The center opens a new solo exhibition of work by L.A.-based artist Patty Chang with a five-channel film of lactating women pumping their breast milk as they recite lists of fears drawn from Angelenos. Chang explores our debts to those who came before us. A conversation between Chang and Astrida Neimanis takes place on Oct. 22 at 3 p.m. via Zoom. One Night in Miami...

Writer and former LAist ctonributor Kemp Powers has written a film adaptation of his stage play about the night in 1964 when Cassius Clay, Jim Brown, Sam Cooke and Malcolm X hung out in a hotel room to celebrate Clay's heavyweight championship victory. Directed by Regina King, it stars Kingsley Ben-Adir, Eli Goree, Aldis Hodge and Leslie Odom Jr. The night is filled with stories, hopes and dreams all while they challenge each other about fame, money, activism and racism. The film has a drive-in screening at AFI Fest. It opens in select theaters on Dec. 25 and will be available on Amazon Prime on Jan. 15.

The Venice-based gallery celebrates its 45th anniversary with a group show of works by 45 artists. The exhibition, which includes artists David Hockney, Alison Saar, Carmen Argote, Nick Cave, Tacita Dean and Elliot Hundley, also marks the gallery's physical reopening. A number of virtual events take place during the show's run, but you must make an appointment to view the works in person.

28th Annual Tin Pan South Songwriters Festival
The Nashville Songwriters Association International's festival has served as a way for audiences to discover new songwriters and hear legendary writers perform. This year, the celebration moves online. Listen to the songwriters behind hits and tracks recorded by artists including 5 Seconds of Summer, Jason Mraz, Keith Urban, Lizzo, Usher, Blake Shelton, Little Big Town, Lady Antebellum, Old Dominion, Jordan Davis, Miranda Lambert and Big & Rich.

The Journey
The Broad Stage in Santa Monica presents the West Coast premiere of the latest show by illusionist, mentalist and performance artist Scott Silven. From the comfort of their homes, audience members join Silven on an immersive virtual experience set in Silven's Scottish homeland. Wiesenthal
The Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts holds a digital presentation of the one-man show written and performed by Tom Dugan and directed for the stage by Jenny Sullivan. The production is based on the life of Holocaust survivor Simon Wiesenthal, who dedicated his later life to documenting the Holocaust and bringing more than 1,000 Nazi war criminals to justice. The digital production is a live performance recorded during the run of the show's New York premiere Off-Broadway at the Acorn Theatre in 2014.

Academy Dialogues: Broadening the Aperture of Excellence
The Academy continues its learning, listening and exploration series on issues of race and gender equity with a panel discussion on culture. Speakers include filmmakers Ava DuVernay (Selma), Julie Dash (Daughters of the Dust) and Euzhan Palcy (Sugar Cane Alley). The Berggruen Institute and Second Home Hollywood continue their series of live events with members of the spoken word-poetry group Get Lit. The California African American Museum welcomes a discussion on the South L.A. femme punk band, whose acronym stands for F**k U Pay Us. This dark, political drama may or may not take place in the near future, where three trans/gender non-conforming women seek a safe place to hide from the military. The inaugural production of the Center's new live theater series, Garage Theatre, it was conceived and directed by Jon Lawrence Rivera of Playwrights' Arena. Performances take place at 7:30 and 9 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday during the show's run.

Drive-In Dances: Solo at Dusk + The Betweens

L.A. Dance Project premieres two innovative drive-in, live dance series performed in the area surrounding its studios. These works were conceived and created entirely during the quarantine of 2020. Solo at Dusk is a work by Bobbi Jene Smith in collaboration with Or Schraiber and the dancers; and The Betweens is a work by Jermaine Spivey & Spenser Theberge in collaboration with the dancers.

Ghoulish Gardens Self-Guided Walks

Take a walk through the Arboretum's boo-tiful Ghoulish Gardens path. The at-your-own-pace adventure offers a look at creepier collections. Guests can learn about trees that strangle other plants, the ingredients in common witch potions, flowers that are pollinated by bats, and other fun and interesting tidbits. Adults and kids are encouraged to wear costumes. Protective face coverings are required, but Halloween masks are not allowed per CDC guidelines. The experience is included in admission.
