- Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is the most common sustained heart arrhythmia, with its incidence and prevalence increasing in the United States and globally.
- This guideline includes atrial fibrillation (AF) stages as an evolution of atrial arrhythmia progression starting from “at risk for AF” to “Pre-AF”, to “AF” (with the 4 substages of AF) to “permanent AF” and within this are several associated considerations to guide healthcare professional care.
- This guideline issues new recommendations for atrial fibrillation and thromboembolic risk assessment, anticoagulation, occlusion of the left atrial appendage, AFib catheter ablation, prevention of and risk modification for this patient population.
