Patti Smith is in good spirits following a recent hospitalization.

After the punk icon, 76, was discharged from a hospitalization in Bologna, Italy for a "sudden illness," posted to Instagram to update fans about her health. Along with a photo of her smiling alongside a team of doctors, she thanked the hospital for their treatment and shared that she’s "resting, as the doctor ordered," in the caption.

As the rocker’s hospitalization led to the cancellation of two concerts in Bologna and Venice scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday, she began her statement by apologizing for postponing the shows. "This is thanking all at the hospital for their help and guidance," the musician/poet wrote. "I am so sorry that we had to cancel concerts in Bologna and Venice. I will return to fulfill my happy obligations."

Smith continued by expressing her gratitude to all health care workers. "This is also to thank all the medical teams globally, who attend to the people’s needs, especially those altruistically serving under fire, all healers, physicians, nurses, attendants," she continued.

The "Because the Night" singer concluded, "Also I want to thank everyone for sending messages of love and concern. I am resting, as the doctor ordered, grateful to have had such care, though being painfully aware that many are not so fortunate."

Reports that Smith was being hospitalized in Italy broke on Tuesday when the Bologna theater Teatro Duse, where she was scheduled to play that night, announced on Instagram that her show "not be able to go on stage due to a sudden illness that struck the artist."

By Thursday morning, the legendary writer was confirmed to have recovered after receiving treatment in Bologna.

The hospital’s press officer Ilaria Maria Di Battista shared with PEOPLE that "after a period of rest," Smith should be able to perform again.

Battista also shared that the head of the emergency unit, Dr. Alessio Bertini, had told her that "Mrs. Smith was very polite and collaborative with us which made it easier for us to do our job to the best of our capabilities."

"She is such a person of reference for us and for so many generations. We even had the opportunity to speak about music and our favorite songs," Battista said of the doctor’s comments about interacting with Smith.

Another hospital source shared that before the Horses artist left, she "hugged and thanked the medical staff for their assistance."

Although the Just Kids author assured she will return to play her shows in Bologna and Venice, it remains unclear when they will be rescheduled for. The two concerts were the final performances during a string of shows across Italy, which first kicked off in late November.

Next, Smith is set to return to the U.S. for a series of end of the year shows. On Dec. 27, she’ll take the stage in Chicago, and she’ll return to her New York City home for two dates in Brooklyn on Dec. 29 and 30.
