1996 WIP:
NiGHTS Into Dreams... & Christmas Nights (SAT, 1996) - Flight-Based Racing/Acrobatics/Platformer Hybrid, 2-Player Vs. mode,
-Innovative gameplay (part air racing with collecting and fighting enemies - when time runs out you're transformed back into the girl or boy and have to collect the scattered blue/gold spheres then destroy a pod and return a special sphere to Night's pod (3D platformer part), spinning as Nights creates a force field which sucks up collectables, boss fights/puzzles)
-Unique atmosphere and premise
-Memorable locations (mystic forest)
-Wide screen
-Two "campaigns" - one for the girl and one for the boy (mirrored level layouts)
-One of the first console games with analogue controls
-Instant replay after beating a world
-Ranking system (A-F per course) which sort of works as a metaphor for the kids' confidence
-Go through multiple ring sections quickly to get combo points
-Do 'stunts' in power loop mode (yellow trace) for extra points (pretty shallow but still)
-Hidden routes and items
-The nightopians (NPCs which can breed and be made happy (move carefully near them) or be killed making the others angry) - depending on their mood and how many there are the music of a level will change (four moods per level)
-Nice twist at the end
-Play as Nights the genderless jester/aero acrobat
-Player select screen defaults on the girl
-You can collect spheres as the girl or boy before freeing Nights to give you a head start (not that fun to do though)
-Pretty fast paced
-The game doesn't explain too much about Nights and his/her world
Christmas Nights:
-Date-based content: Includes an alternate version of the first level which also has a winter version appearing only during winter time (the game keeps track of the internal clock on the console so if played during winter time dates this happens), along with an alternate title screen theme and a Santa Claus cameo during december 24th-25th. There's also a "happy new year" message from Jan 1st to Jan 15th, and a few more things
-There are also some new songs
-Can unlock a melody box feature (a sound test that lets you customize a song by setting the mood of 5-7 nightopians representing either a harmony or instrument in the song and then play any level with that song accompanying it - you can mix one level's song with another level)
Dragon Force (SAT, 1996) - RTS/TBS Hybrid (time limited RT turns and RT battles with pausing)
-Up to 200 troops in a battle without slowdown, Up to 5 generals and 500 troops per army/party
-Non-linear structure (the world map is open to you at once though some locations are much better defended than others)
-8 different playable factions (2 of them need to be unlocked by finishing the game) with their own perspective on the story
-Early hero focused RTS
-14 general classes
-Terrain effects
-Leveling up your generals and castles increases their recruits capacity and defense bonus (use fortify and/or have the right generals in them (70+ intelligence))
-Strategize between battles (domestic affairs phase - award generals (gain award points by winning battles; increases their capacity for commanding one unit type with each one and makes them more loyal, can be given to any general regardless of who actually earned it), talk to your generals and captives (can recruit some enemy generals), search locations (items, recruitable generals), view other countries, equip generals with items; recruit troops in castles)
-Some funny/nerdy battle dialogue ("curse this infernal eye patch!", "alas, I have so very much to learn about strategy...")
-Good animation, character portraits during dialogue (not animated though), nice spell/special attack effects, Nice intro and ending cutscenes, pretty nice artwork stills during other cutscenes
-Can repair castle ruins
-Good interface in some ways (can release soldiers back into a castle's recruitment pool to let other generals recruit them, can convert one unit type to another at castles, shortcuts for command and special attack menus in battle, overview menu of armies/parties and generals on the map screen - can't sort the list of generals though?, can quickly move the battle camera between your and the enemy's general or to your troops)
-Can gain more than one level per battle (rare though)
-Speed up text on a per paragraph/text box basis
-Public support mechanic (potentially more award points)
-Formations (most of them aren't that useful though) - formations are the only way to split your one big squad of soldiers into smaller ones
-Pretty good visual variety
-Some optional and hidden generals
-Diplomacy (very crude and with a high risk of losing the army/party leader's troops - each character seems to draw from a limited stock of generic responses that don't always fit each other properly)
-Multiple save slots per game (time info) - can only save during the domestic phase though
-Perma-death (a char generally won't die from losing a duel though and can be healed with an item later if badly hurt)
-Some darker themes (Zanon's suicide, Goldark's older brother)
-Generals don't need to be in the main castle to be talked to or awarded during the domestic phase
-Some generals will either object to you sending them into battle or demand to go first and some can leave if you don't use them or reward them enough
-A castle's level can decrease simply from defending even if you did great (to avoid turtling I guess)
-You need to use specific routes when traveling between locations (adds a bit more tactical depth and challenge)
-Some magic/special attacks need to be timed to do good damage while others don't
-Time limit on battles (battles end in a draw if neither general is killed)
-Enemy general levels will be three levels lower than your highest leveled general besides the ones that gain levels from battles
