Collaboration

is hard at work in Elizabethtown, and it’s resulting in a better community.

United Churches Elizabethtown Area (UCEA) is a group of churches from different denominations and Christian beliefs that have come together with a common mission: to promote fellowship and cooperation among the churches while also providing programs to meet the physical, social and spiritual needs of people in Elizabethtown.

“ We are working together for the greater good,” said Derrick McDonald, president of UCEA.

UCEA formed in 1969, when local churches saw a need for quality, affordable child care in the community. “The ministers in town decided to get together and pray for the community to see how they could

work together,” McDonald stated. Their first project was the creation of the Elizabethtown Child Care Center. Although that organization now operates separately from UCEA, the two groups still partner on some projects, McDonald noted, and UCEA has expanded its reach as well. Among the initiatives organized by UCEA are Meals on W heels, which provides food to more than 50 senior citizens who cannot cook for themselves; the Clothing Barn, which serves more than 300 people annually; and Community Cupboard, which provides free food to approximately 200 people monthly.

In 2018, UCEA established Community Place on Washington, a social services complex that houses the group’s programs as well as Elizabethtown Community Housing and Outreach Services,

Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care and more. McDonald remarked that several other organizations, including GEARS and Jewel David Ministries, are in the process of coming to Community Place on Washington as well.

He noted that of the 31 churches in the greater Elizabethtown area, 17 are part of UCEA. “We are always looking for churches that have not participated in a while to come back or for churches that have never participated at all to join us,” he said, adding that volunteers are always welcome for the various UCEA ministries as well.

The success of UCEA has caught the attention of communities outside the region, McDonald commented, adding that the group has fielded calls from churches in New Jersey, Maryland, Connecticut and as far away as Tennessee. “They

want to know more about how it all works and wonder if they can bring it to their community,” he explained.

McDonald said UCEA recently had a celebration to thank program volunteers and honor the organization’s longevity. “We are a very unique organization, and our mission and how we go about our mission is unique,” he stated. “W e are all Christians, and we care about one another as a community. We have a shared vision. I’m just happy that all of these churches saw that if we’re all working together and we’re all teaming up, that’s the best way to better serve our community.”

For more information on UCEA, visit https://communityplace etown.org, email unitedchurches etown@gmail.com or call McDonald at 717-979-5601.

W hen Penn State Health Lancaster Medical Center opened its doors on Oct. 3, it fulfilled a goal of the organization. “Adding Lancaster Medical Center is another step toward delivering on our promise to ensure the communities we serve are within 10 minutes of our primary care providers, 20 minutes of our specialty care and 30 minutes of our acute care,” said Joseph Frank, hospital president, East Region for Penn State Health. The medical center is located near the intersection of State Road and Harrisburg Pike in East Hempfield Township.

The new hospital is an acute care facility, and it will offer both inpatient and outpatient care from its six-story, 341,000square-foot location that features 132 private patient beds. “Lancaster Medical Center will have inpatient services, including a

Since 1940, National Newspaper Week has been observed the first full week in October, so I thought it appropriate to share my thoughts on why supporting your local newspaper is more important than ever.

It’s a popular notion that the internet has marked the downfall of community newspapers. And, while many have stopped publishing due to tough economic times, the rising cost of newsprint, and other factors, your community newspapers can do something the internet can’t: We promote connections at a local level. Some say that because people can tweet, blog, surf, shop, and search online, no one reads newspapers anymore, but you just proved that to be a myth. Rather than being replaced by all the noise of “instant” media, your free local paper has become more important than ever. We are a part of your neighborhood. We shine a spotlight on people and organizations that make your town a better place to live, work, and play. No, they probably won’t get a million views on TikTok, but they are heroes who live down the street and are making a positive difference in our community.

In the past year the publisher of this newspaper, Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) has featured more than 1,500 front-page articles benefiting more than 1,000 local nonprofit organizations in Lancaster, Chester, Berks, York, and Dauphin counties. Those numbers don’t take into account the thousands of press releases that make their way into our papers each year.

