Fans of Sungchan and Shotaro have been waiting for two and a half years for the two to debut in a new NCT unit. Now there is finally a light at the end of the tunnel, but it's not quite as expected: SM Entertainment surprisingly announced today that Sungchan and Shotaro will be leaving NCT!
The two singers were already introduced as new members of NCT in October 2020. They participated in the second group album NCT 2020 Resonance, which was released in two parts. They also participated in an NCT concert titled "NCT: Resonance "Global Wave" in December.
In 2021, Sungchan and Shotaro again worked together with the other NCT members: Namely, the third group album "Universe"was released in December. They were even featured on the 2022 SM Winter album "SMCU Palace"!
Last year there was not much to see from them and fans understandably became more and more impatient. Finally, in February this year, SM Entertainment announced that NCT's never-ending expansion would end this year, with only one final unit to be added: NCT Tokyo. Other units already planned, such as NCT Hollywood, were canceled.
NCT Tokyo is scheduled to debut in the second half of the year and fans believed until today that Sungchan and Shotaro would be part of it. So they finally had a rough date to look forward to!
Today, SM Entertainment announced new plans in a statement:
NCT Tokyo will debut, but without Sungchan and Shotaro. The two are ending their careers with NCT before it has really begun. But that doesn't mean we have to wait again!
The two are scheduled to debut this year as planned, but they will be part of a whole new boy group!
SM Entertainment apologized in the statement to fans who have been eagerly waiting for Sungchan and Shotaro's debut in NCT and asks that they support them on their new journey. Fans are mostly happy that despite all the back and forth, they will see the two of them on stage very soon!
According to rumors, two SM rookies - Eunseok and Seunghan - are also expected to be part of the new boy group. Previously, it was speculated that they will debut in NCT Tokyo. The change might be related to SM Entertainment's desire to increase the number of Japanese members in NCT Tokyo.
