On June 2, 85-year-old school bus driver and Penn Manor alumna Ella Sensenig was honored for 41 years of service with Penn Manor School District. During the celebration, Sensenig was presented with flowers, a giant cookie, a charm bracelet with a bus on it, and other gifts. Sensenig, who grew up in Safe Harbor, moved to Millersville a few years after marrying her husband in 1955. Her aunt and uncle had built the house she and her husband purchased, and she has lived there ever since. Throughout her life, Sensenig has worked several jobs. She started her career as a bus driver for the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (CTC). This was a part-time position in the evenings. When a full time driving position opened, she filled it. For 30 years between her bus runs, she was a crossing guard. Sensenig also worked in a research lab after graduating from Penn Manor, was a part-time police officer in Millersville, and served as a nurse’s aid. “Not a lot of people can say this, but there are no jobs I had that I didn’t like,” she said. “That pleases me a lot.” Sensenig said she is not as eager as many people are to retire. “Physically, I’m fine. I would love to keep going, but I’d like to go out with a good record!” she stated with a laugh. One thing she regrets is not taking the time to write down events that happened over the course of her career. “I could probably write a book!”

she exclaimed. “The kids, their parents, and the Eschbach Bus Service have been so good to me.” Although she does not consider herself a hobby-oriented person, Sensenig plans to buy a few paint-bynumber kits to keep herself busy in the wintertime. “But I love driving,” she said. “As soon as I get on that crazy bus, I feel different. Amateur Radio Field Day Posted Members of the Red Rose Repeater Association will participate in the national Amateur Radio Field Day exercise on Saturday and Sunday, June 26 and 27, at 773 County Line Road, Gap. This event is open to the public, and the club particularly recommends stopping by on Saturday between 2 and 6 p.m. The event will close by 2 p.m. on Sunday. For more than 100 years, amateur radio - also called ham radio - has allowed persons from all walks of life to experiment with electronics and communications techniques, as well as provide a free public

service to their communities during a disaster or emergency, all without needing a cellphone or the internet. Through amateur radio, people can explore electronics, physics, meteorology, and numerous other areas of science. Field Day demonstrates ham radio’s ability to create reliable communications independent of commercial networks, under adverse conditions from almost anywhere. Since 1933, amateur radio operators across North America have established temporary radio stations in public locations during Field Day to

showcase the science and skill of amateur radio. In 2019, more than 35,000 people from thousands of locations participated in Field Day; last year, participants numbered almost 19,000. Anyone may become a licensed amateur radio operator. There are more than 725,000 licensed ham radio operations in the United States ranging in age from 9 to 102. For more information about Field Day or amateur radio, visit www.w3rrr.org or visit www.arrl.org/what -is-ham-radio.

Lady Comets Wrap Up 21-5 Season

BY MONA STEINHAUER

R068520

As they have all season, Penn Manor’s softball team put forth their best effort but came up against a team that had a little more. The Comets’ season ended with a respectable 4-0 loss to North Penn in the PIAA 6A State Quarterfinals in Boyertown on June 10. The loss leaves them with an impressive 21-5 record overall. “Anytime you win 20 games in a season, you’re doing pretty well,” said head coach Dave

Stokes. “That number is tough to make because you have to win some playoff games.” The Comets came into the post-season with a 17-3 record and picked up three playoff wins against two losses. As for their meeting with North Penn (24-2), the Comets could not solve the Knights pitcher Mady Volpe who piled up 13 strikeouts, including the side in the seventh, and surrendered just two hits. “Coming in we heard that Volpe had 295 strikeouts on

Provided as a community service by this civic minded publication and the Association of Free Community Publications

the year,” noted Stokes. “That’s more than Brittany Hook had her freshman year for us. She finished with 276 which is the L-L League record.” Kaelin Gable singled in the second and Tori Hook added a base hit in the sixth for Manor’s only hits. North Penn, on the other hand, pounded out 13 hits but managed just four runs as the Comets buckled down defensively. Gianna Cimino belted a two out, two-run double in the third to give the Knights a 2-0 lead. They widened their advantage in the seventh with an RBI base hit, with another run scoring due to an error on the play. “Bella (Peters) did a nice job,” said Stokes. “To only give up four runs is a solid effort. We took her out in the seventh and brought in Emily Riggs. She gave up a hit to left field, but Kylie Goss threw a runner out at home by probably three steps, so we did some good things.” Volpe struck out eight of the nine batters she faced from the second to the fourth inning. “ We came up against a pitcher who pitched a style we haven’t seen all year,” Stokes stated. “She threw with good velocity and had a good change-up. It’s hard to beat a pitcher that can get 16 to 18 outs a game by herself. “Sophia Rineer led off the