With all the talk about social media, why do we continue to publish free community newspapers? It’s who we are and who we’ve been for nearly 70 years. We live here, too, and we want to keep our communities thriving as much as you do.

If you know of an organization or individual making a positive impact on your community, contact us at news@engleonline.com or visit https://townlively.com /event-submission to submit an event.

cardiac catheterization lab, cardiac surgery, general surgery, labor and delivery, and complete medical and surgical capabilities,” Frank noted. “It will offer outpatient services such as an Emergency Department, imaging services and physician offices.”

Unique features at the facility include a “hybrid operating room,” Frank said, explaining that this state-of-the-art design is an advanced procedural space that includes a traditional

operating room (OR) and medical imaging devices. “Having advanced imaging and surgical technologies available in the same space makes it easier on the patient,” he remarked. “Our teams will be able to give them a single visit to the hybrid OR as opposed to multiple procedures. It allows us to do more advanced interventions in the operating room.”

While Frank emphasized that the most important feature of Lancaster Medical Center is its

team of caregivers, he detailed design features that reflect the organization’s commitment to a healthy work environment. Departments and units are designed to promote staff collaboration and efficient workflow that reduces steps and provides quick access to supplies when minutes matter, he said. “A state-of-the-art café with indoor and outdoor seating provides healthy dining in a soothing atmosphere,” Frank shared. “Meditation areas, abundant windows with panoramic views, art and décor designs and the walking trail further promote wellbeing for staff and visitors.”

Construction on the hospital began in 2020. “Being able to design a hospital from scratch gives you many opportunities to incorporate design and technology into an exceptional patient experience,” Frank said. “We’ve planned so we are able to provide state-of-the-art technology for the community needs now and in the future as our community grows. We’ve engaged our physician partners in the technology

choices just as our nurses are engaged in designing our care. And we’ve added expanded consumer technologies like in-room digital patient education to not only provide the highest level of quality care, but also easy accessibility, comfort and convenience.”

Projected population growth was an important factor in choosing the site of the new medical center, he said. “We know that Lancaster County is growing, and along with population growth will come the need for more health care services,” he commented. “This location provides a comfortable and convenient access to Penn State Health care, especially for an aging population. It allows us to anticipate the city’s outgrowth and plan for our community of 10 years from now. And not just in age, but in many other measures of diversity. Understanding the changing face of our community has been a key driver for our decisions from staffing, to care design to locations.”

Sharing With Those Who Understand

Bill Terry, who founded the Lancaster County Veterans Breakfast Club, which meets on the third Saturday of each month, worked with Marc Spiridigliozzi and others to bring Todd DePastino, executive director of the Veterans Breakfast Club, from Pittsburgh to Woodcrest Villa for a special breakfast event on Sept. 17.

More than 70 area veterans gathered to hear from DePastino, see Blankets of Honor bestowed, and hear and tell their stories among others who understand. “We get Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, National Guard, Marines,” said DePastino, who briefly interviewed a Marine named Ed Moreau while waiting for breakfast to be served. Moreau relayed what it was like to be the lone Marine in a family of Navy veterans. “My Dad said, ‘I can forgive you because the Marine Corps is a department of the Navy,’” Moreau recalled. “I said, ‘That’s right, Dad; it’s the men’s department.’”

DePastino also spoke to Sara Hodgkiss, who transf ormed her family’s farm into an official nonprofit equine-assisted therapy organization for veterans and people with disabilities called Woerth It Hollow. Hodgkiss told DePastino about her six years of service as a human resources information management specialist for 3,500 to 4,500 soldiers at a time.

Terry was interviewed about his unusual service as a

Navy diving medical technician, who dove wearing suits of 180 to 300 pounds. Terry explained how he was trained to place IVs and perform minor surgery.