-No character class or specials customization (can have them use new unit types using items though)
Tomb Raider (SAT/PS1/PC, 1996) - 3D Maze Platformer/TPS Hybrid, PoP-style 3D Platformer
-Innovative controls (jump in four directions, context sensitive action button, auto-targeting in combat (Lara will turn her upper body to be able to fire while kiting an enemy), side stepping, flip (180 degree turn) move, walk toggle (run as default) - walking lets you not fall over ledges, look around by holding a button), grab onto ledges PoP style, pretty atmospheric for the time (good sound design with music changes from silence to foreboding ambient to hectic for encounters or certain events, makes you feel isolated and vulnerable), some cool encounters (bear, t. rex, doppelganger), skippable cutscenes, nice tutorial (voiced tour around Lara's house; except it doesn't show how to fight or pick up items), fairly varied death animations, save anywhere on PC?, some stats are displayed after beating a level, new gear sometimes shows on Lara's model,
Sakura Taisen (SAT, 1996/PC, 1999/DC, 2000) - SRPG/Dating?
Panzer Dragoon II Zwei (SAT, 1996) - Rail Shooter
-Mysterious atmosphere (experimental music with folk Asian elements, abstract enemies and NPCs)
-Level up system based on rank (hit rate, route selection, completion)
-Upgradeable lock-on
-Wide screen mode
-Decent story involving genetic engineering and human/animal bonding
-Alternate routes within the levels - Star Fox?, CV: Bloodlines
-Cinematic scenes incorporated well with gameplay
-Great bosses, fantastic end boss
-Save between levels
-Good variation
-Smart bombs (charged by killing enemies with the standard shot) - Defender, Star Fox
PowerSlave/Exhumed (SAT/PC/PS1, 1996) - FP Action Adventure (Platform Adventure/Metroidvania w/ a hub map)/FPS (Doom style engine), Includes the mini-game Death Tank (similar to Scorched Earth)
-One of the first FP view MVs (travel back and forth between levels/areas via a hub map, partially non-linear structure (you'll sometimes return to a previous area to unlock new parts of it with a new tool or ability, some sequence breaking possible - can jump higher using the grenades and later on the cobra staff (lets you skip part of the mine and go to the canyons of chaos to get one of the best weapons before going to the marsh for example (can skip most of the slave camp as well), some alternate paths, maze-like areas, permanent upgrades that let you reach new areas, in-game NPC dialogue scenes - non-interactive though) - these aren't there in the PC ver., upgradeable health bar - find the ankh symbols). Non-persistent locked doors and single entry points to areas however
-Jumping (and hover jumping with an upgrade) and swimming
-Slopes - Ultima Underworld, System Shock
-Exploding barrels and mini-map (Doom)
-Levitation/flight upgrade
-Pretty smooth framerate overall
-Technically impressive for the Saturn
-Somewhat larger and more complex areas than on PS1 overall
-Temporary rate of fire upgrade and invisibility (Doom?) power ups
-Mythological Egyptian setting
-Some interesting hazards (the bouncing rock spawners)
-Good bosses overall
-One alternate ending (collect the transmitter pieces for the good ending)
-Resource management (not that much ammo and health)
-Compass feature (replaces being able to check cardinal directions on the map though)
-Random element to what item you'll get from item containers
-Sound queue used for finding the transmitters hidden in some levels (in some cases you have to come back with a later upgrade)
-Escape sequence without a time limit before the end (would've been more effective with a limit and with a cutscene or voices showing you communicating with the rescue team) - Similar to Metroid
-You're forced to remove your upgrades before the final boss (good as a build-up towards the finale but bad in that you don't get to test your skills in using them against the final boss - perhaps it could've stripped you of them one by one during the fight)
Saturn Bomberman (SAT, 1996) - TD Maze Action, 8-Player Vs. Mode, 2-Player Co-op?;
Shining the Holy Ark (SAT, 1996) - FP RPG/Dungeon Crawler RPG
Dark Savior (SAT, 1996) - Isometric Action Adventure/Fighting
Guardian Heroes (SAT, 1996) - 2.5D Beat 'em up/ARPG Hybrid, Up to 6-player co-op or vs (heavy slowdown though)
-Multiple paths between segments (choose what to do next during dialogue like in Contra HC - 2-3 choices between each level, 30+ segments in total)
-5 different playable characters (Serena is unlockable, can also unlock 4 other chars but you have to be playing on Hard mode)
-CPU ally (an invincible undead warrior) which you can order around (defend, attack/aggressive, stay back, do nothing, breakout/super attack move)
-Level up system in a BEU (manually allocate stat points in-between game levels - strength, vitality, intelligence, mental (MP), agility, luck - affects attack and defense) - Similar to River City Ransom
-Air combos (toss enemies upwards and hit them in mid-air) - MK1
-Multiple endings (5 different final levels plus light and dark versions of endings 3 and 5)
-Block move (can also do a backwards hop move while blocking) - Tower of Druaga, Zelda 1, Nazo no Murasame Jou. Blocking protects from attacks from both directions here - goes for enemies as well
-Weak and strong attacks - SF2
-Air dive move - Shinobi 3
-Pretty good intro (animé style), Animated character portraits during dialogue - Fray MSX
-Can choose to respawn on the spot or right before the current segment (which lets you re-allocate stat points) after dying
-Three different planes instead of free movement like in most beat 'em ups (see Fatal Fury) - switching between these isn't that useful though

