South San Francisco, CA – American Technologies Network Corp. (ATN), makers of military, law enforcement, security and outdoor night vision and thermal applications, have developed the latest advancement in thermal imaging technology with the ATN TICO-series of thermal clip-ons.

The TICO-Series mounts in front of a day-time scope and enables thermal vision in day or nighttime operations.

There is no shift of impact, no need to re-zero or change of eye relief. Every individual ATN TICO-Series is tested and aligned to the highest tolerances for perfect alignment every time it’s attached.

The ATN-TICO Series are lightweight and will not affect the balance of the firearm. It is built rugged to withstand a variety of severe operating conditions. The housing is made from aircraft grade aluminum 6061 T6 with a hard-anodized coating to prevent corrosion and abrasion. A quick-release MIL-STD 1913 Picatinny mount allows for immediate attachment and detachment. The display is a color OLED matrix and has video output capabilities. The objective lens is a 50mm with full MIL-SPEC and DLC coating to prevent scratches and dust.

The ATN TICO-Series is available in two models; the TICO-336 with a 336 x 256 microbolometer sensor and a frame rate of 30 or 60 Hz, and the TICO-640 with a 640 x 480 sensor and 30 Hz frame rate. MSRP is $6,195.00.

Minneapolis, MN –-(Ammoland.com)- Range Systems, a leading manufacturer of live fire shooting products for the military, law enforcement and consumer markets, introduces their new line of ThermBright passive thermal animal targets.

In 2012, Range Systems was appointed the exclusive distributor for ThermBright targets. Since then, the target offering has expanded from its core Military infantry and vehicle targets to include bulls eye, hog, deer, and coyote targets.

The animal targets are life-sized, and when viewed through a thermal imager or night vision device, they retain a crisp, clear, life-like image of the animal. With the tremendous need to address the growing hog population, night hunting, using thermal imaging scopes, has also increased, and with ThermBright hog targets, hunters can now sight in their expensive equipment on the thermal imaging targets before they head out hunting.

ThermBright targets utilize a proprietary advanced coating process that effectively reflects the cold energy of space when tilted backwards by 10 degrees. Using any in-service sights including night vision and fusion sights, the targets work effectively in daylight or at night, and will work in all weather conditions. What sets ThermBright targets apart from other thermal targets is they do not require any power source or batteries. They are also far more effective than using hand warmers taped to a target. The sturdy construction of ThermBright targets will endure 2,000 rounds of small arm fire before thermal degradation begins to occur. Additionally, patch kits are available to extend target life.

The MSRP on ThermBright Passive Thermal Targets ranges from $35.00 to $600.00. Hog and coyote targets cost $55 each.

Torrey Pines Logic

San Diego, CA -(Ammoland.com)- Utilizing a FLIR core, Torrey Pines Logic has developed an affordable thermal imager that is no larger than a mini red dot sight.

The T10 goes beyond weapons applications as it is both a commercial infrared camera as well as a “thermal red dot sight” – equally useful in both applications/situations during all lighting conditions, including total darkness. There are three models available: two consumer models for residential/hunting/outdoor and a ruggedized military/law enforcement model.

The T10 mini-thermal imagers models T10-S (50° FOV, 9-Hz video), T10-N (25° FOV, 9-Hz video) and T10-M (50° FOV, 30-Hz video) offer a robust feature set commonly found in more expensive devices. All models offer on-board image processing, manual and automatic NUC (Non-Uniformity Correction) capability, temperature read-out, battery read-out and protection, auto power-save and flexible mounting options: Picatinny rail/wrist strap/user-handle mount and more.

The 9-Hz units are ideal for hunters and commercial uses and are export ready and the 30-Hz units support more sophisticated domestic user needs. For law enforcement and military, the wide angle units augment agency capabilities conducting search operations The standard models (T10-S and T10-N) and military model (T10-M) differ in a number of ways: The military model refreshes at 30 Hz, versus 9 Hz for the standard models, has a protective shroud and utilizes a quick detach mounting system. The T10-S and T10- N weigh 50 grams without a battery, with the more rugged T10-M weighing 109 grams.

The weapon mountable T10-M is durable enough to handle high recoil firearms such as a shotgun firing high powered slugs. All models utilize a single transverse mounted CR123 battery with 8+ hours expected life. The T10 meets IP67 waterproofing standards, which is 1 meter for 30 minutes.