The first Blanket of Honor recipient at the breakfast was Spiridigliozzi. DePastino asked Spiridigliozzi about his time in the Army in Vietnam.

“I was a light weapons infantry man,” said Spiridigliozzi, who took part in about 26 combat assaults with a Huey helicopter, which he called the “Calvary’s horse in Vietnam.”

Manny Acuna with Blankets of Honor presented Spiridigliozzi with a blanket, wrapping it around the veteran’s shoulders and saying, “ We are here for you.” Joined by Terry and DePastino, the group offered prayer, with Acuna noting, “For your service, you shall not be forgotten. We thank you for your sacrifices.”

Blankets of Honor are given to Gold Star family members and other supporters of veterans. Acuna brought a supporter blanket to present to DePastino. “It represents the people who guard the freedom while we are away,” he explained. “We thank you for being here, Todd,” he added.

DePastino, who is not a veteran, explained his calling to be a supporter, saying, “I love being a part of the veteran community. This community is special. The camaraderie is intense, and I am an honorary part of the group.”

In addition to live Veterans Breakfast Club meetings, DePastino holds weekly virtual meetings at www.veteransbreakfastclub.org, and he produces a free quarterly magazine for veterans called “VBC Magazine.”

The Veterans Breakfast Club generally meets at the Bird-in-Hand Family Restaurant and Smorgasbord, 2760

Old Philadelphia Pike, Birdin-Hand, beginning at 7 a.m. Breakfasts are free for veterans and spouses. To reserve a space, call 717-929-0310.

Condron Scores Four in Win Over Cedar Crest

The E-town field hockey team may not be living in a Charles Dickens novel, but their last two games had them experience the best of times and the worst of times none the less.

The best of times came on September 22nd with a 5-0 romp over Cedar Crest. Sydney Pope needed just two saves to earn her third

shutout of the season. Mikaela Condran did the heavy lifting with four goals, three coming in the opening frame. Reagan Flory, who helped start that run by assisting on Condran’s first goal, finished the scoring with an unassisted goal in the fourth.

Elizabethtown found themselves on the opposite side of things on the 26th, falling to Manheim Central by a 4-1 count. Pope faced a barrage of

shots and finished with 19 saves while Lyla Fair broke up the shutout by converting a Condran pass for a fourth quarter score

GIRLS’ TENNIS

The girls’ tennis team hit a rough patch with losses to Conestoga Valley and Manheim Central dropping the Lady Bears into third place in Section Two. E-town split up the two losses with a 7-0 win over Solanco on the 23rd but the 5-2 loss to CV and the 6-1 setback to Central still stung. Dasha Gencturk picked up the lone win against Central on the 26th and accounted for one of the two wins opposite CV on the 21st. Julia Laszakovits and Rebecca Mink posted the second team point again Conestoga Valley.

BOYS’ SOCCER

The boys’ soccer team kept themselves at the top of the L-L, moving to 9-2-1 with wins over Garden Spot and Ephrata running the Bears streak to eight straight games.

Head coach James Sostack pointed out keys to the 3-0 win over Spot, saying, “Executing set piece opportunities and solid defense played a major role in securing the victory.”

Four Tyler Bell saves gave the senior keeper his fourth straight shutout while goals from Jason Stark and Xavier Giron provided the necessary cushion. Stark used a Tavon Schoenberger feed for a 1-0 lead before going solo to finish the scoring in the 50th minute. In between it was Emery Morgan setting up Giron’s score.

The Bears were able to avenge one of their two losses on the 27th, slipping by Ephrata 1-0. Stark provided the setup for Hayden Flory’s goal in the 15th minute while five Bell saves secured the payback win.

GOLF

The golf team made their way to Fairview Golf Course in Lebanon on

the 26th to take part in the Lancaster-Lebanon League Championship. The result was an eighth-place team finish with all four scorers missing the cut for districts. Aidan Blyler, with his round of 84, was just four shots over the line. Dylan Parise (85), Jared Louie (88) and Ryan Findley (89) rounded out the top four.

