GPS IS
One in a Million The school pride communicated in the above statement is just part of what attracted me to serve as the interim head for this outstanding school for young women. It does not take long to realize the deep roots and history that permeate this special place. I have enjoyed reading the account by Grace McCallie, Tommy Duffy and Eula Lea Jarnagin of the school’s beginning in Don’t Say ‘You’, Say ‘We’. These women were visionaries, pioneers, and Renaissance women of their era. This quotation from their story continues to resonate with the purpose of the school today: It was considered acceptable for women to learn practical knowledge, but teaching the mind how to investigate a subject and to draw conclusions had not previously been a goal of women’s education. Consequently, when Miss Duffy said that her ideal was to teach girls to think and to rejoice in it, and when Miss Jarnagin said that the purpose of GPS was to teach a girl to study and stay with a job until it was finished, they were speaking about ideas that were not particularly popular. In fact, preparing girls for college was not a popular idea. Now as we enter the 108th year of GPS, we are embarking upon a time of transition, one that is normal and inevitable in the life of a strong and vibrant institution. What will not change, however, is our commitment to the Founders’ mission, which is to educate young women to be smart and confident leaders. Further, it is the Founders’ vision that will also lead us forward to the new and exciting chapters that lie ahead. My first weeks were filled with getting to know the GPS community. Best of all was when the students arrived back on campus. I first hosted the senior class and then new families at Founders House; met with committed and longtime donors of the school, and conversed with a dynamic group of young alumnae. I greet the students in the mornings at the carpool drop-off among a sea of beautiful colored uniforms and watch lovely, eager young women arrive on campus determined to learn more about themselves and to discover a voice of purpose each day. I marvel at the spacious and beautiful facilities these students have in which to learn and grow into empowered young women, and I realize how fortunate GPS is to have such dedicated and passionate administrators, faculty, and staff. This Annual Report summarizes the success of the past school year. Look through the pages and be inspired by the accomplishments of our students and faculty and by the commitment and generosity of so many donors and volunteers. As we celebrate all that has been achieved and work together to usher the school into a new chapter in its history, we move ahead knowing that we sustain a school that is first and foremost about girls and their education. Framing Her Future captures well the essence of our endeavor. Here, in this unique setting, each girl strengthens her intellect, leadership skills, creativity, confidence, and willingness to be authentic. In other words, here, in this exceptional school, each girl frames her own bright future. GPS is poised for a great future due to the vision and leadership of longtime head of school Randy Tucker. His dedicated 26-year service to this school and its students fortified the founding mission and paved the way for the success that lies ahead. On behalf of the entire GPS community, I sincerely thank each donor and volunteer listed in this impressive report. You are, indeed, loyal and committed individuals who collectively are moving GPS forward as a financially secure institution. As I contemplate that phrase “one in a million,” I am confident that when the Annual Report is published a year from now, we will have attained the long-awaited goal of a $1 million dollar Annual Fund and will be positioned well to welcome a new head of school.

Intellect The 89 seniors of the
Class of 2013
are attending 53 colleges and universities in 24 states and the District of Columbia. 80% received scholarship offers totaling approximately $9 million, and 67% of the class are using those scholarships. GPS offers
20 Advanced Placement courses, and 78% of seniors enrolled in at least one AP course, with 35% taking AP Calculus. Fifty juniors and seniors received awards from the AP program, and two were named National AP Scholars.

Creativity Fine Arts invites artists, dancers, singers, actors, and musicians to express their creativity. Among AP students who took Art History or Studio Art courses, 94% earned qualifying scores. Over 40 girls were members of one or more orchestras, a string quartet, or band. As Terpsichord neared its 60th anniversary in 2013-14, we delighted in the
graceful movements of
the 27 dancers and applauded the versatility of the 35 members of Middle School Motion Makers. In two fall plays, Winter One-Acts, and the spring production of Footloose, over 150 girls demonstrated their dramatic and
musical gifts.
Forty vocalists joined GPS Singers and Coordinate Choir to provide harmony throughout the year.

