonna happen with the original cast. If even only 50% of the rumors were true, too many wounds to reopen. It’s pretty obvious the network sided with Nathan Fillion, placing all the blame on Stana. I personally hope Castle never comes back.

No cliffhanger. There is resolution of the seasons’ major arcs.

I am sad to hear it’s ending as I only recently found it and have watched all but the final two episodes of season 3 (which will be watched tomorrow). I am glad it doesn’t end on a cliffhanger. I loved Castle but the ending (which I know wasn’t really planned) was horrible and a slap in the face to the cast and viewers.
Stana is an AMAZING actress and I am sure she will land another role that has us all tuning in.
I figured that there wouldn’t be another season and I’m fine with that.
It ended alright, it was sort of left open for another season, but I didn’t see a need to continue the show. Not every series needs 5, 10, 20+ seasons.
I’d give anything for some kind of Castle reunion. Don’t know if there’s any truth to the backstage rumor mill, but even if there is, none of the players involved have ever voiced anything but respect to their fellow actors publically. Even if just a guest spot on The Rookie, I’d love to see Katic join Fillion onscreen once more.
I think she’s fantastic, but this wasn’t my kind of show. Selfishly, I hope that whatever she chooses to do next is a bit lighter like Castle was.
A really great series. I will miss it. There are still a lot of stones left to turn over. A shame we won’t get to see it happen.

I watched the first two seasons as they came out but just finished s3 now. Overall, I loved the entire series; it was really well written, they did a good job covering and giving resolution to the major plot points per season and Stana’s acting was incredible but when it got to the final episode in s3, it kind of felt a bit thrown together for a conclusion but a conclusion without resolution with Nick and her son. I think the series would have ended on a more full-filling note had she been able to reunite with them that six months later. Like you said, it was missing that full circle vibe. She was taken from her husband and son and now she’s just going to be out of their life by choice? Meh. That was the only thing that didn’t really work for me.

Sorry to see it end, but sometimes that’s the best thing. Comedy next? Get a strong script. One that is up to her talent.

I could’ve sworn I heard about this cancellation last year right after I finished Season 3. I don’t know why I thought this if it wasn’t officially canceled before now, but I’ve never expected it to return. Oh, well. No great loss, as the show just wasn’t going anywhere by the time the third season ended.

I’m so bummed! I’ll say it — I hope Stana and Mathew Le Nevez do something else together. That was one hell of an awesome pairing! I just have this sad feeling I’ll never see ether one of them again.

This was a great show.. i was so looking forward to a season 4. First Castle, now Absentia. I’m a big fan of both shows, but I’ve also become a big fan of Stana.
I’m seriously disappointed by the news, because I thought that we are going to get season 4 in Autumn as was written on one website that the execs have green-lit it. I wonder what changed…
I think for the first time in a show I was happy by the way they ended it. Cal and Emily, it’s I treat for me as a viewer to get that hope, it very rarely ends on a good note ( siren 🧞♀️ for example) so I’m upset for no more Emily and Cal adventures but I’m happy there off somewhere together making the world better in my head
I think they had a great chemistry onscreen and their FBI partnership was great to watch but I wasn’t a big fan of it crossing over into “romantic” territory. Especially considering they essentially wrote Nick and her son out of her life via. convenient plot point for their safety in order to make it so she could hook up with Cal in the end. I think that is my only beef in the entire series; the six months later should have had Emily being able to reunite with her son (ie. And Nick) so the show had more of a coming full circle closure. So the ending is a bit of a disappointment for me.