-Branching paths between levels (Darius-style with different final levels and bosses)
-Quick briefing screens before each level (shows a pic of the boss and its name)
-Water splash effect when flying near water and skidding effect when touching tunnel walls or roofs
-Multiple endings (some of them are funny in an over the top serious way and there's some engrish in several of them)
-Moving wall hazards (later used in Panorama Cotton and Star Fox)
-Slopes and tunnels (Out Run)
-Health bar/shield in a shooter (5 HP)
-Respawn on the spot
-Transform into a mech for some of the final levels (cool but makes it harder to see hazards and makes you a large target) - in another your car is destroyed and you fly around like in Space Harrier instead which plays better and in yet another your car is upgraded into a ship with a stronger weapon (stage T)
-Vaguely cyberpunk aesthetic (the music is more jazz fusion/synth prog rock with some 90s dance elements though - more so on SAT)
SAT (Night Striker S):
-Adds an Extra Game mode (6 remixed levels and higher challenge)
-Auto-center (like Space Harrier) on/off toggle
-Optional auto-fire

Bubble Symphony (ARC, 1994/SAT, 1997) - Single Screen Action Platformer, 2-Player Co-op, Minor mini-game (a bunch of cards appear for a limited time and you compete with your teammate to grab the most - point reward)
-Same easy to learn but hard to master and addictive gameplay (see the prequel for mechanics and power ups)
-Secrets (avoid dying until a certain level in a world to be able to make doors to treasure rooms appear (can find up to 5 of them in a run? - these rooms also hold part of a clue to the best ending), find four big keys to unlock the final world (crystal ball items (not sure how to get them) reveal hidden keys for several levels onwards) - pick up three notes of the same color as the key shown in-between levels in a world to make one appear, hidden note items - get three of one color to get an item (big diamond=points))
-Adds 2 more chars (female dragons) - each of the four dragons has four different base stats (walking speed and the three bubble attack stats) and you can switch after using a continue
-New power ups (green scroll - Bob from Don Doko Don comes out to smash enemies with his mallet, grayish white scroll - the Space invaders base ship (shoots through walls), purple scroll - Ptolemy from Fairyland Story will help you (you can control her), falling rainbow attack (rainbow islands) - collect the rainbow potion and then jump into your bubbles, whirlwind bubble - goes in the opposite direction to what your dragon is facing and follows the air currents of the level, pink scroll - Tiki from New Zealand Story/Kiwi Kraze hops out of the ether and slings arrows, Blue scroll - summons Hipopo from Mizubaku Adventure/Liquid Kids (he can jump+shoot and his mizubakus (water bombs) cause a torrent of water like the one that comes out of a water bubble), white flag - summons Pocky who throws her cards at enemies, Heart - summons a large pink dragon who causes lightning damage and stomps enemies, Red Shield - summons the Silver Hawk from Darius 2 (it drops bombs when jump is pressed and fires its laser when bubble is pressed), Cane - summons Mr. Mikata from Pulirula (twirls around dancing and anything he kills becomes strawberries), three rings which increase points gained, bomb=smart bomb, silver rod and candy cane - turn bubbles into point items/fruit, Necklace - an -Arkanoid ball will bounce around and turn any enemy it hits into a blue diamond)
-Can control your fall speed here (can basically hover jump if you hold up)
-8 different endings (5 bad ones which are somewhat different in human form, one decent one and one good ending - have to collect the letters R O D by waiting until the "hurry up!" warning on certain levels to collect a rod item and turn into humans for this one, then there's the best ending which also requires switching to Super Game mode)
-Pretty good length (40+ levels per path, 140+ levels in total)
-Large and detailed boss sprites
-Decent platforming puzzles in the final world
-No major warps here? (spelling EXTEND gives you a full life stock and takes you to the next level - happens about once per run)
-Non-linear structure (pick between 3 paths after the first level and then between 2 after each boss fight)
-Password save and continue with level select?
-Can start the game as humans or pick Super Game mode with codes (https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/arcade/583699-bubble-symphony/faqs/1212) - Super mode kicks the difficulty level of the monsters up a few notches (they go faster, many gain projectile attacks) and provides the only way to getting the "true" ending

