Everything to know about Brendan Gleeson and his famous family

Having graced our screens for more than three decades, here’s everything you need to know about Brendan Gleeson and his famous family! 

Needing no introduction, the Dublin native Brendan Gleeson has earned his acting chops in dozens of iconic films and TV shows over the years including The Banshees of Inisherin, In Bruges and Mr. Mercedes.

Now 68, the Emmy winner started acting in his thirties, making his debut in 1990’s drama The Field.

Some past Irish pupils might also remember first encountering Gleeson during their school days, with the esteemed actor appearing in a short film as Gaelige: 2001’s Cáca Milis.

Following in their father’s footsteps, the Gleeson family clearly has acting in their blood with the sons of the Harry Potter star going on to carve out successful acting careers of their own.

Appearing on the red carpet together at this year’s Oscars, Brendan and his wife Mary have been married since 1982.

The two share four sons Domhnall, Brian, Fergus and Rory, but the celebrated actor has been quite private over the years about his relationship.

The eldest of the couple’s four sons, Domhnall Gleeson is no stranger to the silver screen having appeared in 2013’s romantic comedy About Time, 2014’s sci-fli flick Ex Machina and even played alongside his dad as Bill Weasley in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

The 40-year-old grew up in Malahide and studied Media Arts in the Dublin Institute of Technology and has taken on screenwriting roles alongside his established acting career.

Recently starring in 2022’s drama Bad Sisters, Domhnall’s brother Brian is also an actor in his own right making his breakout role as Hughie in 2010’s Love/ Hate.

The IFTA-nominated actor was born in 1987 and was a member of the Gaiety’s Youth Theatre Company while growing up in Malahide.

Like his brothers, Rory Gleeson is no stranger to the world of the arts and is a novelist, playwright and screenwriter, having released his debut novel Rockadoon Shore in 2017.

The 34-year-old graduated with a degree in Psychology from Trinity and went on to study in Oxford, The University of Manchester and the University of East Anglia.

The most spotlight-shy of the Gleeson brothers, Fergus was born in 1983 and is credited for creating the music in 2018’s Psychic which was directed and starred by his dad and two brothers Brian and Brendan.

Fergus joined his dad as a guest on RTEs The Late Late Show in 2020 where he played guitar during a performance of A Pint of Plain Is Your Only Man.
