This guide should help you choose the right UNICO centrifuge for your specific needs.

A note of caution if you spin Urine specimens: If you have a fixed speed centrifuge, chances are very good it is set the RCF and speed for spinning blood samples only. Urine specimens must be spun at a greatly reduced RCF in order to properly prep the sample. If your facility is subject to CLIA and you spin urine samples in a blood centrifuge, the CLIA inspector may not allow the centrifuge to pass inspection. You will be asked to either stop spinning urine samples, or acquire a centrifuge capable of spinning at the correct RCF for separating urine samples.

The most important factor when choosing a centrifuge is the g-Force, or RCF, not the speed. The RCF determines the ability of a centrifuge to separate the specimen. Most specimens must be spun within a specific RCF range in order to properly prep the sample for testing and analysis. The guide below will help you select a model based on RCF, RPM, # of tubes, specimens and other attributes.

CLIA, Calibration and speed checking: Your lab or practice may be subject to CLIA regulations if what you do is considered to be "moderately complex", or "highly complex". CLIA, (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment of 1988); may dictate that your centrifuges need to be "Calibrated" every 6 months. CLIA inspectors may visit your facility to make sure you are maintaining your equipment and following protocols; and that your equipment is capable of performing the protocols properly, etc.

Calibration involves using a tachometer to check the speed of your centrifuge for accuracy. CLIA inspectors will "pass" a centrifuge that operates within plus or minus 100 RPM of the actual setting. If for example, your centrifuge is set to spin at 3,400 RPM; CLIA will pass it if it is anywhere between 3,300 and 3,500 RPM; as long as your protocol calls for spinning in that range as well. How to calculate RCF:

RCF = Relative Centrifugal Force (also known as “G-Force”)

Centrifuge RCF Calculation: RCF = 1.12 x R(mm) x Krpm x Krpm where R: Centrifuge rotor radius (mm) and Krpm: Centrifuge speed in thousands

Example: If rotor radius is 102mm, speed is 3.4Krpm (3400rpm), then RCF = 1.12 x 102 x 3.4 x 3.4 = 1320g

PowerSpin™ Centrifuges, BX PowerSpin™ Centrifuge, BX The BX is a versatile, state of the art variable-speed centrifuge series with three rotor options. Options are: • Blood/Urine Tube, 2-12 ml Rotor: Max Speed = 5,000 RPM • Microhematocrit/Capillary Tube Rotor: Max Speed = 11,000 RPM • Microcentrifuge Tube, 0.5-3 ml Rotor: Max Speed = 13,000 RPM

Your BX can be a dedicated centrifuge with any one of the rotors, or a versatile addition to your lab with up to three interchangeable rotors with speeds from 1,000 – 13,000 RPM. BX Centrifuges have advanced safety features such as a Zero RPM lid latch control system (which makes sure the lid can not be opened if the rotor is spinning), a stainless steel rotor chamber, Auto-unbalance detection and shut-down (will shut-down the motor if an off-balance condition is detected). Colpo-Master™ I, II, and III Colposcopes by UNICO Selection Guide: Selecting the right Colposcope for your current and future needs can be challenging. The following information is provided to help you make an informed decision regarding the applications, models and accessories available from UNICO. First qualifying question: Do you do exams, or exams and procedures? If you do procedures, unobstructed access to the patient is of paramount importance. In this case, we strongly recommend a Suspension Arm Colposcope. The optical head hangs suspended above which allows clear access to the patient; room to work with instruments and LEEP equipment, etc. If you not plan to do procedures, a Center Post Colposcope will not only be less expensive, it has a smaller footprint.

Second qualifying question: Do you plan to use EMR programs now, or in the future? If you plan to do EMR at any point, we recommend you start with one of our “Camera-Ready” Trinocular models. If you purchase a Binocular model, there is no way to add a camera at a later date. Instead, you would need to purchase an entirely new Camera-Ready head. The Camera-Ready models cost a little more than a Binocular model at the time of original purchase; however, they are significantly less than if you have to purchase later an entirely new Camera-Ready head later.

Wear your glasses! With most UNICO microscopes, you can wear your glasses while looking through the microscope because we offer “High-Eyepoint Eyepieces”. If this is an important feature to you, make sure to select a model with High Eyepoint eyepieces.

LED Illuminators: UNICO is in the process of transitioning our microscopes to LED illuminators, away from traditional Halogen light sources. While we still offer many models with Halogen, we are increasing the number of LED models. Phase contrast objectives require the use of a matching annulus in the condenser. We offer two phase annulus sliders as shown to the left. The first is matched to the 10x and 40x objectives, and the other is matched to the 20x and 100x objectives. Using these sliders makes phase contrast quick and easy as compared to traditional turret condensers.

Product Header Zoom Stereomicroscopes Stereo Zoom IVF/ET Microscopes The ZM188’s are configured for IVF/ET, or In Vitro Fertilization Pre-Embryo Transfer. Using the specially designed microscope, you can place the light source to illuminate from the top (incident), or from the bottom (transmitted). The Diascopic base allows excellent viewing of unstained translucent specimens with transmitted (bottom) illumination. This is accomplished by bouncing the incoming light off a mirror mounted in the base, so the light strikes the specimen at just the right angle to increase contrast and clarity of transparent & translucent specimens. A special configuration of optics provides a continuous magnification Zoom Range of 10.5X – 67.5X; everything you need for IVF / ET.
