by Agustina from Buenos Aires

Jose de San Martin holding the flag of Argentina.
Jose de San Martin holding the flag of Argentina.

San Martin was born on the 25th February 1778, in Yapeyú, Corrientes in Argentina. San Martin left his country at the age of seven and studied in Spain. He participated in the North African campaign. On the 3th February, 1813 he created the "Horse Grenadiers Regiment" and he participated in the battle of San Lorenzo. He declared Peru's independence and he was appointed protector of Peru. He died on the 17th August 1850 in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France.

I think San Martin is a hero because he fought for the independence in South America with honesty and value without economic ambitions. He was brave, courageous, humble, simple and solidary. San Martin is the national hero of Argentina and other countries in South America, and this is how we should remember him.

I chose San Martin as my hero because he is a role model for the people, because he had many values and he fought for a very important mission.