CROSS COUNTRY

The cross-country teams traveled to Carlisle on the 24th to take part in the Carlisle Invitational. The boys saw all five of their runners place inside the top 100 leading to a 10th place team finish while the Lady Bears put four runners inside the top 100 to finish 15th.

Jordan DiRisio enjoyed the top E-town finish, covering her 3.1 miles in 19:38.40, good enough for 24th place. Ali Fink was the next Lady Bear to finish, doing so in 78th place while Lilah Drager crossed the line in 91st place. Jillian Wivell closed out the top 100 with a time of 21:19.40. Kendall Hein was the final scorer and finished in 136th place.

Jaycen Conrad led the boy’s push with a 45th place time of 16:43.8 while Nicholas Mascia was next with a 67th place finish. E-town’s final three scorers all crossed within five seconds of each other led by Jack Myers (80th, 17:15.5), Jackson Kay (86th) and Bradley Kreider (88th).

The Bears returned to L-L action on the 27th where the Lady Bears topped both Cocalico and Lampeter-Strasburg while the boy’s managed a split with a win over Cocalico offsetting a loss to the Pioneers. DiRisio, Fink and Drager went 1-2-3 on the girl’s side while Conrad, Checco and Mascia finished 4th, 5th, and 6th on the boy’s side.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

The girls’ soccer team has just two losses on the 2022 season, both

coming to Ephrata with the most recent taking place on the 27th. The Lady Mountaineers posted another 2-1 victory, pushing E-town two games back in the Section Two standings. Meiley Shuck used a Liana Endy feed in the 60th minute to bust up the shutout but Ephrata was able to hang on for the 2-1 win. Keegan Miller finished with five saves.

The second 2-1 loss to Ephrata also broke up the Lady Bears six game winning streak that was capped with a 2-1 win over Garden Spot on the 21st. Miller secured the win with 11 saves while Lily Heistand took care of the offense. The senior netted two scores, one with help from Dani Bruno.

VOLLEYBALL

The girls’ volleyball team added two more wins to their season tally by topping Garden Spot and Cocalico while slipping in another secondplace finish at a tournament, this time at Cumberland Valley’s ‘Rally in the Valley.’

The Lady Bears posted a 6-2 mark in pool play on the 24th, sweeping Spring Grove and Altoona while splitting with Musselman and Clarion. That slotted E-town in the quarterfinal opposite the host squad with the Lady Bears winning and setting up a semifinal match with Central Dauphin. A win there put Etown in the final against Northern Allegany with the Lady Tigers collecting gold with a 25-19 victory.

September 22nd saw the Lady Bears knock off Garden Spot, posting wins of 25-20, 25-18 and 25-15 to collect their first 3-1 win of the season.

Hailey Oller finished with 39 assists while Liz Kerin had 16 kills. Chloe Merkt added 12 kills to her 12 digs while Paige Horst posted 25 digs.

Elizabethtown got back to their sweeping ways on the 27th, topping

Cocalico 25-8, 25-15 and 25-5. Oller (24 assists), Merkt (eight kills) and Bella Lutter (seven kills) paced the offense while Horst (13 digs) paced the defense.

FOOTBALL

It is a good thing they never ask by how many, just if you won because the E-town football team narrowly won their September 23rd showdown with Twin Valley. The Bears needed two fourth quarter scores coupled with a two-point conversion to slip out of Elverson with a 47-42 win.

Logan Lentz, who finished with 146 yards and four touchdowns, claimed one of those two scores while Cade Capello claimed the other and accounted for the twopoint conversion on his way to a 76 yard, two score night. Braden Cummings (five catches, 226 yards) and Brady Breault (two catches, 54 yards) accounted for most of Josh Rudy’s 287 passing yards.

