Former president backs five New Jersey Democrats in House bids

Former President Barack Obama has endorsed Amy Kennedy for Congress in New Jersey’s 2nd district against a onetime supporter-turned-Donald Trump ally, Rep. Jeff Van Drew (D-Dennis).

Obama also wants Reps. Andy Kim (D-Moorestown), Josh Gottheimer (D-Wyckoff), Tom Malinowski (D-Ringoes) and Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair) back for another term in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The former president released a first wave of 2020 congressional endorsements today.

“I’m proud to endorse this diverse and hopeful collection of thoughtful, empathetic, and highly qualified Democrats,” said Obama. “Together, these candidates will help us redeem our country’s promise by sticking up for working class people, restoring fairness and opportunity to our system, and fighting for the good of all Americans — not just those at the top.

Kennedy is the wife of former Rep. Patrick J. Kennedy (D-Rhode Island), who was an early supporter of Obama in his 2008 bid for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Kim and Malinowski both worked for Obama.

Kim served in the Obama White House as the Director for Iraq on the National Security Council, and Malinowski was an Assistant U.S. Secretary of State.

“They make me optimistic not just about our party’s chances in November, but about our country’s future long after that. So if you’re in one of their districts or states, make sure you vote for them this fall,” Obama said.  “And if you can, vote early — by mail or in person.”
