16 RRV Playbook HOHENBERGER PARIS WILDCATS

I n re ent years the Paris ild ats ha e established themsel es as perennial on tenders always in the hunt for a distri t hampionship. his year the ild ats ha e the talent and the onfiden e to assert them sel es in a wide open distri t and ha e their eyes set on lofty goals. was a bit of a mi ed bag for the ild ats filled with tremendous highs and disappointing lows all ulminating in a trip to the se ond round of the playoffs. Positi es in luded a big distri t win o er aufman and an utterly dominating show ing in the bi distri t round of the postseason against allas in oln. ows in luded a disappointing showing against the then distri t ri al elissa ardi nals in a game that drew hea y anti ipation after the two teams met in an epi regional semifinals showdown the year prior. ut hardships also e tended past the football field as the team was shaken by the tragi death of former Paris ild at handler ikes right before the start of distri t play. ast year was a diffi ult year for e ery one head oa h te en ohenberger said. hat tragedy ut us to our ore and I don’t think we e er fully re o ered from that. ut I ouldn’t be more proud of that team and espe ially those seniors and the way they ust left it all out on the field. fter making the playoffs as their distri t’s third seed the ild ats had an unfortunate draw and had to play the e entual state hampions the tephen ille ellow a k ets in ust the se ond round. hey held their own for mu h of the game e en limiting the ellow a kets to ust a pair of field goals in the first half but a late push by tephen ille spelled the end of Paris’ season. tephen ille was ob iously a ery good team but we weren’t intimidated by them ohenberger said. e felt like we were right there with them. er the past few years Paris has played in perhaps the most hallenging distri t in all of e as high s hool football. Four of the teams in the distri t of whi h one has been the ild ats ha e spent e tensi e time ranked in the top of football. f those the rgyle agles re ently won a state hampionship and elissa has been onsidered a serious ontender. I like how hallenging our distri t has been senior lineman Patri k oland said. I feel like it makes us better. ut is a realignment year meaning the ild ats will s uare up against a slate of distri t foes this year that looks ery different from the distri t of the past few years. one are rgyle and elissa as they’ e made the ump to ompete in the si e lassifi ation. one too are the an h iew ol es and errell igers. ew to Paris’ distri t are abank om munity and ulphur prings and the shakeup has the ild ats feeling good as they prepare for the oming year. ulphur prings has a new oa hing staff this year ohenberger said. It’ll be interesting to see what they bring to the pro gram and how they’ll look. abank and ommunity are great pro grams with e ellent oa hing staffs. hey’re ery similar to say us and Pleasant ro e as far as what their offensi e philosophy and approa h is.

The team has plenty of talent, but only time will tell if they’ll be able to adapt to their new roles.

nd while Paris did ha e a si able senior lass in they return plenty of talent on both sides of the ball. I think we’re the best team in the dis tri t said a onfident homas a senior tight end and defensi e lineman on the team. e always felt like we were right there with rgyle and elissa but now that they’re gone I think the distri t is wide open. homas’ onfiden e is shared by e ery one on the team and they’re ready for what they hope is to be a landmark season. Offense perating out of a wing system Paris’ gameplan on the offensi e side has always entered around running the ball. nd ne er a team to rely on ust one or two running ba ks the ild ats ha e been known to throw a slew of rushers at oppos ing defenses whi h in turns opens things up for the air atta k. hough they throw the ball infre uently the ’ ats typi ally do so with great effi ien y be ause of the way their ground atta k opens things up. nd while Paris’ style of play isn’t going to hange any time soon the team’s personnel will be signifi antly different from last year’s. one are the team’s two leading rushers yri redwell and i aeus oung. tepping up to fill the role of the team’s two primary ba ks will be aydri k awson and re in ohenberger. oth got playing time last year and showed ashes of brilliant potential.aydri k was great last year and hon estly we probably should’ e let him run the ball e en more when you look at his yards per arry whi h were ust e ellent te en ohenberger said with a hu kle. re in also had some ery good moments and he’s had an e ellent summer so I’m e ited to see how he’s impro ed heading into this new season. e’ e got lots of athleti ism Paris senior adyn onald said. I think that’s going to be our biggest strength this year ust our strength and athleti ism.

