Adaptability Helps You Progress Better

in #adaptability7 years ago

Hello, my fellow Steemians. Hope all of you are good. In this post, I’ll be talking about how important it is to be adaptable in today’s age to survive in this crazy world.

Being aware of everything all the time is certainly not an easy job. On my quest to awareness and deserving great things, I came across another lesson- be more adaptable to survive in this world instead of seeing everything in black and white.

But what does that mean? It simply means that you can’t label everything as either good or bad. There is nothing always right or wrong; instead, you need to adapt to different things, changes and situations to survive and make things favorable for yourself.

This concept wasa tad bit hard for me to understand and digest so I’ll elaborate it with an example.

Say you decide to lose weight and come across Atkins diet and feel that it’ll work well for you because it has done wonders for so many people. You start it and carry it for a few months only to find out that it didn’t help you get the desired results. What do you do then? If you continue with it knowing that it doesn’t suit you, you’re actually practicing the black and white theory. You still think that diet is the best way to lose weight and you keep sticking to it even when it doesn’t work for you. However, if you notice the different signs that it isn’t suitable for you and adapt to those signs accordingly; and change the diet and try more methods of losing weight then my friend, you are adaptable.

Adaptability Allows You to Survive

Being adaptable is one of the most important keys to survive in this world. ‘It is not the most intellectual of the species that survives; it is not the strongest that survives; but the species that survives is the one that is able best to adapt and adjust to the changing environment in which it finds itself.’

Attributed to Darwin quite often, this quote beautifully sums up what I’m trying to point out. The point is quite simple: if you want to survive in this world and live a well-balanced life, you have to constantly adapt to the different changes and situations you find yourself in.

I am an adaptable person, but there is one aspect of my life that I was quite rigid in- career. For about three years I worked as a content writer with a consultancy firm that almost made me go insane. Working with them did teach me some important lessons on writing well, but their working method was crazy. I was miserable as long as I worked with them and that negatively impacted my family and personal life too. I used to vent out my anger on my family especially my mother and husband, and deep down they despised me for that. Although I knew things weren’t going smooth mainly because of my work, I didn’t have the courage to quit it and look for clients on my own or a better job cos I was afraid that I won’t be able to survive without this job.

One fine day I realized that all of this needs to stop and I have to move on. Backed by my husband on this idea, I decided to be adaptable. I pursued the idea of looking for clients on my own and finally quit my job. Even before I did that, I found a great client. Being adaptable actually worked for me; I established a good working relationship with him and soon, I found many other clients.

However, after a year, I found myself being rigid too. Instead of using different approaches to find better paying clients and to look for ways to improve and increase my business, I stuck to one client-finding portal and blamed it each time my proposal to a writing gig was refused.

When I came across the lesson on adaptability, I realized precisely the issue with myself when it came to improving my business- I was rigid and wasn’t adapting to different changes.

Adaptability is Applicable in Every Area of Life

Later I realized, adaptability applied to various other instances in our life too- relationships, work, business, personal issues, weight loss and a myriad of other aspects. Of course, there are certain principles that are and should be viewed in black and white as they give a sense of direction to our lives. For instance, principles pertinent to my religion will always be viewed by me under the black and white light. Similarly, there will be different things for you that you perceive under the black and white light since they are your core values- the ones that define you and your life.

However, all the other things need not be so rigid. Being flexible, bendable and adaptable is the right way to approach things and situations so you can transform even the worst case scenarios in your favor. When my husband introduced Steemit to me and asked me to join it, I was again a bit rigid. Since I’m not good with advanced technology, apps, software, gadgets and have no idea about cryptocurrencies, I felt I won’t do well on this platform and won’t even understand it. Then I recalled the adaptability lesson I learnt from Tai and decided to give it a try. I am about 8 days old the forum and with my husband’s help, I’m understanding it better each day and enjoying too.

I’m still a bit rigid in certain areas in life that I need to be more flexible on but I’m a work-in-progress and am slowly making improvements in my life. If you too feel stuck in a certain area in your life and feel you aren’t progressing like you should, try to soften your black and white theories and become a little flexible. See how that works for you? If it does, try being more adaptable by learning more stuff and applying it to your life. I’m sure you’ll do great.