Fund Several days ago, I read an article simply entitled “Women Make all the Difference in the World.” As I read, I began thinking about the women in my life (my family, friends and colleagues) and just how many of these women “give back.” I reflected on the meaningful contributions they make to their local communities and to the world and realized just how true the article’s title really is…women do make all the difference in the world! It is with deepest gratitude that I thank you for your support of the 2012-2013 Annual Fund. Your donation allows GPS to provide girls with an exceptional education, to create leaders who are powerful, trustworthy and compassionate; and to help each GPS girl fulfill her dreams. But, that’s not all. Your support of the Annual Fund helps to ensure our mission is fulfilled – “to create leaders by engaging the mind, stimulating the spirit, instilling values and self-confidence, and challenging girls to recognize their membership in the global community.” Your donation helps educate young women who recognize their social responsibility and who are willing and prepared to create a more sustainable, honorable, and compassionate society locally and globally. In short, your donation helps to educate and develop the young women who soon will be making all the difference in the world! Influence Last year GPS students raised over $20,000 for 12 different organizations; an additional $25,000 was secured for Habitat for Humanity. Most GPS students spend an average of 20-30 hours
serving the community each
year and come to understand the impact their service makes in tutoring children, socializing shelter animals, cooking for the Ronald McDonald House, or
helping
with Special Olympics. Students in the environmental science class harvested 600 pounds of food from the GPS garden and donated it to the Chattanooga Area Food Bank. Side by side with McCallie boys, our girls helped build the coordinate effort’s 16th home for a Habitat for Humanity family. GPS students prepare to become global citizens by
learning how to have influence and create change.

Goals
In 2012-13, 68% of Upper School students and 70% from the Middle School stepped up to the
physical
challenge in one or more of 36 teams in the
15 sports offered. In the graduating class, eight received scholarships to continue their sport – swimming, basketball, soccer, track and field, volleyball, softball, and lacrosse – at the collegiate level. Five Bruiser athletes won state or regional titles. Eleven athletes received All-State recognition, and four were named All-American. Through athletics, GPS students pursue excellence, build character, and lay the foundation for a lifetime of
achievement.

Tucker Fellows PROGRAM DONORS
We extend our sincere thanks to the following donors who during the spring of 2013 established the Tucker Fellows Program (TFP) – an innovative program focusing on the conservation of the Tennessee River – in honor of Randy Tucker’s 26-year tenure at GPS. TFP will be an intensive interdisciplinary and experiential study program that will allow GPS to partner with area businesses and organizations and help students better understand the historical, ecological, political, economical, and aesthetic significance of our local watershed. This creative program will inspire our girls to effect change for the betterment of our community.

Since 1945, every girl has participated in the Honor System by signing her name to the pledge and committing to integrity, honesty, and consideration for others. Recent graduates will remember the Junior Ring Events that began over 20 years ago, and today’s Middle School students are once again on competitive Black, Blue, and White teams. Ways of Giving There are numerous ways to support GPS while providing you with substantial tax, estate planning, and other financial benefits. It is your philanthropic support that can have the most significant impact on the success of this school’s programs. A member of the Development staff is happy to assist you and your financial advisor to determine a plan which meets your needs and strengthens the financial future for GPS. Gifts of Cash An outright gift of cash has the most immediate impact on GPS, and in most cases, it is tax deductible. These gifts can be made by check, credit card, and online at www.gps.edu. Gifts of Appreciated Securities Donating gifts of appreciated securities that have been held for more than one year enables a donor to: avoid all capital gains tax on the appreciated portion of the stock; qualify for tax deduction equal to the stock’s full fair market value; make a larger gift than might be otherwise possible. Contact Bess Steverson for further information. Matching Gifts Many corporations offer matching gift programs for their employees’ or their spouses’ gifts to their schools. Most programs match dollar for dollar, but there are some companies that match 2:1 and even 3:1. This is a great opportunity and allows you and your class to be credited with the matching corporate gift. Contact your human resources office for a matching gift form and return the completed form to Girls Preparatory School Development Office, P.O. Box 4736, Chattanooga, TN 37405, ATTN: Julie Prescott. The Bruiser Gift Plan Several donors already make contributions to GPS through monthly or quarterly credit or electronic bank draft payments. The Bruiser Plan provides a convenient and effortless method for spreading payment of your gift over a year or longer. Some donors, especially young alumnae and leadership donors, have seized the opportunity of the Bruiser Plan and have joined a gift club by paying their pledge throughout the fiscal year. A Planned Gift There are many ways to name GPS in your estate which also benefit your personal financial situation. Benefits include making a gift that does not interrupt current cash flow or portfolio, reducing gift and estate taxes, and creating a gift from something other than capital to minimize tax deductions. The Cornerstone Society is comprised of donors who have named GPS in their estate plans through a planned giving vehicle. There are a number of possible avenues to take in making a planned gift to GPS: a Bequest (cash, securities, or real property); Charitable Lead or Charitable Remainder Trust; Gift Annuities; Real Estate, or a Life Insurance Policy.
