It’s difficult to believe that my first year as GPS Head of School has come and gone. We had a phenomenal school year with many accomplishments to celebrate, ranging from 10 seniors signing on to participate in college lacrosse, softball, cross country, cheerleading, swimming or soccer, to 10 members of the Class of 2015 being named National Merit Semifinalists, Commended, or Achievement Semifinalists. Our girls stood out as leaders with the self-confidence to achieve their goals. Those goals were as diverse as our girls. Freshman Margaret Lim won first place in the High School Division of the 19th UTC Annual Piano Arts Competition. Seventh grader Katie Eck won first place in the Tennessee DAR American History Essay Contest. Then we had senior Anjali Chandra, who was named one of the American Young Women of Distinction, setting herself apart as an individual outstanding in leadership, academics, and character. GPS girls worked well with others and were involved in their community, offering hundreds of hours of service to partners that included Chattanooga Area Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity, Northside Neighborhood House, Chambliss Children’s Home, and Eastside and East Lake Elementary Schools. In addition, many of our students volunteer for their churches, synagogues, or mosques. Beyond the many activities and achievements in which GPS students were involved this year, I was particularly impressed by the spirit and compassion that they demonstrated for each other and for their teachers. Betty Jo Horton’s math classes sent her off into retirement with love and a cake decorated with fondant pencils, equal signs, apples, and miniature algebra books. Crucial factors that determine the confidence and success of our girls encompass everything from how motivated, talented, and inspired their teachers are to the menu in the cafeteria on any given day of the week. From an administrator’s kindness in helping a girl solve a problem to a coach’s encouragement to persevere, every employee at GPS works hard each day to ensure that the girls have the best environment in which to thrive. Your generosity to GPS makes a huge impact on the tangibles and the intangibles on our campus. Whether you gave to the softball upgrades, an endowment for financial aid, or to the ever important Annual Fund — thank you. Our girls’ stories of achievement would not be possible without your support. The energy and excitement on campus is palpable, just like my first day of school last year. I invite you to come and experience it for yourself. Whether you are a parent, a grandparent, or an alumna, I encourage you to be engaged with our school. We hope to see you on campus soon. Gifts of Appreciated Securities There are numerous WAYS to support GPS while providing you with substantial tax, estate planning, and other financial benefits. It is your philanthropic support that can have the most significant impact on the success of this school’s programs. Donating gifts of appreciated securities that have been held for more than one year enables a donor to: avoid all capital gains tax on the appreciated portion of the stock; qualify for tax deduction equal to the stock’s full fair market value; make a larger gift than might be otherwise possible. Matching Gifts
Many corporations offer matching gift programs for their employees’ or their spouses’ gifts to their schools. Most programs match dollar for dollar, but there are some companies that match 2:1 and even 3:1. This is a great opportunity and allows you to be credited with the matching corporate gift. The Bruiser Gift Plan
Several donors already make contributions to GPS through monthly or quarterly credit or electronic bank draft payments. The Bruiser Plan provides a convenient and effortless method for spreading payment of your gift over a year or longer. Some donors, especially young alumnae and leadership donors, have seized the opportunity of the Bruiser Plan and have joined a gift club by paying their pledge throughout the fiscal year. A Planned Gift
There are many ways to name GPS in your estate which also benefit your personal financial situation. Benefits include making a gift that does not interrupt current cash flow or portfolio, reducing gift and estate taxes, and creating a gift from something other than capital to minimize tax deductions. The Cornerstone Society is comprised of donors who have named GPS in their estate plans through a planned giving vehicle. There are a number of possible avenues to take in making a planned gift to GPS: a Bequest (cash, securities, or real property); Charitable Lead or Charitable Remainder Trust; Gift Annuities; Real Estate, or a Life Insurance Policy. Have you heard the Expression, “Changing all four tires on a car while it’s going 75 miles an hour”? That’s a pretty good description of our year in the Development and Alumnae Office at GPS. Just like a race car that has to make pit stops to stay in the race, the GPS Development Office needed some upgrades in order to run smoothly on all cylinders. The tricky part was making these while also bringing in gifts for the Annual Fund and other crucial projects to ensure that GPS continues to provide an exceptional program for girls.
The system updates that we embarked on were long overdue and critical to modernizing the GPS Development Office operations. They included not only physical improvements to our database and systems, but also a transformation of the philanthropic culture and improved level of donor stewardship. The good news is that while these changes were under way, we were able to raise a total of $2.5 million for the Annual Fund and other special projects. In addition, we created a brand new signature event entitled Mad, Bad and Dangerous (MBD), which offered a gift to the Chattanooga community and to women and girls who have entrepreneurial aspirations. The database overhaul lasted three full months, with the final tweaks being done as I write this letter. You may find it enlightening to know that we are following the best practices of independent girls’ schools by coding the female in each family record as the head of household. In addition, our listing of donor names will now include the first names of both spouses – again in accordance with practices at our sister schools throughout the country. We looked at the staff structure and have also made a few changes that are designed to improve the donor experience as well as allow our staff to get to know our friends of GPS even better. We welcome two new team members: Rachel Coker ’07, our Database and Donor Records Specialist, and Marsha Sturm, Development and Alumnae Office Manager.

