ENGAGEMENT—Mr. & Mrs. Lee Hickson are proud to
announce the upcoming marriage of their granddaughter,
Ashley Renee to Thomas Bradley Jackson, son of Mr.
Leonard Jackson of New Summerfield, Tx. and Ms. Marsha
Jackson of Jacksonville, Tx. The couple will be united in
marriage May 12th, 2006, at 7 p.m. by Mr. Bruce Samford.
was the prom sponsored by the
junior class, Mrs. Tippett, Mrs.
Tomlisnson, Mrs. Conway, and
Mr. Jackson. The Saturday night
event started way back in the hot
days of August when these spon-
sors and juniors began raising
money for the annual prom to
honor the senior class. The Ho-
tel Fredonia had been trans-
formed into a starry night with
lots of star-covered gossamer,
shining stars, and beautiful table
decorations. The most gorgeous
and handsome decorations were
the stylishly-dressed scholars
who only added to the beauty of
laughed, they ate, they took hun-
dreds of pictures as they cel-
ebrated this milestone event in
their lives. At ten o’clock,
Charlsey Mackey and Rick
Oliver were crowned prom king
and queen. After they danced the
king and queen dance, Mrs.
Tippett began the senior video.
This senior movie was the hit of
the evening; there was a lot of
laughter, a lot of “OH, yes, I re-
member”, and maybe a few tears
as the year flashed before them.
Now, another prom is a pleas-
ant memory for them to reflect
on for many years. Congratula-
Joaquin’s Special Olympics Kids practice their skills
By Sonia Yearwood
Joaquin ISD has good reason
for pride in the school’s Special
Education programs. Devoted
teachers and aides assist special
students to develop lifestyle
skills as well as motor skills
while keeping instruction upbeat
and beneficial.
Alex, Crissy and Dakota are
three Special Education students
working with Karen Smith, spe-
cial education aide; Susan
McGuire, junior high Special
Education; Mary Beets, special
education aide; Heather Martin,
student aide; and McKenzie
Childress, student aide, as the
trio prepares for Special Olym-
pics competition. Tam
Heamsberger is the Joaquin ISD
Special Education Director, and
Susan McGuire remarked,
“She’s really wonderful.”
Presently the three students
are practicing for summer com-
petition in Softball Throw and
50 or 100 Meter Dash. During
the winter months they work on
their basketball skills.
Without the devoted attention
of the many teachers and aides,
these students could not progress
and experience some of the joys
of living offered to others. They
will be joined next year by stu-
dents moving up from elemen-
tary school Special Education
classes.
Entering the Lifeskills class-
room is like stepping into a cozy
and cheerful little one-room
house. Here, the students learn
to cook, clean and maintain
comfortable living conditions.
There are all of the usual appli-
ances, such as a washer, dryer,
stove, refrigerator, sink and
more. To teach numbers, stu-
dents often sit at a kitchen table
and play simple card games,
with “Go Fish.” being a favor-
ite to help them with counting
skills they’ll have forever. Stu-
dents make a complete Thanks-
giving dinner, including a turkey
stuffed with dressing. Of course
several procedures are modified
to accommodate the students’
varying abilities. For example,
green onions are cut with scis-
sors instead of with a knife.
Special Education Aide, Mary Beets compliments Alex for
her successful Special Olympics Wheelchair Race practice
run. She will compete in the 25 Meter competition.
Crissy practices her Softbal
Throw for upcoming Special
Olympics competition.

The mission of Special
Olympics is broad and reward-
ing to the athletes and their fami-
lies. Special Olympics was
started by Eunice Kennedy
Shriver in 1968. The Special
Olympics Texas program began
in 1969 with 350 athletes com-
peting at Baylor University.
There are now more than 22,000
Special Olympics athletes in
Texas, with some 20 different
categories of sports available.
The Special Olympics Texas
Summer Games will be May 25-
28, at the University of Texas,
Arlington.
Joaquin ISD can be proud of
their Special Education teams as
these “Special Children” are
given an opportunity to experi-
ence an enriched and more
meaningful life.
sors for a job well-done.
Three of Bill Taylor’s grand-
sons attended the prom:L B.C.,
Trey, and Chase Taylor—such
handsome young men like their
dads and grandfather!!
Before the prom Jerrie,
Terrie, Robin and I joned Leah
and her husband and Kelly and
Suzy Parker for dinner at Clear
Springs. Kelly and Suzy were
celebrating their anniversary;
congratulations to them.
Happy 18th birthday to
Marcus Nix; it is hard to believe
he is about to graduate from high
school
Marcus will go to Austin to
the University of Texas in the
fall. He is an excellent student,
and he will continue the tradi-
spaghetti made soon.
The class of 2006 is such a
unique group of scholars. So
many of them have posted aver-
ages over 95. They have been
competitive, determined, and
goal-oriented since they began
school. We will certainly miss
them next year.
Chris spent Saturday night
with Zachary in Zavalla and at-
tended church with him and
Aubrey on Sunday. WE missed
him at Stockman.
We were happy to have a
guest worship with us at Stock-
man on Sunday evening; Connie
Frank who has purchased the
Phelps home up the road joined
us Sunday. We hope she comes
often.