The range of the thermal display is excellent considering its small form factor. All models have multiple display modes: white hot, black hot, NV green and color. The field-of-view for the T10-N is 25° while the T10-S and T10-M sport a 50° viewing angle.

Night Vision vs Thermal Optics – What is the Ideal Setup?

TNVC Night Vision

TNVC Night Vision
TNVC Night Vision

USA – -(Ammoland.com)- This month, I want to address a question that we get several times a day: What is the ideal setup for hunting?

The answer is going to greatly depend on the type of hunting you intend to do. Night Vision (Image Intensifiers) and Thermal have different performance capabilities. Night vision is better for identification while thermal is better for detection.

On their own, they work great, but in tandem, they are unstoppable. Before we get carried away, keep in mind that I am addressing an ideal setup.

Yes, this gear is expensive and buying everything at once is not in most people’s budget. But, this is an article about the gear to look at over the course of several years or as you can afford it.

The ideal setup for a hunter will actually cross over into the ideal setup for those in law enforcement, military, and SOF. I like to keep my night vision on my head; hands free and always ready. This allows me to easily patrol in the field, walk, run, climb, negotiate obstacles, etc. Since it is on my head, I don’t have to keep my weapon shouldered in order to use my night vision.

My weapon will have an infrared laser attached. Night vision goggles are strictly observation tools. The laser is the aiming device.

You should not be deploying a firearm under goggles if you don’t have a laser. It won’t be fast or ideal.

AN/PSQ-20 Dual Sensor Night Vision Goggle
AN/PSQ-20 Dual Sensor Night Vision Goggle

The head-mounted night vision goggle gives you the ability to clearly see and understand your surroundings.

A lot of guys ask about head-mounting a thermal imager. I am not fan of this. Thermal sees in absolute contrast. Most of the thermal imagers available on the civilian market are not going to provide the detail or be able to distinguish terrain features and variations as well as a night vision device.

Sure, some thermals can accomplish this, but they are few and far between. Even then, walking around with thermal on your head is a good way to turn your ankle, fall down a hill, or trip over a tree root. If you don’t hurt yourself, you’re at least going to look like an ass clown in front of your buddies!

I suggest having a separate thermal imager. Proper patrolling; whether hunting or war-fighting is to move a certain distance and then stop, look, listen, smell. Rinse and repeat. During the intervals, you will use the thermal to scan for potential threats or targets.

Since thermal excels at detection, this is the perfect use. And, now that more affordable thermal weapon scopes are becoming available, you can slap one of these on your rifle and immediately engage a target if you come across something close by. If nothing is around, flip your goggle back down and continue on the patrol/hunt.

Using night vision and thermal imagers in conjunction insures you have all your bases covered. You can effectively move, scan, detect, identify, and engage. Obviously, this technology does not replace good field craft, but it certainly gives you as much of an edge as you can get.

Wilsonville, OR -(AmmoLand.com)- FLIR Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: FLIR) announced two compact thermal camera products that will be showcased at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this week: the FLIR Scout TK thermal vision monocular and the FLIR TG130 spot thermal camera.

Both products feature FLIR’s revolutionary low-cost Lepton microcamera core that has made thermal imaging technology more accessible for applications at home, work, and play.

The FLIR Scout TK thermal vision monocular, the smallest and lightest camera in the FLIR Scout series, is developed specifically for outdoor enthusiasts. Pocket-sized and designed for one-handed use, the Scout TK allows consumers to see in total darkness and become better aware of their surroundings. With more than five hours of battery life, the Scout TK detects body heat of people and animals, or helps identify key landmarks. Whether camping, fishing, or hiking, the rugged Scout TK provides outdoor enthusiasts with the power to fully explore and visualize their surroundings regardless of the environmental conditions.

The FLIR TG130 spot thermal camera is an entry-level camera for a broad spectrum of home and small business applications. By simply pointing the TG130 at an object, anyone can identify energy and temperature-related issues within and around a structure. From finding drafts, detecting heat loss around doors and windows, or locating areas of missing insulation, the TG130 pinpoints problems and helps users increase a home’s energy efficiency.

