The Better Thought f few oftla É¡fa
When youthful passion fired niy breast,
And drove me into devious ways,
Didst thou my wandering step arrest,
And whispering gently in my ear
Thine angel message fraught with lore.
Check for the time my mad career,
And melt the heart naught else could move!
Thine was no steru and harsh rebuke ;
No " friend's advice," so true, so cold:
. No message wise, such as in book,
Or by the teacher oft is told,
Which like the pointless arrow, falls,
And rings perhaps with hollow sound.
But ne'er the wanderer recalls,
But ne'er inflicts the healing wound.
The voice was gentle, winning, mild;
Thy words tola thou wert from above,
Like those with which the wayward child
Is wooed by a fond mother's love ;
Or like a strain of music, stealing
Across the calm and moonlight seas,
Which mores the heart of sternest feeling.
And wakes its deeper harmonies.
Sweet was thjr presence, welcome quest:
And I responsive to thy call,
' . >- . _ Arose, and felt within my breast
Vpower that made the letters fall
>" gfUff n*r long enthralled soul,
W1'h a magic spell,
' ^~ wed the soft control
But ah tEdé wert «iih&'l lie well.
How soon departed, soon K>¿5g,v>
Were all the hopes of coming rest,
That clustered round the Better Thought -
The tender griefs, the firm resolves,
The yearnings after better ilays.
Like transient sunlight which .^solves.
And leaves no traces of its ray !
Vet I despair not—through the night
That long had reigned with tyrant oway.
E'en now I see the opening night,
The harbinger of coming day;
To'heaven I now direct my prayer-
0 God of love, forsake me not
Grant that my waywardness may ne'er
Quench the returning Better Thought!

FASSMANN'S
IRON HOOPS AND TIKS,
FOR COTTON BALES.
PRICK tt CKNTD «R POCKD—25 PER WWT mvs
Rora!
ANY one considering the advantage of Iroif over
Rope as a material for binding Cotton Bales, will
be surprised that it has not been adopted long since.
|n its security against fire then* is an overwhelming
reason for its adoption.
The Presses in the seaport cities have been the main
cause of its not being generally adopted ; but now that
objection is removed generally, and the New Orleans
Press, the largest in N. O., gives it the preference over
rope.. TheFassmann Iron Hoop and Tie is the im-
provement of one of the proprietors, and is adopted
from the fact, that it is found after long experiment, to
combine the greatest merits in simplicity and facility of
application of any yet made. It is so prepared as to
require no change for recompressing. Thus obviating
the only remaing difficulty at the sea board cities.
The Hoops are sent of any length from eight to ten
feet, and a full guarantee given that neither the Ties
nor Hoops shall break. And further, that cotton bound
in them shall be received on the same terms, at the Or-
leans Press, as rope bound cotton. The weight per
bale is about the same as rope, not one pound more or
less.
To show tlie opinion Ship Masters have of it, we give
the following, among numerous comendations we have:
The undersigned masters of vessels having had cot-
ton oompressed with Fassman's new Iron Hoops and
Ties, hereby recommend the same. The bales being
well compressed and buttons or hoops, never breaking

State of Texas, under R, a, ,lu
granted him by the ü. S. Governnfent onS^aJ?t
of January, a. d., 1859, for Defecating iind
Cane Juice, for making Sugar, takes pleasure
Ing the use of this valuable invention to the sugar"',
planters of Texas at the moderate price of fifty cents
per hogshead, as a bonus, for the use of tlie same.
The additional apparatus for making sugar under the
new process, will cost one hundred dollars, at the factory
Under this process, the use of Bi Sulphate of Lime,
Bone Black, and all the other ingredients, commonly used
by sugar makers, are dispensed with, with the excep-
tion of Lime, for liming the Juice, which is indispens-
able and the use of Sulphuric Gas is adopted in lieu oi
all former methods of Defecating and Clarifying the
Juice. I will attend to the putting up of the appara-
tus, and show the planter how to. work the same. The-
cost of the ingredients for making sugar by this process
will not exceed 10 cts. per hogshead, 5 cts. will prob
ably be ncaier the actual cost. The sugar is vastly su-
perior in quality to sugar made by any other method,
and is worth from 2 to 3 cts. per lb. more than any
other sugar made from cane juice. The process can be
used in any mode of making sugar, either with the va-
cuum pan, or open kettles Samples of this sugar can
be seen at most of the commission houses in this place,
which ¿ampies are of a fair average quality of the sugar
made by the Patentee on his plantation in Louisiana.

^jijeen appointed Agent for the sale of Goats
t/1-í the Cashmere Sumner County Company of
sreanewee, I am ready to enter into contracts with those
penons who may wish to purchase the animals. They
will be furnished and delivered by the 1st of December
next in Texas. The first year one-three quarter blood,
second year one-seveneights, and the third year one-fif-
teen-sixteenths for one hundred dollars each, payable
on delivery.
Probably no animal offers greater inducements to
stock raisers than the Cashmere ^tock. A gentlemen
near Nashville, Tennessee, refused, lately, five thous-
and dollars for the product of forty common stock
goats crossed by the Cashmere, consisting of three-
eights, one-half and three-quarter blood, all produced
since December, 1856. Persons who may wish to pro-
cure these animals should address me at Austin, Travis
County Texas, without delay, so as to enable me to for-
vrard their orders in due time, as no Goats will be *ent
unless contracted for beforehand.

uses a straight needle* It is so arranged as
to be utterly impossible for it to miss stitches. It has
a tension on both sides, and carries a large supply of
thread on the under spool. The motions are gained by
two small cranks that mu without perceptable noise.
The two threads are worked in such a manner as never
to both pull at the same time, and consequently, little
liable to break. The seam is very elastic, and the thread
docs not break in washing. It will do coarse work bet-
ter than any cheap machine now in market, as it uses
silk, cotton, or linen with equal facility.

-I- from the store, requiring iio rewinding of thread;
they Hem, Fell, Gather, and Stitch in a superior style,
finishing each seam by their own operation, without re-
course to tlie hand-needle, as is required by other ma-
chines. They will do better and cheaper sewing than
a seamstress can, even if she works for one cent an

the market for family sewing, on account of their sim
