Dear Editor: I have 'been rece1Y1t1i; yOI.U' publieation tor about a year nov. I _s very plened with it Wltll I read the Robert RodriqueJ; review ot Frankie Arastrong's Bay record in VolUlle 3, lfullber 1, Winter Mr . RodriqueJ; erroDeOUsl1' credits Holl,y Tannen with the dulcimer backup on th1s albwl . Holly did a greet deal of excellent backup work on Frankie ' s 1973 U. S . tour, aDd appears on a Living Folk record aDd on several tolk festival. records aCCOlDpanying Frlll:lkle. I . . indebted to Holly t or teach.ins me a lot about the dulcimer, and about British and American traditional music in general. However, if Mr. Rodriquez would eare to consult the notes of the Bay record, he will t1nd that Sude Rothtield is c r edited vith the dulcimer playing. (The same Susie Rothfield plays dulcimer on Frankle ' s second Topic record, "Songs and Ballads".) I suggest that he persue the notes of the records he chooses to revlew a little more earefully in the tuture, as I belleve in g1vin8 credlt vhere credit is due. Thank you, Susan Rothtield 133 Lake Street S . l' . , Callt. ~1l8 (Ed. . Iote: Sorry tor the error Susan - ve too 'believe in giving credit where it is due . )

GREEN RIVER DULCIMER KI'l'S

A D. P. N. DULCD<IER KIT REVIEW At> promised, we are slowly bringing to the O. P. N. pages some review. of the various dulc:1!IIer kits available around the country , This issue vU.l f eature the dulcimer ldt available from Green River Dulcimers of Elkhor n . Kentucky.

To begin with , this dulcimer is pretty easy to put together because of the tact that the s ides are flu-eady bent (hourglass shape ) and the loWldboard 111 glued onto them (Boundholes are cut also - hearts) . Another big plus vitb tbb Idt is that the f'retboard already haa all. the slots cut and ready to r eceive the floet vire. The head s t ock 18 also already pNl-shaped and dr1ll.ed to r eceive the grover friction pegs which come vith the instrument. After thia inatruaaent is together an easy task with the great instruction sheet that COllIeS with it - only a 1D1n1m1.m o f sanding and f1nishlna I s required. The kit I bu1lt va. all made o f walnut which was in solid pieces except t or the toP. sides , and bottom which was an i nter esting (and. very tonaly pleasing) lJuzd.nate consisting of so11d. layers of walnut whi ch wer e thin. 11ght, and. very flexible . Simple tools found in IDOst handy hoaIes &re sufficient to COIIIplete this Idt . You will need., for e lt&lllple , a hal!mer . ruler. coping s aw, _sk1ng tape , brads . glue, sandpaper, screw driver, rubber bands, tile, steel wool, straight edge , etc. The Idt is r eally easy to build. and finishes up into a tine dulc1lller which will give you man;y vears o f fine service. For a brochure on the olC\ kits write: Green Rive r Dulcimers, Ellthorn . Kentucky 42733 - phone (505) 465- 3274

On August 15. 1975 approximately 100 people gathered on 'the Washington Coast to explore modes and dulcimene. Your instrument was your admissio n to if weekend of yoursel f. This was the beglnnmg of a concept for an annual kindred gathering that each year moved to a d,f· ferent setting. The second was held at 8500 feet in the Northeast Colorado Rockies and the third wilt be held in Northern Californ ia. Th is is " The Pacific Rim Kindred Gathering". The artists on this album have been and will be hosts to many gatherings to come .

There has never been a dulcimer album with the scope and intri· cacy of this project. Included are 19 songs; traditional Swedish, Irish , English . French ·Canad ian and American songs, a medieval parade, original tunes by the artists. and one all-out dulcimer rock song . If you are at all interested in dulcimer, you undoubt edly have spent time with at least one of the books written by these dulcimer masters, or even one of their dulcimers. Listening to " PACIFIC RIM DULCIMER PROJECT," you w ill be inspired by the art istry of ROBERT FORCE and ALBERT d ' OSSCH( co·authors of "In Search of the Wild Oulcimer"; NEAL HE LLMAN, author of "Li fe Is Like A Mountain DulCimer". "The Dul · cimer Songbook," and " The Richard Farina Dulcimer Book "; MICHAEL RUGG. co·founder of "Capri.Taurus Dulcimers"; BONNIE CAROL, builder of some of the f inest dulcimers in the Rockies; and MICHAEL HUBBERT, a dulcimer builder with skill on many d i fferent instruments. " PACIFIC RIM DULCIMER PROJECT" will certainty prove to be one of the most important albums in your collect ion of music.

