Night Around The World Held BY ANN MEAD ASH

n past years, the Garden Spot High School (GSHS) Coordinated School Health Council, an organization that provides fun, educational, and healthy activities for the district, held a yearly Night Around the World. In 2020, that event could not be held, but on May 19, 2021, the activity returned as a drive-through event at GSHS. International food items were prepared for about 200 attendees. Julie Groft, health council coordinator, said that the response was nearly overwhelming. “I am not sure how many cars we handed out food to - but we ran out super fast. We had a line of cars the first 45 minutes,” she reported. Groft said that the event was prepared so that when visitors arrived, they were welcomed and given a stress ball that resembled the world. From there, cars were driven through the parking lot along the school sidewalk perimeter to receive a map with stickers and a QR code card with

information about organizations around Lancaster County that provided food for the event and activities to complete. “All the (Garden Spot) foreign exchange students will be out here, and the German class will hand out pencils,” said Groft just prior to the event. She noted that music from around the world would play, and dancers from the Lancaster Liederkranz were scheduled to perform in a shaded area. Those who participated received a coloring book just before leaving. Flavors from around the world have always been a highlight of the event, and the 2021 drive-through featured foods from 10 countries. Foods that were given out included egg rolls representing China, Jamaican patties, macarons representing France, soft pretzels for Germany, shepherd’s pie for Ireland, and for Italy, stuffed shells, garlic knots, and pizzelles. Pennsylvania Dutch foods were represented by homemade whoopie pies. Karissa Davis, a nurse at the school, oversaw the production line of foods,

In addition, Cavod is now livestreaming classes from each studio. “You can attend a live virtual class from your home,” noted Dienner. “It’s very state of the art, so it looks like you’re right in the classroom.” Teachers will be on

Dienner said the event will feature free food, door prizes, face painting, a bounce house, a visit by local radio personalities who will broadcast live, and more. Free food options will include hot dogs, popcorn, and soda. Lickity Split will provide free ice cream cones for those who register for classes that day or who have already registered for the fall session, as well as ice cream treats for purchase. A special drawing will be held to win a free month’s tuition at Cavod for those who qualify. Regular performances will continue to be a highlight of the event. in in Philadelphia in 1976. After moving to the Lancaster County area, Wolfram partnered with Stoltzfus, and the pair practiced with a national chain at Park City. “I wanted a quieter setting and a road less traveled,” remembered Wolfram. In New Holland, the building where Howard Barr had practiced optometry years earlier became available, and the two doctors decided to make a move after about five years at Park City. “We opened cold out here as a 50/50 partnership,” said Wolfram. Jonathan recalled hearing stories of how Wolfram and Stoltzfus painted baseboards between patients the first week, but soon they became busier. “Within a couple years, we had a nice practice,” said Wolfram. Jonathan said that about a year ago, his dad set his sights on retiring at this time of year. “(My father) has been dwindling his schedule. He would see patients half the day. He felt the beginning of summer was a good date (to retire),” he said. Wolfram said the biggest changes he has seen in more than 40 years of practice have been in the area of technology and computerization in both equipment and health records. “It’s a lot to keep up with,” he said, adding that he enjoyed patient care more than doing charts and dealing with regulations. Jonathan said that taking over his father’s practice was something he had thought of since he was a child. “It was between that and dentistry,” he said, noting that he thinks optometry provides a fulfilling way to help patients without discomfort. He now practices with his wife, Dr. Kathryn Andrews, who specializes in treating children as well as adults, and Dr. Cindy Koza. More information about the practice may be found at www.optometricassociates.net.

Lancaster Snapshot is an online initiative designed to encourage Lancaster County residents to share photos of people, places, and things they hold dear. “We are deeply interested in connecting people across any number of demographics,” said Aaron Spangler, communications manager with the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF). “This idea was hatched in the midst of COVID-19 when we were literally and ideologically separated from each other,” he added, noting the project is focused on people introducing themselves by providing a snapshot as a way to a shared connection. “We wanted to tap into the humanness of each other,” said Tracy Cutler, executive vice president of LCCF. Those who wish to take part may visit www.lancastersnapshot.com, where they will be asked to submit answers to up to five questions using photographs. Spangler noted that participants may answer as few or as many questions as they wish. The questions are: Where do you live? What’s your favorite spot in Lancaster County? What’s one of your favorite things or possessions? What keeps you hopeful? What’s something you want to last forever? “The idea was to keep the questions open to get a varying degree of interpretation,” said Spangler, who noted there is space for a short caption. “There is no one way to answer these questions.” Participants will be able to visit the site, which includes a map of the county, to see their answers along with the answers of other participants. “You can zoom in (on a map) to see people’s entries,”

