The Aljama Masjid was built at the eastern flank of the High Garden at Medina Azahara, in the western outskirts of Qartaba, al-Andalus. The Mosque on the site was consecrated in 941 and in 947 the government was transferred from Córdoba.

The Mosque of Medina Azahara bears close resemblance to the Great Mosque of Córdoba; it has been called its "little sister".
