Having spent the last 10 years fighting injustice and cruelty, Alejandro de la Vega is now facing his greatest challenge: his loving wife Elena has thrown him out of the house! Elena has filed for divorce and found comfort in the arms of Count Armand, a dashing French aristocrat. But Alejandro knows something she doesn't: Armand is the evil mastermind behind a terrorist plot to destroy the United States. And so, with his marriage and the county's future at stake, it's up to Zorro to save two unions before it's too late.

Leave it to Kurtzman and Orci to write a Zorro movie about a conspiracy involving foreign agents, private security, doomsday weapons, secret cabals, a rigged election, and a false-flag bombing. It's nice to see Zeta-Jones get a more active role in the Zorro-ing, but for all that plot this is mostly bereft of incident in favor of endless scenes of, you guessed it, characters explaining the plot to each other. And much more so than the first movie the fights here, shot mostly medium-close, are a bit mechanical and rehearsed and lacking in ferocity, as well as being generally dependent on gags about guys getting hit in the balls. There's also a train setpiece at the end that contains some truly dreadful digital compositing...I miss rear-projection.
More superheroes need to tag their enemies.

Another universally despised sequel due to minor flaws. The Legend Of Zorro may not be as smooth as it's predecessor, but this Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones reunion is bombastic when it has to be. First, the splendid child actor who played Joaquin (Elena and Alejandro's son) is adorable. The practical effects looked all too real especially during that painful looking jousting scene while the last arc is an exciting climax from our masked crusader. The set design and costumes felt authentic for its time as well.
Yes there’s flaws - from the forced humor, sagging opening arc, awkward dialogue and a runtime longer than it should be - but this is minute compared to the entertainment factor The Legend Of Zorro served.

Worse than the first Zorro in every aspect. There’s too much father figure Banderas and not enough Zorro, Banderas and Zeta-Jones’ romance isn’t interesting anymore, the story is a lot less intriguing; it’s just a big, but expected, step down from Mask of Zorro.

The gap between 1998 and 2005 might as well be a gulf of decades; the Hollywood landscape had changed too much after the likes of Neo and Spider-Man. In short, the analog magic is gone. So, "Legend of Zorro" pivots to PG in an attempt to win the family crowd, which I'm not necessarily against, but why not then follow the "Mummy Returns" mode of taking the whole family on an adventure? Instead, this script is flawed from the jump: it contrives a convoluted scenario in order to drive a wedge between Banderas and Zeta-Jones, when their onscreen chemistry was one of the highlights of the previous entry.

I'm convinced that most people just hate fun. Or more accurately, they hate when other people have fun.
More over-the-top than the 1998 classic that established Antonio Banderas as the iconic swashbuckler, but consistently fun; it's like a Jackie Chan martial arts film brought to the Southwest, given the balance between acrobatic action and comedy. At this point, Zorro has basically become Batman - a rich guy living in his mansion who maintains a secret identity as a masked crime fighter clad entirely in black, he even goes all Dark Knight by competing with a rival for the affection of his old flame. While still plenty entertaining, The Legend of Zorro feels much closer to Wild Wild West, the mostly-forgotten…

Where is Zorro? We miss our hombre enmascarado. Oh, save us from evil again, brave Zorro! Unsheath your rapier!
This was actually a sequel to a 1998 film that worked fairly well thanks to the chemistry between the two leads. But even though this is a re-pairing of Antonio Banderas and Catherine Ziti-Jones, the pasion y sensualidad is all but gone this time out. Even an introduction of the Knights of Aragon falls flat, despite the rich amber tones featured so generously in the cinematography.
Now, 15 years later, might it be time once again to regurgitate this cinematic franchise featuring Don Alejandro de la Vega and his amante? Decir que no es así, por favor!

This movie has a reputation of being vastly inferior to the original. Pfffftttt! That it has more humor and Zorro now has a family life bothered people? That Zeta Jones is Miss Zorro now and there's a Zorrito? C'mon! This film is just as entertaining, funny and action packed as the original. In some instances the action is even better staged and more thrilling than the first one. The train action sequence alone is brilliant. The team behind the first came back and kicked ass. Haters need to be bullwhipped Zorro style. Z's on their asses.

Director Martin Campbell has a couple of really good films on his cv, with Casino Royale my undoubted favourite of his filmography, but boy has he got some crap on there too. I've hated or been apathetic to the majority of his films, and some of his decisions have been defenseless. He gave Chris O'Donnell a role in one of his films, a stoning offence in some countries, and although the less said about Green Lantern the better, I didn't think that was as bad as some made it out to be. Studios haven't been afraid to give him a big budget to play with either, and sometimes he's turned a profit, but I've found that he tends to squander…

I suppose that, yes, swords were crossed, a whip was cracked, and buckles were swashed, but this is just bland and uninspiring.
It's hard to believe this is by the same director as the first film, because it totally feels like a lesser filmmaker doing an impression of the far superior original.

It's like they saw the first movie, and for some reason thought it lacked ridiculousness and hence was born this film. Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones have a great chemistry together, but alone they can't salvage the whole film. And is it just me or does Rufus Sewell only plays bad guys?

While the action is still fun and Campbell does fine work behind the camera, "The Legend of Zorro" just never really came together for me. It's strange that with all the possible ways they could've taken this sequel, they choose one of the more boring routes with a very dull and forgettable story. Banderas is great once again and I really liked that Zeta-Jones had a lot more to do this time around, but this was sadly a really dull one to watch.