explained Spangler, who noted that place specificity was important to see not only faces, but where people are in the county and the community. Cutler explained that the program, which went live on June 11, will run for about 12 weeks. On a regular basis, LCCF will choose random participants to receive $500 to invest in a cause or project that is important to them. “It may be something they shared in their snapshot or something else they care about,” said Spangler. In the future, the organization hopes to make the site even more interactive so that participants can communicate directly with each other. Cutler explained that it is a mission of LCCF to help achieve goals that are on the hearts of the people in Lancaster County. “We are connecting and investing in things people care about so those things can continue in the long term,” she said, noting that the project encourages reflection on things that are really important to people. “Our role is coming alongside people to help support their passions,” she explained. Spangler noted that the project takes a different approach to fostering connection. “What’s unique about Snapshot is that we’re focusing on the

Red, white, and blue streamers were twisted across the ceiling of the Charles Ludwig Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 7632 at 755 Rancks Church Road, New Holland, on May 15. The smell of burgers cooking behind the building wafted through the open door and into the hall. At the counter, Alan and Sue Noll helped serve cake and cookies along with the burgers. Just inside the front door, tables of memorabilia were set up for visitors to peruse. Members and friends of the VFW had gathered to celebrate 75 years of service to the New Holland community. Recently elected post comman-

der Michael Martin welcomed the gathering of about 30 to the Charles H. Ludwig Post 7632 New Holland. He explained that the actual anniversary was earlier in the year, but COVID-19 restrictions postponed the celebration. In March, then post commander Norm Brower died, and the event was postponed to May. After leading the Pledge of Allegiance, Martin introduced Pennsylvania VFW commander Ron Peters, who called the anniversary “a great milestone.” He remembered Brower for his many years of service to the post. “We serve our country, but when we get out, we keep serving veterans and their families in our community,” he said before pre-

senting the Diamond Jubilee Award to the Charles Ludwig Post. “You should be very proud,” he concluded. Pennsylvania Sen. Ryan Aument lauded Brower as a pillar of the community, noting that

Heroes from pg 4 Brower was active with Garden Spot Fire Rescue as fire police captain. He also looked back on the history of the post, noting it was named for Pennsylvania native Charles Ludwig, a Marine who was killed in action in 1942. “It is after an American hero that this VFW post is named,” he said, adding that the post has a strong reputation for the highest quality of service. He expressed his thanks to those who had served and noted that as a VFW member he is excited about the future of the organization. U.S. Rep. Lloyd Smucker brought a certificate of recognition and a flag that had been flown over the United States Capitol in honor of the post. “Thank you to each of you. You are the true heroes among us,” he said, adding that the members had taken an oath to defend the Constitution and the freedoms Americans enjoy and noting that

Servant Stage has gathered more than 30 talented teen performers to create “Don’t Rock the Jukebox,” a high-energy show paying homage to pop music from a number of eras and styles. The musical extravaganza, designed to appeal to people of all ages, will be performed at venues in Lititz, Leola, New Holland, and Lancaster. On Friday, June 25, the show will be staged at 7 p.m. in Lititz Springs Park, 24 N. Broad St., Lititz. On Saturday, June 26, the performers will appear at 11 a.m. at the Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, and that same day at Lancaster County Christian School, 2390 New Holland Pike, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. On Sunday, June 27, the show will move to the New Holland Park, 498 E. Jackson St., New Holland, at 3 p.m. Wally Calderon, who serves as the Servant Stage artistic director said that he has loved working with this group of teens. “The energy and fun that they bring to each rehearsal has

May 15 was also Armed Forces Day. State Rep. Dave Zimmerman also noted Brower’s dedication to the community, and he pointed out the connections between the can-do attitude of agricultural communities, such as the ELANCO area, and the armed services. He presented the post with a citation that honored the history of the VFW throughout Pennsylvania. Tim Bender, mayor of New Holland, concluded the event. He thanked the organization for its continued service and especially noted his appreciation for Brower’s dedication to local organizations. Bender stated that the VFW’s support and service has a huge impact. “Veterans giving back to the community and taking care of their own is an incredible example to all of us and should be honored,” he said.

been unbelievable, and it shows in the stories they are telling through each song,” he said. Calderon added that because the youths are willing to work and grow as performers, he has been able to push and challenge them further. “And they have risen to each occasion,” he noted. Performer Elle Herson, age 14, said that she hopes audiences enjoy the enthusiasm she and other performers put into the show. “It’s fun to work with others who enjoy using the stage as an avenue to connect with other people,” she said. Servant Stage offers performances on a pay-what-you-will basis as part of the organization’s mission to make the arts accessible to all community members. To learn more about the organization or reserve tickets, readers may visit www.servantstage.org or call 717-455-0255.
