Former Tottenham Hotspur forward Vincent Janssen has earned a surprise recall to the Netherlands squad for the first time in five years.

Janssen has not represented his country since October 2017 but head coach Louis van Gaal has named the striker in his 26-man squad for Nations League fixtures against Belgium, Wales and Poland.

The 27-year-old has scored seven goals in 17 games for his country but had been overlooked since his unsuccessful spell at Tottenham.

Janssen scored just one league goal in 23 games for Mexican side Monterrey this season, with a total of three in 29 matches across all competitions.

Tottenham forked out £17 million to sign Janssen from Dutch side AZ Alkmaar in July 2016 but the striker failed to live up to his price tag.

Janssen scored just six goals in 42 games during the three years he spent at Tottenham.

He was loaned out to Turkish side Fenerbahce for the 2017-18 campaign before joining Monterrey on a permanent deal in July 2019.

Janssen’s form in front of goal has improved in recent years as the Dutchman has netted 24 goals in 93 games since moving to Mexico.

The Netherlands will open their 2022-23 Nations League campaign against Belgium on June 3 before facing a double-header against Wales either side of a home match with Poland.
