Alcayaga Earns NFCA/Rawlings Gold Glove

Sophomore catcher Ally Alcayaga named to inaugural Division II team

May 25, 2023

SEASIDE, Calif — Cal State Monterey Bay sophomore catcher Ally Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) became the inaugural NCAA Division II Rawlings Gold Glove Award winner as selected by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Thursday. Alcayaga was one of only two CCAA players so honored.

Recipients of the Rawlings Gold Glove Awards were selected by the NFCA's NCAA Division II All–America Committee, following regional voting to identify the finalists at each position. The group utilized fielding statistics and school-submitted video to closely examine finalists and select the winners at every defensive position.

Alcayaga, CSUMB's starter since stepping on the field as a freshman earned the honor after making just one error in 314 chances in 2023. She led the CCAA in fielding percentage at .997 (min. 100 TC) while finishing eighth in the league in total chances and putouts.

In addition to her glove work, she displayed a cannon arm, leading the CCAA by throwing out 12 would-be base stealers for a league-high 40 percent caught stealing rate.

"Ally is more than deserving of this award," says CSUMB Head Coach Andrea Kenney. "No baserunner serves a threat. Her arm rivals the best the CCAA conference has seen. I'm honored to call Ally an Otter."

Alcayaga led CSUMB to a postseason appearance for the second consecutive season in 2023. The Otters finished 28–25 overall and advanced to the quarterfinals of the CCAA Tournament.
