Seedling
Cotyledons fairly large, 13-15 x 5-8 mm, elliptic, with rounded apex, gradually tapering to petiole, glabrous. First leaves rosette-shaped, simple, lanceolate, elliptic, petiolate, hairy with white hairs. The hypocotyled axis is short. Light green seedling.
Adult plant
Mantisalca salmantica is an erect annual or biennial species. The stem is very branched, spindly, ridged, stiff, up to 1.50 m height, glabrous or pubescent. The basal leaves are rosette-shaped, pennatifid or lyrate, petiolate, the upper leaves linear or lanceolate, toothed, with subulate tips, and sessile. Capitula with florets all tubular, purplish, sometimes white, ovate, very narrow at the apex, 12-19 x 7-15 mm. Involucral bracts green, shiny, mucronate, imbricate in several rows. Achenes 3.5-5 mm long, brown, longitudinally and transversely ribbed, with whitish, multi-seriate bristle pappus, slightly shorter than the body of the achene.