game with our hardest hit of the day and they had an error on the play,” he recalled. “But then we made two strikeouts. “I was really pleased with this group. What disappoints me most is that as good as we were, we didn’t win any hardware. I felt this group deserved a bit more, but it wasn’t in the cards. Our record is one of the best in Penn Manor photo by Mona Steinhauer history,” he added. “Two times, with Comet catcher Tori Hook led this year’s group of seniors with the highest Brittany Hook pitch- batting average (.532). ing, we had at least 20 wins. It would have been the section. Those included Riggs (second base, .563 avg.), nice to come away with some- seniors Kaelin Gable (third a junior, also made the top 18 base, .471 batting average), while Bella Peters (3.24 ERA, thing to put on a banner.” For their efforts, the Tori Hook (catcher, .532 avg.), 84K and 26W at the time of Comets were well represented Sophia Rineer (shortstop, voting) was an Honorable in the recent all-star voting, .414 avg.) and Madison Trout Mention selection. with five making the top 18 in (first base, .397 avg.). Tips Posted For Grilling A Tasty Burger Summer weekends would not be the same without backyard barbecues, and among the staples of these events is the hamburger. And no backyard barbecue is complete without hamburgers. Exactly what defines the perfect hamburger may be open to debate, but there is no denying the desirability of juicy burgers. As grill masters prepare for another season of barbecues, they may consider trying the following tips to make juicier burgers. They may start by avoiding extra-lean meat. Extra-lean meat might be healthier than the alternatives, but 93% lean ground beef is unlikely

to produce juicy burgers. When making burgers from scratch, cooks should opt for 80% lean. The fat helps to hold burgers together while searing and cooking the meat. The result is a juicier interior than cooks are likely to get when using lean meats. Another option is to swap beef for lamb. Lamb is moist, so unlike lean beef, it can be grilled until well done without drying out. Lamb also offers a different taste than beef, adding a little variety to a backyard barbecue. Grill masters should avoid overusing their spatula. Flipping the burgers too much or pressing them against the

Gospel Music Celebration

grill as they cook can dry them out. It is also important to be conscious of carryover cooking time. Carryover cooking time refers to the length of time temperature in a food continues to rise even after it has been removed from a cooking area. Beef is among the many foods that continue to cook after being removed from a heat source, so beef burgers can be removed from the grill before they reach the desired cooking temperature. This precaution prevents drying out and ensures that once they are served, the burgers will be juicy and safe to eat.

The Lancaster County Conservation District has announced three Ann Brown Memorial Scholarship program winners for 2021. Over the past year, these students have demonstrated resilience and expressed an interest in using their college studies to make a difference with the future health of the natural environment. Andrew Rajaratnam, a senior at Manheim Central High School, received a $1,000 scholarship. The son of Reuban Rajaratnam and Maithili Navaratnarajah of Manheim, Andrew plans to major in chemical engineering at Penn State University. A $1,000 scholarship was presented to Lilly Heilshorn, a senior at Hempfield High School and the daughter of Eric and Kimberly Heilshorn of Lancaster. Lilly plans to

noted Stokes. “Without Covid causing us to miss a season, we would have had the same infield for three straight years. I don’t think that has ever happened in my 30 years of coaching. “We return Riggs, who will probably step in to pitch, along with outfielders Kylie Goss, Audrey Patterson, and sophomore Bria Booth. But we have sophomores Maddie Mitchell and Katelyn Ream along with four notable freshmen (Kira Green, Jordan Bailey, Janelle Bowmaster and Reagan Soboleski) that we anticipate stepping in.” This year’s group holds the school record for most home runs in a season with 30. “We had eight different players connect for multiple home runs,” Stokes pointed out. “Emily led that group with seven and Tori had five. But Audrey, Kaelin, Sophia, Madi, Bella and Kylie also chipped in with at least two each. This group worked hard in the weight room and worked hard at practice. They were always there early and often stayed late. I really enjoyed this group.”
