SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954

Give A Hand At Homefields BY COURTNEY MENGEL

Located on a 23-acre organic farm at 150 Letort Road, Millersville, Homefields Care Farm is a nonprofit communitysupported agriculture (CSA) program that provides employment and training for disabled individuals. Hundreds of people who have a disability or other barrier to traditional employment have engaged at Homefields, where they grow organically minded produce for community shareholders. The farm is currently home to six adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. “What I love most about working here is the people,” stated farm manager Katie Landis. “Everyone is happy to be here.” Homefields’ season runs for 24 weeks, from the last week of May to the beginning of November. People can purchase shares of the harvest, which can be customized depending on the individual’s needs. Payment plans are also available. See Homefields pg 9

Martin Meylin Middle School principal Jamie Raum (left) and assistant principal Alicia Kowitz (right) present Truman Horst with the George Myers Award.

BY COURTNEY MENGEL

n January 1992, Maurine Myers Dukes established the George Myers Award as a 67th birthday gift for her father, George Myers. Myers served as principal of Martin Meylin Middle School (MMMS) for 26 years. In the 1960s, the LampeterStrasburg (L-S) school board gave Myers carte blanche to design a junior high school program. Myers showed his innovation and successfully implanted the team teaching concept that is the foundation of MMMS’ teaching model. Myers came to L-S with a military background.

I

After becoming the principal of MMMS, he was often referred to as “General George” while the school was nicknamed “The Fort.” His wife, Gladys “Ginger,” was an L-S library assistant. Together, they had three children who attended L-S. Myers presented the George Myers Award to the first recipient, Rebecca Badger, in June 1992. Ever since then, the award has been presented every year in Myers’ honor. Each year, the MMMS faculty chooses an eighth-grader who best exemplifies the values Myers held in high regard. A plaque on the wall of MMMS reads, “Myers was a man

who led by example and was willing to accept responsibility, but never hesitated to delegate authority to his team leaders. He lived by the rules and would always strive to do his best.” This year’s recipient of the George Myers Award was Truman Horst. “I feel like it could have gone to a lot of other people, but I try my best to show respect to my teachers and help my classmates when they need it,” said Horst. “I’d like to thank Jesus Christ and my family.” Horst noted that he might pursue a career in physical therapy in honor of his younger sibling with special needs.

“To me, the award should be given to a student who leads by example, helps everyone, and is a caring person, and that’s who Truman is,” stated MMMS principal Jamie Raum. “From what I’ve heard from the nominations, not only is Truman a very intelligent student, but he also likes to help people.” Raum explained that help from a peer is essential. “Studies have found that students learn better from their peers than from teachers, so when someone is willing to roll up his or her sleeves to help others out, it goes a long way.”

Apart from foundational classes in painting, drawing, sculpture, and printmaking, this summer features a number of new classes on more specific topics, such as Animal Specimen Drawing, Urban and Public Art, Tabletop Game Design, Creating Art in Photoshop, and Exploring Cultures Through Craft. To better help parents balance work with their children’s time in camp, CCE has partnered with coworking space The Candy Factory, Warehouse D, 342 N. Queen St., Lancaster, to offer a discounted weekly rate for adults with children in art classes. Parents are invited to drop their children off for camp in the morning, walk or drive two blocks to The Candy Factory to work, and then pick their children up when classes end. The pre-college courses are designed for students in ninth through 12th grades, allowing them to earn college credit. The two-week intensive classes with professional artists and faculty will be offered on campus or online or via a hybrid option. Classes will begin on July 12 and will run in two consecutive twoweek sessions, finishing by Friday, Aug. 6. See CCE pg 4

Pioneers Top West Scranton For 29th Win the ball got away from Emily Stevens. “But then we struck out twice,” noted Charles. “I was hoping we didn’t leave Chloe stranded.” Then Keiva Middleton stepped to the plate and calmly cracked a Blantz scoring double. Sydney Weichler entered as a courtesy runner and scored when shortstop Maddie Maloney threw away Emily Platt’s grounder. Not to be outdone, West Scranton, coming in with eight straight wins, looked to return the favor when Butka smacked a one out triple to right field. Middleton worked a strikeout and forced a popup to right to end the threat. The Pioneers had runners on base in all but the seventh inning. “I really expected us to break the game open. Then we got one more in the sixth and that was big.” L-S had two on and no outs in both the second and third innings and came up empty. Cam Byler opened the fifth with a first pitch base hit. Then, with one out, the Lady Invaders, turned a double play. One inning later, L-S picked up its last run of the game. Brooke Zuber doubled to left and Ally Raub walk. Both advanced on Julia Girard’s sacrifice bunt and Zuber scored on Karissa Hirt’s ground ball to second. West Scranton, making its first trip to states, threatened in the bottom half with two runners on and one out but a sacrifice bunt and a ground out ended the threat. “Kudos to the bottom half of our lineup,” said Charles. “They got the bat on the ball and accounted for four of our seven hits and just one strikeout. No one had more than one hit.” Middleton scattered four hits, struck out six and walked three. “Keiva did what she had to do,” said Charles. “She stays on top of things and knuckles down when she has to.”

