Early Life

Born on March 28th, 1990, Laura Ruth Harrier is the daughter of Linda and Temujin Harrier. Her mother is of Polish/English descent, working as a speech pathologist, while her father is African-American and an insurance worker.

As a toddler, Harrier had a speech impediment that her mother helped fix. The speech impediment and Harrier’s shy nature inspired her mom Linda to sign her daughter up for acting classes, hoping it would boost her confidence levels and help her overcome speech difficulties. Ever since, Harrier has been enchanted by the world of acting.

Attending Evanston Township High School, she took drama classes and developed a love for fashion, evidenced by her being voted best-dressed in school. At 17, a location scout discovered Harrier and helped her start her modeling career.

After high school, she moved to New York to study art history but quickly decided to focus on modeling.

Career

It didn’t take long for Laura to attract attention in the modeling industry. Her career barely started when prestigious agencies took notice of her, and before she knew it, she was represented by industry leaders. She’s modeled for Vogue, Glamour, Elle, and Cosmopolitan, to name but a few. She was soon in Macy’s, ALDO’s, and Steve Madden’s campaigns. However, Laura found modeling to be less fulfilling than she had hoped, so she decided to put more effort into her acting career.

Starring in student films and commercials, she signed up for a two-year acting program at William Esper Studio and graduated in 2015.

For her first acting job, she landed a role as Destiny Evans in a single-season reboot of One Life to Live. Over the years, she starred in minor films and series including Unforgettable, The Last Five Years, and 4th Man Out. However, she considers her role in HBO’s unaired miniseries Codes of Conduct to be her first real acting job.

Her breakthrough was, however, alongside Tom Holland in Spider-Man: Homecoming. She took the role of Peter Parker’s love interest, Liz, loosely based on the eponymous character from the comics. Unsurprisingly, the film was a groundbreaking success, amassing $880 million worldwide and skyrocketing both Holland’s and Harrier’s careers.

Since Spider-Man, Laura’s starred in BlacKkKlansman, receiving nominations for Black Reel Award and Screen Actors Guild Award. She took a lead role in Jamie Adams’ Balance, Not Symmetry, and has starred in Netflix’s miniseries Hollywood.

Not putting her modeling career on hold, Laura joined brand campaigns for Calvin Klein, Louis Vuitton and became the ambassador of Bulgari.
