Considered the most conspicuous representative of structuralism, he carries out a work of comparative sociology based on the anthropological study of social organization and kinship, thought, the prohibition of incest, and myths, among other elements. His approach influences not only twentieth-century social science, but also the study of philosophy, comparative religion, or literature. Lévi-Strauss interprets cultures as communication systems and constructs models based on structural linguistics, information theory, and cybernetics in order to interpret them.
Deeply tied to Western civilization, he is equally tied to the principle of a strict "cultural relativism", by which no society can rely on its own values to judge other cultures and think that it is superior to them.