How To Maintain An Older Vehicle

New cars have been costly for quite some time, but those costs have spiked considerably since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. That unprecedented rise may lead many motorists to wonder how they can get more mileage out of their existing vehicles. According to data from Kelley Blue Book and Cox Automotive, the average cost of a new car in September 2021 was just over $45,000. That marked a $3,000 increase from June 2021 and a $5,000 increase from the end of 2020.

Drivers who may not be able to afford the cost of a new vehicle can take the following steps to keep their existing cars running smoothly for years to come.

- Take care of the timing belt. Engines may get all the glory, but they cannot run smoothly without a fully functional timing belt, which helps to synchronize movements of various components. Owner’s manuals may note when to replace the timing belt, but they generally must

be replaced every 60,000 to 105,000 miles. Although replacement is required infrequently, drivers can ask their mechanics to keep an eye on their timing belts. During the early months of the pandemic, many people learned that infrequent driving can cause a timing belt to fail before it reaches the projected mile marker. Aging drivers should keep this fact in mind if they do not drive as much as they used to.

- Take care of the brakes and associated components. The experts at Popular Mechanics urge drivers of older vehicles to replace their brake fluid every two years. Popular Mechanics also advises drivers whose cars are more than seven years old to replace the rubber brake lines when major brake work is required.

- Pay attention to oil levels. The older engines get, the more oil they burn. For this reason, owners of older vehicles should check their oil levels more often than they would if their vehicles were brand new. These

checks also provide a way to discover leaks before they lead to potentially significant issues.

- Don’t skip maintenance appointments. Even if you’re still driving less due to the pandemic, it’s best to keep up with maintenance on any car, especially if the car is older. Routine tune-ups and oil changes, which may need to become more frequent the older the vehicle gets, can keep cars running smoothly and protect the engine over the long haul.

The rising cost of new cars may compel people to keep their cars longer than they might have anticipated. A few simple maintenance measures may help to prolong the life of a vehicle.

Addressing Headlight Glare

Headlight glare becomes dangerous when visibility is impaired to a point where the risk of accidents is heightened. Glare is a growing problem for many modern drivers due to the increased use of light emitting diodes in headlights.

Driving at night is challenging because pedestrians, cars and other obstacles are difficult to see once the sun sets, and headlight glare can cause further problems. A study from the U.S. Department of Transportation found that 88% of drivers noticed LED and HID headlight glare. While LED lights may not actually be brighter, their “cool” color temperature can make them appear so. Studies have found that blue and white light tends to hit people’s eyes harder, especially at night.

In addition, human eyes do not adjust to changes in lighting very quickly, according to Pierre Paul Driving School in New York City. The older a person gets, the longer his or her eyes take to adjust to changes in lighting. In fact, it can take up to seven seconds to recover from the blinding glare of headlights. That’s enough time to swerve off the road or potentially hit something. While glare can be problematic, drivers can take steps to make nighttime driving safer.

- Clean the windshield. Dirt and grime found on the windshield can refract light and make glare worse. Therefore, clean all windows and mirrors thoroughly, inside and out.Repair scratches and cracks. Glare can be exacerbated by any imperfections in the windshield. Repair cracks or scratches promptly.

- Get a vision and health check. Changes to vision can impact how glare affects certain individuals. Vitamin A deficiency can cause night blindness, also known as nyctalopia. Eye shape changes, including a condition called keratoconus, can affect vision. Cataracts and diabetes can also impair vision. Visit a primary care physician as well as an eye doctor to check for conditions that can make night vision worse.

- Change your line of sight. Do not look directly into oncoming headlights. Rather, look slightly down and to the right side of the road so that you are not focusing on the beams.

- Get glare-resistant coatings on eyeglasses. Speak with an optician about eyeglasses with a coating that can reduce the amount of glare. VisionCenters.com says standard plastic lenses reflect around 8% of the light that reaches glasses, while high-index lenses reflect up to 12% of available light. Anti-glare coating allows 99.5% of available light to reach the eyes, essentially eliminating glare. Those who don’t wear eyeglasses can purchase special anti-glare glasses to wear in high-glare conditions, such as

when looking at computer and phone screens.

