Background

Native to Central America, Monstera deliciosa is also known as split-leaf philodendron or swiss cheese plant. It is an evergreen perennial climbing vine that is most notable for its long aerial roots that resemble cords and its huge pierced leaves on thick plant stalks. It will impressively grow up to 70' into big trees in its native tropical habitat, covering the trunks with leaves that are between one and three feet long. Indoor plants are normally grown between 6 and 8 feet tall. The plant's mature leaves are enormous, glossy, deep green, and noticeably sliced and perforated. Young leaves are typically uncut and tiny.
Although the name of the genus is not entirely certain, it is believed to have originated from the name Dracontium that Linnaeus gave to this collection of plants. The term Monstera first appears in a publication that was published in 1763 as a revision of Linnaeus, but no information is provided as to why that name was selected. The specific identifier for the delicious edible fruit, represents tasty pineapple and banana.