“Our two latest Lepton-based products help deliver on FLIR’s mission to provide people a sixth sense to enhance personal awareness and improve productivity in their mission, work, or personal lives,” said Andy Teich, CEO and President of FLIR. “We are excited to introduce these two new products that are bringing the power of thermal imaging to a whole new class of customers.”

Wilsonville, OR -(AmmoLand.com)- FLIR Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: FLIR) announced the FLIR Scout III today at Shot Show in Las Vegas, the latest addition to its popular FLIR Scout series of outdoor thermal vision devices.

In addition, FLIR is also showcasing the FLIR Scout TK, the smallest, lightest and most affordable thermal monocular in the Scout series that was first unveiled at the recent 2016 Consumer Electronics Show.

Exploring the wilderness at night is challenging, but the FLIR Scout III and FLIR Scout TK help by displaying heat emitted by people or animals, even in total darkness. Because you can also see landscapes and objects like trees, rivers, and trails, the Scout thermal monoculars provide powerful extra visual capabilities for a range of activities, including searching for a lost hunter or pet, observing nocturnal wildlife, or retrieving downed game.

Designed for hunters and professional outfitters who demand more performance, the FLIR Scout III builds on the success of the Scout II series with a choice of three resolutions—240, 320, and 640—and true-to-life video speeds of up to 60 Hz. Higher frame rates result in video that is smoother, more crisp, and easier to interpret in the field. The Scout III can detect a human-sized object at over 1,200 yards away at its maximum range. With such resolution and clarity, hunters can evaluate the movement of game during the preseason or track predators year-round.

The Scout TK offers outdoor enthusiasts the ability to see in thermal at a distance of over 100 yards. With more than five hours of battery life, the Scout TK — the first Scout series monocular to offer the ability to store thermal images onboard — allows users to store 1,000 JPEG images or approximately four hours of video. Whether fishing, hiking or camping, the Scout TK makes a perfect outdoor companion, from the backcountry to your backyard.

“Our latest additions to the Scout series, the FLIR Scout III and FLIR Scout TK, offer outdoor professionals and enthusiasts alike unparalleled thermal performance at any budget,” said Kevin Tucker, General Manager of FLIR’s Surveillance segment. “The ability to see in complete darkness enhances awareness and safety, and offers a way of experiencing the outdoors that no ordinary night vision technology can match.”

Both Scout TK and Scout III offer expanded color palette options to make it easier to see warmer objects in cool settings, including White/Black Hot, InstAlert, red, and Graded Fire, yellow with enhanced detail. Both thermal vision devices are rugged, weather-resistant and ergonomically-designed. They also offer enhanced digital processing that delivers the sharpest imagery in the toughest environments.

Applications:

  • See people, animals and objects in pitch dark
  • Identify key landmarks – trees, rivers, trails
  • Search for someone lost in the woods
  • Observe nocturnal wildlife
  • Personal and home security

Specifications:

FLIR
FLIR

WILSONVILLE, Ore.-(Ammoland.com)- It's safe to say that every cop knows about thermal-imaging devices, more commonly known as Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR). It’s a magical technology that lets them see through darkness, fog, dust and even works in the daytime. Rank-and-file officers know that having a FLIR device available would dramatically change the way they work, making their job both easier and safer.

Many in law enforcement think they’ll never have FLIR in their squad car; they believe the technology is too costly to be sitting on the passenger seat next to the binoculars, clipboard and that DVD his wife wanted him to drop off. The SWAT guys and the helicopter units may have access to thermal imaging, but that guy or gal cruising slowly down the street at 4 a.m. looking for trouble will probably never be so lucky.

That is, until now. Real street cops who make real street-cop salaries now have the ability to put FLIR with their gear and develop an entirely new sixth sense with which to monitor their beats and increase their situational awareness.

FLIR has been around since the 1960’s as classified military technology. Initially bulky, incredibly expensive and power-intensive, it eventually became more efficient, smaller, lighter, de-classified and today, much more affordable.

In fact, the least-expensive FLIR devices now rival the cost of the cheapest night vision devices (NVD). However, the difference in the two technologies is literally night and day.

NVD’s work by amplifying existing light and displaying the resulting image on a small screen. They work reasonably well, but NVD's have several serious drawbacks: they don’t work from dawn to dusk or anywhere there is bright light, they can’t see through fog, smoke or dust and most significantly, if the target is motionless or camouflaged, an NVD simply becomes a pricey spotting scope.

