The Newcastle Jets have lost 3-1 to Adelaide United in the South Australian capital on Friday night.
The home side had the first real chance in the first ten minutes when Johnny Yull fired over the crossbar from close range.
The Jets then had an even better chance two minutes later when Reno Piscopo was played through one-on-one only to have his shot saved by Socceroos goalkeeper Joe Gauci.
Adelaide United had the ball in the back of the net in the 14th minute when Hiroshi Ibusuki found the back of the net from close range and after a brief VAR check the goal was given to put the hosts 1-0 up.
Adelaide had a chance to double their lead before the break when Ryan Kitto fired a volley over the crossbar after a fantastic solo run from Luka Jovanovic.
The second half started brightly for the Jets as they commanded huge pressure while creating a number of chances within the first ten minutes of the second half.
Apostolos Stamatelopoulos came close to finding the equaliser when a well worked move down the right almost resulted in the striker finding the back of the net only to be denied by a last ditch interception from United defender Giuseppe Bovalina.
The Jets suffered a blow on the 66th minute mark when Phil Cancar brought down Luka Jovanovic inside the box.
Zac Clough stepped up to convert for Adelaide and make it 2-0.
Adelaide struck again only moments later when Nestory Irankunda played a ball over the top of the Jets defence for Ben Halloran to make it 3-0.
The Jets finished the match on a positive note when young striker Justin Vidic scored his first A-League goal in the 88th minute to make it 3-1.
Rob Stanton’s side continued to push for another goal but the hosts held firm to seal a 3-1 win.
The Jets find themselves back at home on December 30 when they host Western United at McDonald Jones Stadium.
