Zalando introduces a groundbreaking size recommendation tool based on customers' body measurements, aiming to enhance the shopping experience, reduce returns, and contribute to reducing textile waste in the long run.

Zalando, Europe's leading online fashion and lifestyle platform, has taken a groundbreaking step in the industry by introducing a new tool that provides customers with tailored size recommendations based on their unique body measurements. This innovative feature, the first of its kind at Zalando's scale, aims to address the long-standing challenge of finding the perfect fit when shopping for fashion items.

Utilizing state-of-the-art technology, Zalando's size recommendation tool requires customers in the DACH region to simply take two pictures of themselves wearing form-fitting clothing using their smartphones. By analyzing these images, Zalando can accurately predict the customer's body measurements, empowering them to make informed decisions about their fashion purchases. This breakthrough has the potential to not only enhance the overall shopping experience but also significantly reduce size-related returns and contribute to the reduction of textile waste in the long run.

The initial rollout of this feature focuses on women's tops, including dresses, as this category has traditionally posed significant challenges for customers when it comes to finding the right size. Zalando plans to expand the tool to cover additional categories and markets in the future, ensuring a broader range of customers can benefit from the personalized size recommendations.

Zalando also showcases a remarkable collection of brands that prioritize sustainability and ethical practices. It curates a diverse range of products made from premium materials, including GOTS-certified organic cotton and textiles approved by OEKO TEX Standard 100. Moreover, it collaborates with brands that uphold the highest standards, such as the Organic Content Standard and Responsible Down Standard, ensuring that its customers can make conscious choices while embracing fashion and style.

Empowering Customers with Personalized Size Advice

Stacia Carr, Zalando's VP of Size & Fit, highlights the significance of assisting customers in finding the perfect fit and how it contributes to building stronger customer relationships. The introduction of size advice based on body measurements represents Zalando's commitment to leveraging innovation to tackle a major challenge in the fashion industry. This feature not only benefits customers but also offers valuable insights to brand partners regarding their customers' size and fit preferences.

Zalando remains committed to prioritizing customer privacy and trust. When predicting body measurements, no photos are stored or leave the customers' phones, ensuring full control over data-sharing preferences.

Revolutionizing the Online Shopping Experience

The introduction of "Size recommendations with your measurements" marks a noteworthy achievement in Zalando's ongoing quest to assist customers in discovering their ideal size right from the start. This milestone also paves the way for a more personalized virtual fitting room experience. Looking ahead, Zalando envisions integrating technologies that enable customers to create a 3D avatar, faithfully reflecting their body shape and incorporating their individual measurements.

Thanks to Zalando's in-house team dedicated to size and fit, the company has already achieved a remarkable 10% reduction in size-related returns compared to items without size advice. This achievement is a result of combining Zalando's cutting-edge technology with the expertise of Fision, a Swiss mobile body measurement app developer acquired by Zalando in 2020.

With this pioneering size recommendation tool, Zalando continues to revolutionize the online shopping experience, empowering customers to make confident and well-informed fashion choices while minimizing the environmental impact of returns.
