Alfirin and Mallos
“This species has long been a source of confusion to readers of The Lord of the Rings. It is sometimes considered to be the same plant as simbelmyne… The name alfirin is used for both species– for simbelmyne, which has more or less erect, starlike, white flowers, and also the plant considered here, which has nodding, long lasting, bell-shaped, golden-yellow flowers, and is mentioned in Legolas’ poem describing the “green fields of Lebennin” that he recited to Merry and Pippin in Minas Tirith.” Writer Walter S. Real Life Comparison: The Fritillaria genus, particularly yellow-flowered species. Mallos is thought to describe a similar species within the genus.
Location: Alpine and subalpine meadows, pastures, various grasslands, open woods, and scrub, rocky places.
Usage: Popular garden ornamental. Many are poisonous and few have medicinal value.