- Flip your rearview mirror to night mode, if you have this option. This setting will make it appear as though

lights coming from behind are dimmer.

- Take breaks. When glare makes driving difficult, take a break to help your eyes recover.

These are some of the steps people may take when glare becomes problematic while driving at night.

Tax Credits Available To Farmers

A statewide program is offering $13 million in tax credits to help Pennsylvania farmers install conservation practices that can improve long-term viability, keep soil on the land, and reduce pollution flowing into local rivers and streams. Tax credits through the Resource Enhancement and Protection Program (REAP) program offset 50% to 75% of the costs of no-till planting and precision agriculture equipment, cover crops, forested streamside buffers, barnyard improvements, waste storage facilities, conservation plans, nutrient management plans, and other practices.

Chesapeake Bay Foundation

(CBF) started and led a diverse coalition that advocated for the creation of REAP in 2007. It was amended in 2019 as part of the Pennsylvania Farm Bill, and REAP has received funding increases in the years since. According to the State Conservation Commission, REAP tax credits have been used on over 3,000 farming operations across the commonwealth since 2007.

To learn more about the Pennsylvania Farm Bill and to apply for the first-come, first-served REAP program, visit www.agriculture.pa.gov; information about REAP is available by clicking on State Conservation Commission under Plants, Land & Water.

Breakfast Will Benefit Historical Society

The Maytown Historical Society recently opened its museum to the public after having been closed since 2020, and now the organization could use your support.

The group will host a fall breakfast and bake sale to benefit the operation and restoration of the museum. It will be held on Saturday, Oct. 8, from 7:30 to 10 a.m. in the backyard of the museum, 4 W. High St., Maytown.

As historical society president Skip Nell explained, the organization held a breakfast for a number of years indoors at a local church, but for the first breakfast since reopening after COVID, the group decided to host it at the museum. The menu will feature scrambled eggs, sausage, pancakes, fruit cups, juice and coffee.

A bake sale will also be held, spotlighting items made by historical society members. “The bake sale will have a fall theme,” Nell said. “We’ll have apple pies, pumpkin pies, pumpkin whoopies and things like that.” He noted

that people can drop by to purchase bake sale items without attending the breakfast or can buy bake sale items to go after breakfast.

The Maytown Historical Society exists to protect and preserve the history of the town, Nell stated. The building it’s housed in dates to the 1760s. “We’re looking at creating an area for archiving and storage of items we receive from society members and the community,” he remarked, adding that the

area will most likely be located off-site since the society’s goal is to restore the museum’s interior to be period authentic.

The museum will be open during the breakfast for people to peruse the collection of items, including the current exhibit of coverlets.

Advance ticket purchase is requested for the breakfast. Tickets may be purchased by calling Skip Nell at 717-4263254 or Jane Garber at 717940-0037.

“Sleepy Hollow” Will Return To Rock Ford

The Theater of the Seventh Sister (TSS) will present a production of “Sleepy Hollow” at the Historic Rock Ford and Theater, with opening night taking place on Thursday, Oct. 13. Two productions will be held on each Thursday and Friday at 7 and 8:30 p.m., and the final performance will be on Friday, Nov. 4.

The play will be performed on the first floor of the Hand Mansion, which will be altered to portray the Van Tassel family home in Washington Irving’s famous tale. Audience members will follow characters such as Ichabod Crane, Brom Bones and Katrina Van Tassel through each room of the mansion as the story is told. “We have a dream cast this year; everyone who is portraying their roles are very fine actors that are physically and vocally suited

to their roles,” said Cynthia Charles, artistic and managing director of TSS.

Charles became the artistic and managing director for TSS in 2014 and has assisted with several productions such as “Julius Caesar,” “Tales From the Caretakers” and “Emma the Matchmaker.” Prior to her role with the organization,