We knew this was going to be a special year, and we were right. Anticipation surrounding the new GPS leadership was seen in an outpouring of our GPS community’s talents, volunteerism, and pride. Following the installation of Head of School Dr. Autumn A. Graves, we began hearing from alumnae, past parents, and the many friends of the school. They wanted to be engaged with GPS during this new chapter for the girls, the faculty, and the larger GPS community. Whether they signed up for a committee, participated in a listening session, or showed their support through philanthropy, they made their commitment to their school loud and clear. Alumnae who had lost touch with GPS over the years reconnected. One alumna in particular had not been on campus since the Olympic-sized pool was installed over 20 years ago. When she came back to campus for her reunion weekend, she was blown away by the physical changes since her last visit, but even more importantly, she was touched by the overwhelmingly positive energy that she felt the minute that she stepped onto campus. A past parent and faculty member whose daughters graduated in the early 80s read the summer 2014 issue of the GPS magazine and was touched by a quote from Dr. Graves, “There is a great opportunity at GPS to leverage the experience, the wisdom, and the ideas that already are there at the school and really move from wanting collaboration to expecting it.” Being a highly active parent when her girls were students, those words resonated with her, emphasizing the importance of teaching girls 21st-century skill sets like collaboration. As a way to show her support, she mailed a check to the school for $20,000, the first gift that she had given to GPS in 10 years. Whether you gave $50,000 or five dollars, we want to thank you for supporting this past year’s Annual Fund. It was another successful year for the annual fund, which is the vehicle that helps to close the gap between tuition and our annual budget. Because we believe in the new leadership at GPS, we have both committed to another year as Co-Chairs and look forward to being leaders for the 2015-16 GPS Annual Fund. This year we anticipate even more volunteer involvement, in addition to fun and new ways to get involved. If you are interested in serving on our committee, please let us know. We would love to have you on our team. We are looking forward to working with the Development staff this year in setting another record with an aggressive goal of $1.2 million. We are fortunate to have a beautiful campus and a talented and creative faculty, but as is the case with business operations at all independent schools, tuition alone does not cover the costs to manage the grounds and buildings and retain talented faculty and staff.

The Development Office works to fill a $4,300 gap between tuition and what it actually costs to educate each student. To accomplish this, we facilitate a number of fundraising activities throughout the year, the largest being our Annual Fund that approaches upwards of $1 million. AnnUal Fund Alumnae gifts
The Class of 1965, following the lead of classes before them, showed appreciation for their GPS experience by giving back in honor of their 50th Reunion. The Class raised $65,977 for the GPS Annual Fund, exceeding their $65,000 goal. Yet, there is so much more to the story. No one wanted to take credit for putting the effort over the goal, so three of the last gifts were anonymous. One of those was given in honor of the entire class; what a wonderful example of working together to say thanks.

Mad, Bad and Dangerous
Mad, Bad and Dangerous was designed to inspire women and girls and identify the resources to help them in their entrepreneurial journey. Based on the founding mothers of GPS, three public school teachers who wanted girls to have equal access to a college preparatory education, the name describes how those women may have been viewed in 1906 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Celebrating their success, MBD exists to encourage more women to solve problems through a business startup or expansion or social enterprise.

The inaugural Mad, Bad and Dangerous event on February 28, 2015, was a major success. Nearly 500 women, girls, and men attended soldout workshops about entrepreneurship, learned about new technology in the Tech Tinkering Lab, visited 50 womenowned businesses in the Marketplace, and heard messages from Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, plus the inspirational mother/daughter team and founders of Blamtastic, Renee and Lily Sandler.
