Meet the hump-backed mammals of the desert! Introduce elementary kids to both species of camels, Bactrian and dromedaries, in this North American Spanish translation. Not many animals can thrive in the barren desert, but camels do it without breaking a sweat! Readers explore this desert dweller’s features and behaviors, including its desert adaptations and use for people, with STEM-appropriate text and gorgeous photography. An end folk tale adapted from Rudyard Kipling tells how the camel got its humps. A great nonfiction resource for Spanish-language learning and bilingual readers. Includes table of contents, index, same-page definitions, and further resources.

Reviews

A camel can drink an amazing fifty gallons of water per day. This and other general information about their diet, habitat, behaviors, and physical features can be found in this nonfiction introduction to the intriguing mammal. Read about how they survive in the desert or grassland. A small map indicates the regions where they reside. Color photographs with captions are located throughout the book and provide moderate support for the text. Vocabulary words appear in bold print within the text, and their definitions are located at the bottom of the page. Included in the book is a summary of a folktale about how the camel got its hump. This book is the Spanish version of Camels, part of the “Amazing Animals” series; no translator is acknowledged. A list of additional resources is not provided in either the English or Spanish edition. No content consultant is noted in the credits. This title is part of the “Planeta Animal” series, which covers a variety of animals. Teachers will find this translated text and the series to be a good addition for a science unit on animals. The folktale (pourquoi story) provides a start for cross-curricular work. Children who love animals will be drawn to the photographs and information about the camel.