Shinrei Jusatsushi Taromaru (SAT, 1997) - Action Platformer/Run 'n Gun, 2-player co-op
-Some creative set pieces (the teeter, the spinning room, the raft, fight inside a giant frog at one point (similar to NewZealand Story or Yoshi's Island), etc.)
-Blends 2D and 3D backgrounds pretty well
-Some 2.5D gameplay (second ship boss, spinning room boss)
-Alisia Dragoon-like attack (auto-targets nearby enemies here, can switch targets with Y but not to enemies outside of your limited "field of vision" - have to be facing them and be fairly close, can charge it while moving but not shoot normally while moving - using a charged attack on an enemy causes a chain reaction if there are others nearby)
-Can see enemies' crosshairs as well
-Sometimes intense action
-Very good variation
-Good bosses overall (many large and detailed sprites - some made up of multiple parts, some have a second phase) and there are lots of them
-Can take over enemies and have them fight for you until death (they're pretty inefficient though and you can only take over a few enemy types (the ninjas first seen in level 1, only one enemy at a time as well) - they're better used as smart bombs (Z) - Darius Gaiden?
-Slide move (can't cancel out of it though and you can still get hit plus there's a bit of delay before it triggers) - MM3
-Block move (can be used in mid-air but not while sliding or walking, blocks in all directions like a temporary magical shield and knocks enemies back a bit as well) - Tower of Druaga
-Mini-bosses - Dragon Buster
-Respawn on the spot (Contra) - even after using a continue
-Levels transition into each other without pause (no loading times) - Truxton?
-Can crouch while shooting

-Speeder level (sonic 2 bonus level style), co-op section with AI, rescue boy mission (too bad there aren’t more of these), good voice acting overall, fan mail from the people you've rescued, lots of hidden victims (you can replay levels any time), jet pack (double jump or boost), great lighting effects for the Saturn, 2 playable characters (no difference?), extremely cheesy story/dialogue/music

-3 planes (+ 2 hidden ones) to choose from
-You can customize each plane (set speed etc.)?
-Relatively advanced dynamic difficulty/rank system (which isn't explained or displayed by the game at all and is a bit unintuitive unfortunately) - the game keeps track of how many items are picked up, how powered up the player's ship is and even how many shots are fired, increasing the difficulty accordingly. The only way to decrease the rank is by losing a life (!). Limiting your upgrades and even suiciding is key to scoring higher and by extension surviving the game unless playing on easier modes
-Fairly deep scoring system (gain more by shooting invulnerable parts of enemies and bosses, pick up medal items in a chain for higher points - value resets if you miss one, some medals are hidden - found by bombing the scenery)
-Great bosses
-Lots of options (screen modes (3-5 are useless though), training to hard mode + edit mode, hit box options) - SAT only?
-You can watch someone 'super play' it to learn the more advanced mechanics (getting a higher score)
-Smart bombs (different for each ship, these nullify enemy bullets)
-Secret planes (easier to access in this version through the options)
-Can change gun drone formations (by the press of a button, the drones also attack through a separate button to your main gun),
-Decent variation, remixed soundtrack option on SAT (sounds great, you can even adjust sfx volume), mania mode in the SAT version (autofire, gun drone cycling options), the game hands out bomb ammo when you die (20 small ones = half a full bomb), variable rapid fire rates (used for scoring higher by controlling your rank), dying causes and explosion (the shrapnel does decent damage to larger enemies and nullifies bullets), hidden power ups/points

2001:
Saturn Bomberman (SAT, 1996) - TD Maze Action, 8-Player Vs. Mode, 2-Player Co-op?;

-Huge bosses
-Some destructible scenery
-Good enemy variety
-Ranking system (timed levels, killing several enemies at once is rewarded with bonus points and a shoutout)
-Can use a sword for melee combat - Lords of Thunder
-Multiple endings
-Decent variation (missions: escort, bomb deployment, find the key, maze, search and destroy)