Dear Phfl. In connection with teaching so. elMefltary IIlslc theory to an Intermediate dulct.r class, I hive dlscover~ th«t lQ.IIy well·klM)Wfl boou contalnlng tunH for dulcf .. rs In conventional WoIslc.ll nouHon contain errors of efther key signature or .:Ide . altnough the ublature Is usuilly okay . In ftet. In one of the .ost recentl y published du lcl~ r books. the key slgnalure of every tune not In the Ionian mode Is In error , as anyone trying to play by the ~slc Instead of the ublature would quickly diSCOVer. Every author occasionally gets Into trouble when he or she leaves the "white keyS" and attempts to p1tch lIOdal tunes I nto keys con tain i ng sharps or flits. The typical duld lltr player also runs Into difficulty In trying to dete,..lne the .ode of a tune In a source not written for dulcllll!r, such as a hJWnal, unless I t Is clelrly In the Ionian lUjor or Aeolian .!nor .ode. I have prl!?lr~ a -Mode finder - ub1e by which the lOde of any tune written In conventional IIlslc notation un be dete"'ln~ Instantly . For authors scoring WoIslc of known .ades, the proper key signature for any given key or pitch can also be found Just as easOy . USers of the table will also discover other revelations bet~en teey. key signature, and .,de. Whtle the tabl e 'IIOrts for any tune In which the key can be dete", ' n~, the secret that ~kes It so easy to use Is the fact that nearly every tune eVer wri tten ends on Its key note. I have found one or two exceptions, but their keys became obvious upon playing the melody on I plano as written. Use of the table Is self· explanatory.

There Is another Interesti ng considera ti on . Sa. tunes can be played In MOre thin on • .:Ide because the note which is different between I'IOdes is not con· tlln~ In the tune . For ell'lIp le, -John Hardy· c.n be played In either Ionian or "Ixolydl.n. because the seventh, whfch differs betw.en the .odes , fs never pl.yed In the tune . S1.0,rly, sa.e tunes un be p1eyed in ef ther Aeolf.n or Dortan (e . g., · Shady Grove- which Is even okay fn "fxolydian), aga1n because the notes differentiating the lIOdes do not appear In the tunH. SoInetf. s , the -wrong· I'IOde sounds better than the -right· one beceuse of more Interesting hennonlc relationships . Because of the widespre.d errors whi ch use of this table can avoid In the future, I have taken t he trouble to copyr igh t H. I have also developed severel other vertlons of this chart fn MOre t echnical, theoretl c.l form, which offer inter· estlng Insight tnto meSal/key relatlonshtps, if .nyone Is Interested , but this one 15 e.slest to use . NOTES ON A PERSOJiAL COLIECTION OF DULCIMERS AND DULCIMER- TYPE INSTRIJ.IE1fI'S by Mitzie Collins, Rochester, N. Y. When I first heard a

dulcimer, played by Howie Mitchell at the Fox 1968 ~ I was seized with an overwhelming i=pulse to own and play such an ins trument . I really had no other plan than to be able to au that kind of happy and compeillng mu s i c . Some yean later, I fi nd I not only I118ke IllUlic on t he ha.aJlered dulciJ:ler, but I &lso have been s tricken by the "disease~ of collecting dulcimers and r elated instruments fo r no other reason than sheer fas cination.

Hollov Folk Festival during the .umme r of

My first humered du.lebler vas pu-chased in t he Slllllller of 1970 troc Dennh Oorcgi of Brocton, Hew York. He had Just lIIIlde a lIIOuntain dulc1l!ler f o r lie , and when I asked hi= i t he would build lie a he_r ed dulcble r, he agreed "ying he had restored and r epaired leveral tor historical hoae l and societiel , but hadn ' t yet actually made one rr~ acratch. I becue the proud p:laeS50 r of Dorogi Ha!!mered Dulcimer 11 . Dorog! lIlOd.eled the instrumet\t after an old dulciJ:ler he had bought in a local antique and junk shop. Even though Chautauqua County, where Brocton is located, va. the h~ ot several nineteenth centur y dulcimer builder., Oorogi belleves tnts dulcimer was trom We s tern MiChigan and dates from the last halt ot the nineteent h century. My dulcimer hal tvelve treble courses ot f our .trings each, and eleven bas a courses ot two stri ngs each. This instrument has a particularly brilliant sound, due in part to the fa ct that it i s not braced internally as heavily al IDIlny dulcime r s . o r, a s Dennil has told me, as t he later ones he has built.