Using a monochrome setting on the affordable FLIR Scout TK, it was easy to quickly sweep a dark, moonless beach for suspicious people and objects. The large rectangle in the center of the image is a tent on the sand 100 yards away, which was invisible to the naked eye. Photo by Brent Wheat

Thermal imaging is significantly different. It has none of the drawbacks of NVD's with the added benefit of painting a glowing picture of hidden suspects. This is a dealmaker and lifesaver when facing the choice between thermal imaging and NVD's.

Consider searching a huge, dark, windowless warehouse after a break-in. After securing the perimeter, an officer and backup have a couple of choices: turn on the lights (if they can find and operate the electrical panel), walk around waving their flashlights (giving away their positions and potentially drawing fire), or wait for somebody to arrive who has been issued an NVD (if such a person is even available).

After the interminable wait for an NVD, the officer learns that the goggles weren’t worth the trouble; he or she can only see as far as the weak integral illuminator can reach in the total darkness. Ironically, their flashlights are too bright and make the goggles equally useless.

Now, consider the same scenario if one of the officers had possessed a personally owned thermal-imaging device: After slipping through the door, he or she is instantly alerted to two glowing apparitions burrowed in among the pipes at the far end of the pitch-black building. Their friendly district K9, Officer Jaws, gets to say Hello.

FLIR is useful in countless similar situations. In the city, one can look down a dark alley and instantly see all the warm-blooded creatures – good and otherwise – glowing and clearly highlighted in any number of user-selectable color palettes. For officers working in rural districts, people fleeing into woodlands or agricultural fields might as well be wearing a neon sign around their neck.

Are you sold yet? Of course, but there is still that little matter of cost since the daughter needs braces, the transmission in your wife’s car is making that funny noise again and you haven’t even sprung the idea about that new fishing boat. A thermal device is out of the question, right?

From 50 yards away in total darkness, a suspicious subject lurking inside a parking garage plainly stands out when viewed by FLIR’s sub-$600 Scout TK thermal imaging monocular. Photo by Brent Wheat

Actually, there are cost-effective thermal-imaging solutions that don’t require a cop to win the lottery. Some of the most popular and affordable devices on the market are the Scout Series of thermal imagers manufactured by industry leader, FLIR Systems, Inc. With a street price below $600, the Scout TK Pocket-Sized Thermal Vision Monocular is less expensive than many NVDs, while offering the expanded benefits and applications of thermal. They’re durable, too, so forget your worries about damage from fumbles or spills.

With the less-expensive units, you can't expect the same imaging quality as a helicopter-borne FLIR unit. But for the price, the Scout TK offers enough resolution to detect man-sized objects at over 100 yards, depending on local conditions. Such units make it easy to determine if that indistinct lump slouching next to a dumpster is a bad guy or a trash bag.

Moving up the cost scale gets you higher resolution, which allows target identification at a longer range. FLIR’s popular LS-XR handheld thermal monoculars are designed for law enforcement, and offer resolutions up to 640×480 that can ID a human-sized target at over 1,200 yards, or a small vehicle from over 2 miles away. With street prices between $2,600 and $6,400 per unit, the cost might prove challenging for an individual officer, but is certainly within the purchasing power of even the smallest department or unit. As with any gear or gadget, it pays to shop around, as actual prices can vary significantly from one retailer to another.

FLIR also offers versatile options like the all-new Q14; it’s the lightest and smallest full-featured FLIR thermal monocular available. Featuring FLIR’s new compact, uncooled Boson core, a thermal resolution of 640×480, and a fixed 19mm lens, the versatile new handheld FLIR Q14 also offers multiple mounting options for helmets, goggles, and weapons. These highly adaptpable, high-performance thermal-imaging units are expected to be available within the next few months and retail for under $2,000.

Not only can FLIR save an officer’s life, it can also save his or her job or reputation. All FLIR Scout Series, LS-XR and Q14 Thermal Vision Monoculars feature the ability to capture still images and video. IA or the DA, compelling video evidence is just an upload away.

Thermal imaging is one of those technologies that will eventually become a part of every cop's life. Fortunately, we've reached the point where motivated front-line officers don't have to wait for access to one of these life-saving devices. That’s great news for the good guys and gals on the thin blue line… and a nightmare for the two-legged predators who used to rule the night.
