About the Business
Established in 2021. Covacha distills over 25 years of experience across a family of three beloved restaurants --Cafe Frida, El Mitote, Ella Social-- into the Upper West Side's new neighborhood spot. Covacha is a tribute to the food of the western Mexican "Ranchos", particularly inspired in Jalisco, honoring the "Milpa" culture (a pre-colonial agricultural system configured around polycultures). Covacha brings authenticity to the table and attention to details all around, while at the same time represents the artisanal processes and high-quality ingredients, with a focus on independent, small batch producers and revised versions of word-of-mouth traditional recipes, as well as a carefully curated selection of boutique Mexican spirits and natural wines.

Came for dinner with a friend and had an awesome meal here! I tried:
+ Jamaicon cocktail
+ Chicken flautas
+ Ceviche of the day
+ Pork belly chicharron tacos
+ Yaka-tinga
+ Tres leches
Cocktail was solid. The food highlights were the flautas and yaka-tinga (jackfruit tacos). Pork belly tacos were also really good.
Service was friendly, too. One of the best new additions to the area in years!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Mar 24, 20241 check-in
Stopped by for an early dinner before a show at the Beacon. Everything was delicious and I'd definitely go back before a show.
Pros: quick service
delicious food - I had the chicken flautas, guacamole, and a margarita and my friend had the enchilada
We enjoyed everything and the waiters were attentive.
Guacamole is on the creamier side if that matters to you.
Definitely plan on going again.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 2796642493Mar 13, 2024
RATING: 5.5/10
Came here as they were regarded with a Michelin Bib which means great taste for a small hit on your wallet and while nothing was exorbitantly expensive, I can't say that the food was remarkable enough? Maybe an off day, or maybe I ordered the wrong things. They have a great variety of margarita-type cocktails which I actually really enjoyed.
PORK BELLY TACOS
- the pork belly was well-cooked, and the corn tortillas were definitely tasty and fresh, but it was just a lot of crunch and not the type of soft bite I was hoping out of a taco. But maybe that's my mistake and I should have known. Also there are no traditional taco options - beef or chicken? There is a shrimp taco. These pork belly tacos were $20 for 3 tacos. I stand by my favorite taco place in Greenpoint that does $5 for tacos that are WAY authentic and top tier flavor. The spicy salsa for the tacos wasn't spicy, either.
I think maybe I just shouldn't get tacos at sit-down restaurants.
If I come back here, I'll order something else as other people seem to really enjoy this place.

Covacha is amazing. I love to go here for an after work drink, especially during their happy hour which is amazing and the drinks will absolutely hit every single time plus the food is great and the service is always on point.

Probably a 4.5/5.
Guacamole (4/5) - Delicious but standard, nothing too special. The chips are crispy, a good salty - overall a wonderful base. The guacamole is so refreshing and creamy, and has a slight tanginess and onions providing a nice crunch and sharpness.
Crispy enoki tacos (5/5) - The best taco of the night with the most surprising flavors. The crispy enoki is light but savory, and the batter bursts with umami flavor. The pickled red onion elevates the taco to the next level, adding a sweet and tangy element to the dish. There was a tiny bit of sauce at the bottom of the taco and a slightly spicy and sour salsa, but it would have been nice to have a proper sauce on the taco to make it more juicy.
Pork belly tacos (5/5) - Another favorite of the night. The pork belly was so crispy with the perfect fattiness, so savory and succulent. The garnishes were refreshing to balance the pork belly. Again it would have been nice to have a proper sauce on the taco rather than just the conventional salsa.
Beef barbacoa taco (4.5/5) - The roasted beef shank is so rich and flavorful, it is cooked til tender and dripping with juices and sauce. The beans and garnishes were decent and building your own taco was pretty fun. The avocado added a creaminess, delightful!
Quesabirria (4/5) - This was good, the beef had decent flavor and the quesadilla shell was crunchy. The birria made the quesadilla more juicy, but the birria wasn't as particularly rich and flavorful as it should be.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Heather M.Manhattan, NY7477681Apr 28, 2024
This place is a no. Their food is beyond average, just well plated with bad service. We were rushed to order, eat our food and then were told immediately after our plates looked cleared that they have other reservations that need the table(btw we made reservations and were there for less than an hour). On top of that when ordering our food they were so quick to get us in and out that when we asked questions it's like they were in turbo speed and annoyed by us asking for anything. Our table requested sauces because a lot of our meals came bare no sour cream or green sauce, but by the time they set our plates down and it registered to us that we had no sauce our waiter was out also just a heads up they charged us $2 for sauce. And these sauces were minuscule. So yeah big no! Too many great restaurants on Columbus for anyone to settle for this.

Heard about this establishment thru a friend. We came to see for ourselves and we loved it. We tried different plates with our family and everyone loved their selections. The enchiladas are excellent. So is their fish, Zarandeado and the mole. It's a must!! The food and service is excellent. It's a very nice ambience.

This place is PHENOMENAL!!
The food is insanely delicious and full of bold flavors. If you're looking for authentic good food this is the place to try!! We fell in love with everything we ate and truly do not have one bad thing to say about Covacha.
Try the guacamole it's super fresh and flavorful and not to mention the decor is beautifulHelpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 5189328Feb 19, 2024
A little disappointment. I was looking for an authentic Mexican restaurant in the neighborhood. Covacha had interesting menu items but the texture and flavor did not live up to expectations. We ordered the short rib, fish taco, enchilada and a soup. Dishes were colorful and nicely presented. But we just didn't enjoy them. Everything felt a bit average, flat. Unfortunately, we won't be back for the food.

Was very excited to try this place out because it was on the Michelin Guide. Got a reservation beforehand but I feel like you could walk in here fine and still get a table. I will say after this experience I'm not sure if the Michelin Guide is the most trustworthy list to look at for food recommendations in the city, but I guess that is that.
- Guacamole Tradicional - Yes this guacamole is really good but is it good enough to pay $15. Maybe I'm a bit delusional with the +$2 add-on with guac, but I feel a little weird that this dip was worth so much. I will say that I really liked the lemon-y flavors associated with it as well as the round chips that went along with it.
- Pork Belly Mole Dulce - I think my favorite part of this dish was the crispy enoki mushrooms which literally tasted like chips, they were insane. Also, with the mole sauce, it was so heavenly - I spent majority of the time dipping the tortillas into the sauce. I also really liked the pickled red onion which cut through the heaviness of this dish but I do have to say that I wasn't the biggest fan of the pork belly because although crispy on the outside, it wasn't particularly tender. I did appreciate how filling it was though!
Overall, not a bad place for Mexican food especially for the more innovative of sorts but I also don't think the quality of the food necessarily justified the high prices.Helpful 2Thanks 1Love this 3Oh no 0
