Le Point du Jour arts centre in Cherbourg-Octeville is hosting an exhibition of the work of Ugo Mulas. Its title, “Photographie”, is short but to the point. The exhibition will run until 3 January 2016, after which it will go on show at the Fondation Henri Carter Bresson. To mark the occasion, a book is being published, inspired by art from the 1960-1970s and offering the photographer’s thoughts on his own practice.
In 1973, shortly after Mulas’s death, La fotografia was published in Italy. Through the different places he worked (from the New York workshops to the Venice Biennale) and the numerous artists he shot (Duchamp, Fontana, Pistoletto, Rauschenberg and even Warhol), he tells the story of the art of his time and his own practice. The book ends with the series of Verifications where Mulas illustrates the key photographic operations. This unique journey, that was both documentary and reflective, is retraced in the exhibition.
Ugo Mulas (1928-1973) was one of the greatest Italian photographers of the twentieth century. The Museo nazionale delle Arti del XXI secolo in Rome devoted a retrospective to him in 2008. In France,Verifications could be seen in the 2015 exhibition “Qu’est-ce que la photographie?” [What is photography?] at the Centre Pompidou.
The exhibition is co-produced with the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson (Paris) in liaison with the Ugo Mulas Archives (Milan).