RRV Playbook s last season de eloped awson be ame the team’s third most used running ba k. nd while re in o henberger re ei ed fewer handoffs he made the most of the han es he did re ei e.nd omplementing the ba kfield will be players like li ah urner or day ooper rayden e k ar a e’us ashington and others. e’re always going to ha e talented kids at Paris igh year in and year out te en ohenberger said. It’s ust a matter of e perien e. hese kids ha en’t been the guy’ yet but it’s their time to step up and show that they ha e what it takes. eanwhile Paris is also losing its uarterba k to graduation and the head oa h said it’s still not de ided who will be taking the reins at uarter ba k usthat’syet.the uestion e eryone is asking ho’s going to be the new uarterba k ’ te en ohenberger said. he e iting thing is that we’ e got options. e’re going to ust need to see who’s going to end up win ning that battle and lead our offense. ne of the players in the running for the starting uarterba k spot is unior li ard who uarterba ked the team last year. lso showing promise in the role though is sopho more alik ohnson. ohnson has played uarterba k his entire football areer e ept for last year and also made the most of his limited arsity playing time. In Paris’ first game last year he aught a long tou hdown pass. nd in the team’s playoff game against tephen ille he returned a ki koff for a tou hdown the biggest play of his young football areer. te en ohenberger also pointed to his team’s orps of tight ends as an aspe t of the offense that has him e ited.It starts with Preston arper who’s started o er games for us o er the years. ordan Perkins was a sophomore who showed some real signs of potential last year milio e sendi is a ery good player and we’ e got a transfer in andon Pin kard who we’re ery e ited about too. nd the unsung heroes will again be the offensi e line. wins te en and eslee angley oland and younger brother atthew oland and iego itua are among the players up front who will gi e those with the ball the time and spa e they need to operate. I e pe t big things from our of fense te en ohenberger said. e lost some guys last year but I know these guys ha e what it takes. It’s ust a matter of how well they e e ute. defense Paris’ alling ard has long been its defense and that shouldn’t be e pe ted to hange in . e’re a program that prides it self on defense te en ohenberger said. It’s what we hang our hats on. e ha e a sign in our lo ker room that says he best defense in the state meets here ’ and that’s always our goal and our e pe tation. I think our is our biggest strength homas said. hat’s what’s going to win us games. Paris’ defense up front will again be imposing and players like homas Patri k oland al ador ome and eondre Patt will play a key role on the defensi e line. homas might well pro e to be one of the top defensi e linemen in the area and the distri t this season after en oying a breakout year in . ur front se en is going to be dominant I think onald said. e’ e got big guys with lots of e pe rien e. nd while re in ohenberger is a promising player on offense he might ery well be the best defender in the whole of the ed i er alley. lineba ker he has a spe ial kna k for bursting through opponents’ offensi e lines and bringing guys down for a loss. ith ta kles in his first arsity season in re in ohenberger a tually led his team in ta kles as a new omer.rein ohenberger will be oined in the lineba ker unit by arper hmad ills awson and more. nd meanwhile the team’s se ondary is no slou h either. Players like y urian ouglas ohnson and ohnathan ones made teams think twi e before throwing the ball down field against Paris last year and se eral new players will be stepping into larger roles in the se ondary in luding e k and Forashington.homas the team’s true defensi e prowess doesn’t ome from the time spent in the weight room or the time studying film but from the olle ti e heart of the team. It’s about mentality he said. The orth amar Panthers ha e had a rough go of things in re ent years with wins being hard to ome by. espite that the team is onfident that better days are ahead and is looking forward to what they hope is a breakout season. In the ba k half of the season howe er the team struggled losing its last four games and ultimately missing the playoffs. e all feel like that shouldn’t ha e happened we were better than that hisum senior rayden rown said. I definitely think it’s made all of us a lot more fo used oming into this season. ording to hisum head oa h ar ren Pe ey the team’s regression was tied to some off field behind the s enes issues. ur hemistry and ohesion got all out of wha k last year in the middle of distri t Pe ey said. e’ e got to get ba k to playing for one another again. nd I think that on e we do that e erything else will take are of itself be ause the talent is there.Pe ey also said the team seemed to peak too early playing its best football of the year midway through the season and then wearing down in the latter games. e an’t get ompla ent he said. he way we do that is by not getting ompla ent. It’s a li he but you do that by taking things one day at a time one rep at a time one game at a time. hisum senior rayden rown e hoed Pe ey’s assessment and added that he felt the team’s preseason didn’t prepare them