With a second straight shutout last Monday (June 14) in Allentown, the Lady Pioneers punched their ticket to the PIAA Class 5A softball finals for the fourth time in five seasons. L-S blanked the 14-4 Lady Invaders in the semifinals at Patriots Park. The win is Lampeter’s 29th of the season, a new school record. “I was a bit nervous going in,” said head coach Gene Charles, “because they beat a good West Chester East squad and Elizabethtown (6-2), but kudos to Elizabethtown head coach Gary Wylde. He gave us a perfect scouting report and that helped. We knew the top five hitters were strong and that the bottom part of the lineup looked to bunt. We also knew their pitcher (Mia Butka) liked to throw the changeup. So, I thought we were prepared for what we knew about them.” And it didn’t hurt that L-S jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the very first inning. Chloe Blantz crushed a double to right field, taking third as

Karissa Hirt knocks in Lampeter’s sixth inning run on a sacrifice bunt against West Scanton last Monday, June 14, in Allentown.

Thursday, June 10 at Avon Grove High School the Pioneers earned a 5-0 shutout over Springfield (Delco), District 1 runner-up, scoring all but one run in the sixth inning. Defensively, Middleton tossed a two hitter, leading L-S to the semifinals for the second straight season. Offensively, the Pioneers were slow to get going. They finished with just seven hits on the day and five were in that pivotal sixth inning. Blantz and Daisy Frank got the inning going with back-to-back base hits and Byler loaded the bags with a blooper to short left. Middleton helped her cause, pushing in the second run of the game on a hit by pitch. Emily Platt’s base hit plated the second run of the inning before another hit batter (Zuber) forced in another run. Raub’s blooper to right made it 50. A strikeout and two popups ended the inning. Springfield looked to counter in the bottom half, opening with a base hit before Byler snagged a line drive and then stepped on first to complete a double play. Middleton forced a groundout to cap the inning and picked up a two out base hit in the seventh but was left stranded. The Cougars, helped along by uncharacteristic sloppy play by L-S, posed their biggest threat in the second inning. Three errors quickly put Springfield (17-6) runners on second and third with no outs. Platt charged a grounder to third and threw out Jordan Galloway for the first out and Middleton’s back-toback strikeouts left the Pioneers unscathed. “I rarely take a timeout to go out to the mound,” said Charles, “but things were not going well. I said ‘this isn’t us. Let’s put this behind us and play ball because if we don’t, there won’t be another big game.’”

the No. 9 hole and just kept working his way up in the lineup.” Harsh, another Pioneer pitcher, recorded one, save and had 21 strikeouts. “He performed well in every situation we put him in, whether he was starting or relieving. He was calm and collected each time he went out there.” Receiving Second Team recognition was senior Jake Long (.321 avg, 16 RBI’s) and Gehrig Harsh, a junior pitcher. “Jake committed to attend Washington College and was a mainstay in our lineup until he was injured in the L-L League semifinals and was out the rest of the year,” Swarr stated. “He is a great defensive outfielder. “Gehrig was extremely strong out of the bullpen for us all season,” he continued. “He started against some of the toughest opponents in our crossover games with Warwick and Manheim Township. “The guys all invest a lot of time being the best version of themselves and we are extremely honored to coach them.”

He was in control of himself in every situation and worked hard for every piece of success he earned this year. “We could also say the same thing of Jack,” he continued. “He competes in every pitch and was extremely steady throughout the year. His stats (1.43 ERA) may not be flashy, but he just wins.” Parido, also an outfielder, finished with a .348 average with nine RBIs. “He’s a hard-working kid who is just scratching the surface of his skills on the baseball diamond,” Swarr stated. “He started the year in

The Pioneers finally broke through in the fifth inning, albeit taking advantage of some free passes. Platt and Zuber worked a pair of walks and moved up on Raub’s sacrifice bunt. Gerard’s fielder’s choice ground out to second plated Platt with the first run of the game. BASEBALL Lampeter-Strasburg’s baseball team, the Section Two champs who finished the season with a 17-8 overall record, was well represented in the recent all-star balloting. The Pioneers had six first team all-stars and two second teamers. First Team all-stars included seniors Alex Knapp, Braedon Karpathios, Caleb Guyer and Jack Swarr along with junior Isaiah Parido and sophomore Peyton Harsh. Knapp played in the outfield and finished with a .358 batting average with 14 RBIs and 12 extra base hits. “Alex committed to George Mason in the Honors Program,” noted head coach Jeff Swarr. “He is a member of the National Honor Society. Throughout the season, Homefields also hosts events, such as its Talks in the Field program, annual Classic Golf Tournament, and Picnic in the Fields. The Talks in the Field program connects local experts to the community on a wide range of environmental and wellness topics, including landscape design, storm water management, foraging, yoga, and native plant gardening. Homefields’ 25th annual Classic Golf Tournament will take place on Friday, Sept. 24, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crosslands Pass, Millersville. Readers can find more information about this event at www.home fields.org/golf. The annual Picnic in the Fields event will occur on Sunday, Sept. 26, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the farm. “This organization is a beating heart for people who cannot stand alone and need other opportunities in life and in work,” stated Allison G. Hawthorne, vice president of the board of directors. “That’s what motivated us to brand ourselves as a care farm and what motivates me to provide opportunities where opportunities don’t exist. I’m here to give a hand.”

Homefields is interested in connecting with certified B corporations to launch its Fund a Farmer project. Fund a Farmer sponsors part-time farm hands with job coaching and other support needs.
