Fero’s Gem & Seawolves’ Bats Power Stony Brook Past NJIT in Series Opener

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – In his final start of the season, Stony Brook senior Ben Fero tossed a gem as he went 8.1 innings and struck out a career-high 11 batters en route to a 5-3 win over NJIT on Thursday afternoon. Junior catcher Shane Paradine, sophomore infielder Matt Brown-Eiring, and junior outfielder Derek Yalon fueled Stony Brook's offense as they went a combined 6-11 with two home runs and five RBI.

NJIT struck first when Julio Marcano drove in the game's first run in the top of the third inning. Stony Brook responded in the bottom of the third with a pair of runs of its own. Yalon crushed his second home run of the season, a solo shot to even the game up at 1-1. Paradine gave the Seawolves a 2-1 lead with a two-out RBI double that chased home senior third baseman Evan Giordano.

The Highlanders knotted the game up at 2-2 when Jared Donelly brought home a run with a sacrifice fly. Stony Brook broke the tie in the bottom of the sixth inning when it rallied for three runs in the frame. Paradine notched his second RBI of the day with a single that brought home sophomore infielder/outfielder Evan Fox.

After Paradine's RBI single, Brown-Eiring launched a two-run home run to left field to give the Seawolves a 5-2 advantage. From there, Fero closed the door as he surrendered one final run in the top of the ninth inning as the Seawolves held on to win by the final score of 5-3.

Fero became the first Seawolves' pitcher to pitch into the ninth inning since Jared Milch went the distance on May 28, 2021, against Albany. The senior notched his fourth win of the season and recorded his first career double-digit strikeout performance.

QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"Anytime that you are in a three-game series, the first game is huge, it puts you in great position to win the series. We took care of business today, we did a great job, we are not going to get out ahead of ourselves and talk sweep, but for those reasons – we have put ourselves in a real good position to win another conference series and we are still in it in regards to winning a conference regular season championship," said head coach Matt Senk.