for the top teams in the distri t. e played a lot of teams in the pre season that weren’t really a mat h for us rown said. nd then we were playing our best football when we still had more than half a season left. spn lyton another senior on the team said he doesn’t think that will be an issue thisheyear.way you a oid that is by playing harder teams in the preseason and we’re definitely doing that this year lyton said. his is probably the most sta ked preseason we’ e had sin e I’ e been here. he ustangs are onfident that with the right mindset as well as the more hal lenging preseason they ha e what it takes to work their way ba k into the postseason. ealignment made the distri t slightly easier as aingerfield the ba k to ba k defending distri t hampions were repla ed with a ew oston team that isn’t nearly as intimidating. ut with the e alb ears and Pewitt rahmas both loaded with talent the ustangs know their dis tri t is far from a akewalk. I honestly think we ha e one of the toughest distri ts in rown said. ut that ust means we ha e to fully buy in. e an hang with anyone in our distri t if we’re playing up to our apabilities. o he ustangs ha e for years run an un on entional offense known as the slot whi h is highly effe ti e at immediately putting defenses on a ba k foot. In re ent years the ustangs had honed the system down to an e a t s ien e with the ba ks knowing the playbook inside and out. In howe er the team will need to rely on running ba ks far less familiar with the offense.one to graduation are hris orthy shton Fleming a ua ious Pri e and ett Petkus. hat uartet for years arried the offensi e load for hisum and now the team will turn to largely untested play ers to arry on the tradition. ophomore yle elley is mo ing into the role of the starting running ba k and though he’s new to arsity football he already has the oa hes ra ing about his potential.e’s not the biggest kid but he is a football player plain and simple Pe ey said. e’s agile uts e tremely well and he’s good for our offense. oining him in the ba kfield at fullba k is ohnson a player who was on the arsity s uad last year but didn’t get mu h playing time. It’s a new year now and that stuff is in the past. e’ e got to ontinue working hard to be better than we were yesterday. hough the ulldogs know they an’t take anything for granted simply be ause of the prior two seasons the streak is something that they’re keenly aware of and it’s something they’re moti ated to keep going. I want to lea e it all out on the field for my senior year and be e en better than last year senior uarterba k olin Ingram said. If they an get past their se ond round they should be able to make a run se eral rounds past that.It omes down to a lot of hard work Ingram said. e’ e got the talent we’ e got the potential. It’s ust a matter of now going out and doing it. o he ulldogs are ele tri offensi ely mo ing the ball at a freneti pa e that keeps oppos ing defenses off balan e. e’re fast plain and simple Ingram said. I’d argue we’re the fastest team in the entire region be ause we’ e got ust a ton of guys who an turn on the ets. ne of the players who will be leading that up tempo aggressi e offense is Ingram himself. dual threat uarterba k Ingram last year a ounted for nearly all purpose yards. olin is a tremendous athlete and leader astorena said. e really understands our system at an e tremely high le el. ast year was his first as starting uarterba k for us and I e pe t him to ha e an e en better season this go around be ause of that added e perien e. ith anon Ingram and mith I’ e got two of the best ba ks around. hen with guys like eywine up the middle these guys make me look good honestly olin Ingram said. onestly these guys make my ob a lot easier than people think it is. In the ebels were not ust ine perien ed their uarterba k ea h run ning ba k and entire re ei ing orps were newly minted starters but they were also learning the playbook of a new head oa h in y owuie.with a season together under their belt the team also feels more om fortable running his brand of football and that’s e pe ted to make a big differen e the players and oa hes agree. oa h uie is great we all really like him and we’ e bought in to what he’s tea hing aylor said. I think one of the problems we ran into defensi ely last year was that we were gassed ea h time we took the field on defense and it put us at a disad antage.nereason for e itement this year uie added is a new defensi e oordinatorierrest’s biggest defensi e strength lies in its adre of line ba kers all of whom are fast and physi al. aylor leads the lineba ker orps and should be one of the top defensi e players in the area. than gets after it uie said. he guy is a pure ompetitor. obody is going to out work him and he’s the type of guy to be a o al leader and someone who leads by e ample.oining him at the lineba ker position are a uan rown han e uffer and aden elsoe. I think our outside lineba ker play is going to be mu h impro ed this year uie ontinued. hey should do a good ob setting the edge and gi ing than the ability to make ta kles on the inside. ltal is another stalwart defender with loads of arsity e perien e who will be ital to the team’s su ess. e’s oined on the defensi e line by players like ade asley ra ton heney and aron aulston uie said.
