When I picture God it isn’t a particular form. Nothing specific comes to mind. Not something that I can mold or shape myself. If He was made of something that I can mold, then how did He make me?

How can anyone be stupid enough to trust something that can be burned to ashes? No one can save themselves like that. Don’t they realize that the idols they hold in their hands are not really gods? Isaiah 44:20 CEV

What Does God Look Like?

I am not sure what you imagine when you think of God or Jesus, but I usually think of vast and elaborate things. I think of the sun, the snowy mountains, the ocean full of powerful and beautiful creatures.

We are all made in His image; so, I imagine things that He has made to be a likeness of Himself.

So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. Genesis 1:27 NIV

Attributes of God: Getting to Know Him

Seems like when we are making friends, a lot of the ways we get to know each other is through things they like or dislike. We discover what people prefer and learn more about their habits.

With God, it is much deeper than His earthly likes and dislikes. So here are my 15 Attributes of God!

1. Provider

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, nor turning shadow. James 1:17 WEB

Our God cares about and provides for all of our needs. I am grateful for a God that wants to hear my prayers and wants to provide for me!

2. Creator

Not only did God create everything, He is also a magnificent planner! The degree to which He has planned out every creature, every second and the entire universe blows my mind.

For instance, every promise He has in the Bible, He has already made sure everything is set up to unfold accordingly. So, some people call it coincidences; I call it: God.

Jeremiah 29:11 Attributes of God

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,” says Yahweh, “thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11 WEB

3. The Way

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. John 14:6 WEB

God even rendered a way for us to be with Him. He sent His Son, Jesus, to die for our sins, so we can repent and be forgiven to, ultimately, live with Him.

He also shows us the Way by sending His Holy Spirit to direct us with His laws guiding our hearts and decisions.

4. Attributes of God: Protector

I used to have a hard time reading the Old Testament. It was a lot of killing and it seemed really ruthless and unjust. After reading through a lot of the Old Testament in Bible study, I began to realize that the people God instructed David and other kings to kill were very evil people.

To you, my strength, I will sing praises. For God is my high tower, the God of my mercy. Psalm 59:17 WEB

David wrote this in the psalms. God took care of David and protected him from his enemies who worshiped pagan gods. Jealous King Saul was after David for most of his early life and yet God always made sure that David was able to flee before Saul could get to David.

For me, I think of all of the times, in my life, God has kept me just one step away from harm. Many times, I am sure.

5. Loving

Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. John 15:13 WEB

You can read how and why I fell in love with God here!

6. The Truth

God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should repent. Has he said, and he won’t do it? Or has he spoken, and he won’t make it good? Numbers 23:19 WEB

It is so reassuring to me that His Word never changes or waivers. It is something we can always count on. That is really refreshing. So, Jesus is the same today as He was years ago!

Our culture shifts what is true and false all of the time. It changes what is politically correct, what is offensive, constantly. God is who He says He is.

7. Attributes of God: Patient

God is extremely patient. When I think about all of the times I have stepped off His path for my life and went my own way, He has always been patiently waiting for me to figure it out and return to Him. He loves us so much!

Yahweh is gracious, merciful, slow to anger, and of great loving kindness. Psalm 145:8 WEB

8. Courageous

Jesus stood up to extreme ridicule. He was courageous. So, how does God share His courage with us?

Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them; for Yahweh your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6 WEB

God gives us courage too, when we call upon His name. If you are struggling with a trial or hard time in your life, you can read more about finding God in your trial here.

9. Funny

There are times, I look up to the sky and smile or laugh. I think God has a funny sense of humor. When I want something in particular to happen and something completely different happens… later, sometimes way later, I realize His plan was much better than mine and it amazes me how He works!

This verse makes me think of myself and it’s funny! 🙂

It is better to dwell in a desert land, than with a contentious and fretful woman. Proverbs 21:19 WEB

Of all the attributes of God, I am super happy that He has a sense of humor!

10. Healer

Lord, men live by these things; and my spirit finds life in all of them: you restore me, and cause me to live. Behold, for peace I had great anguish, but you have in love for my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption; for you have cast all my sins behind your back. Isaiah 38:16-17 WEB

You can read more verses on how God heals our hearts and physical bodies here.

11. Powerful

Well, first of all, He made us and the universe… so there’s that.

But also, everything listens to the sound of His voice. He has power over death and all evil. Think about how He intervenes in our lives all the time and keeps us safe from people who want to harm us. Just as He did for Daniel when he was thrown into the den of lions.

God is powerful - attributes of God

“But God made the earth by his power, and he preserves it by his wisdom. With his own understanding, he stretched out the heavens. When he speaks in the thunder, the heavens roar with rain. He causes the God has made the earth by his power. He has established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding has he stretched out the heavens. When he utters his voice, the waters in the heavens roar, and he causes the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth. He makes lightnings for the rain, and brings the wind out of his treasuries. Jeremiah 10:12-13 WEB

12. Consistent

The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our God stands forever.” Isaiah 40:8 WEB

I love consistency! I don’t know about you but schedules, rules and a plan are my jam. So, it makes me happy that God is the same way. He gave us His Word, so we could have a plan, rules and also a schedule of what is to come.

13. Loyal

Jesus, not only died for our sins on the cross, but He also goes to God on our behalf. He doesn’t leave our side. He is loyal.

Yahweh himself is who goes before you. He will be with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be discouraged.” Deuteronomy 31:8 WEB

Since, we can have a personal relationship with Jesus, we will be known to the Father. You can read more about how to have a relationship with Jesus here.

14. Caring

Our Do-It-Yourself culture teaches us we should do whatever makes us happy. Eventually that lifestyle leads to less reliance on our LORD for our every need. We feel empty and wonder if God is really there for us. So, this verse is a great reminder of that and why we often feel left alone.

I have told you these things, that in me you may have peace. In the world you have trouble; but cheer up! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 WEB

Of all the attributes of God, this is probably my favorite!

15. Fair

Therefore Yahweh will wait, that he may be gracious to you; and therefore he will be exalted, that he may have mercy on you, for Yahweh is a God of justice. Blessed are all those who wait for him. Isaiah 30:18 WEB

He is perfect and we are not. His standards are none less. Jesus is our only hope and Savior. <3

  1. I love you powerful list. The most help I’ve found in having a personal, intimate relationship with God and Jesus Christ is in learning about His Hebrew names. El Roi is the God who sees me. He knows my name, my down sitting and hears my cries for help. On and on. They are powerful!

  2. Thank you for posting this. I am currently on a quest to better understand the characteristics of God and came across this blog. It is always an encouragement to see(read) other believers walk out their faith. This journey isn’t easy, but thankfully we’re never alone.
