Controversial artist Lars Vilks dies in a car accident

  • The artist Lars Vilks has died in a traffic accident, after the car he was travelling in came over on the other side of the road and collided head-on with a lorry. Two police bodyguards also died in the crash.

  • Vilks had lived under police protection since 2010, because of death threats after he had caricatured the prophet Mohammed as a "roundabout dog".

  • The police say there are no signs of foul play, or that the vehicle he was travelling in was in any way tampered with, but that they are investigating how the accident happened.
