STRAND: SCHOLAR (14) ABDUCTED

Teen’s rape ordeal NIKITA SYLVESTER

A

14-year-old girl was allegedly abducted and raped by three boys while on her way to school about two months ago. Last week the girl’s father rushed her to hospital after she attempted to commit suicide. The family had just moved to the Strand from Saldanha Bay two weeks before the incident happened. The father relayed the horrific story as told to him by his daughter. He said that while walking to school one morning, just before she reached the school gate, his daughter was confronted by three boys believed to be from a nearby high school. The boys dragged her to Kay’s Caravan Park in Strand where she was allegedly raped. “At about 10:00 that morning, I received a phone call from the school enquiring why my daughter was not at school. I then realised she must be missing. We began searching for her, I walked through all the nearby streets until I eventually saw her coming up the road.” At first she did not tell her father of the incident, because the boys had threatened to kill her parents if she did. Once they reached the girl’s school she began talking about what happened. She told him how the three boys held her down, shoved something into her mouth and then repeatedly raped her. “They must have slapped and scratched her because she had cuts and bruises all over her body. “We are still awaiting DNA results which will determine whether there was more than one culprit.” The girl told her father how she managed to escape through a window in the caravan after the boys had left her alone for a while. Unfamiliar with her surroundings she was forced to ask a passing motorist for a lift back to the school.

“We immediately notified the police and one of the three boys was apprehended in the early hours of the following morning at Kay’s Caravan Park.” The boy was subsequently released until his next court appearance. He added that about a week after the incident, his daughter pointed out the boy who raped her. The 18-year-old, who at the time was attending a high school in Strand, was once again seen standing outside the school gate where he abducted her. The father then decided to remove his daughter from the school and enrol her at a private school. The father said with all the trauma, his daughter continues to go for counselling and receive the necessary medication. “Something like this turns your whole life upside down. It’s total hell, but for our daughter’s sake we cope and do everything we can to assist her.” Both principals have confirmed that they are aware of the incident but cannot comment due to the current police investigation. Strand police spokesperson Const. Mbulelo Mafuna confirmed that a suspect has made his first appearance at the Strand Magistrate’s Court on 28 September and will appear again on Tuesday 11 December. The father has begun a petition among the parents in the area in an attempt to prevent the suspect from being released on bail. Ada Buys of PATCH, a centre for abused children, describes the effects an incident like this can have: . Being abducted causes a lot of trauma. The sense of feeling safe can disappear completely. . The court cases that go along with these inci dents cause a lot of anxiety. . There is a huge sense of shame and mis placed blame, “why me?” . It is of vital importance that the person seeks help and speaks about the trauma as it may lead to thoughts of suicide.

MAGICAL SUMMER SUNSET: As the summer season slowly approaches, residents and holidaymakers can enjoy fun in the sun on the Helderberg’s beaches. Whether it be a sunrise swim, building sand castles with the kids or long sunset walks with your special someone, this summer will surely be one to remember. The weather forecast predicted for this weekend is sunshine with a few stray clouds. Friday: 21 ºC fair, Sat urday: 15 ºC partly cloudy, Sunday: 17 ºC fair. PHOTO: PETER BEE

Business as usual at Ooskus fisheries JAMEY THOMAS Ooskus Fisheries in Gordon’s Bay is once again operating from their original premises. On Sunday 19 August former Springbok rugby player Earl Rose and his wife Amor crashed their BMW into the store. The impact wrecked not only their car but also the entire facade of the store. The incident took place after 03:00 on the corner of Faure Marine Drive and Sir Lowry’s Pass Road. The damage to the building alone was estimated at R160 000, while the expenses to replace the damaged equipment amounted to around R120 000. As a result of the accident, business continued from a rented neighbouring house until all construction work was completed. Raymond Goldberg, owner of Ooskus Fisheries, says the store was officially opened on Friday 19 October and although the completion of repairs took longer than expected, things are looking up. “It was a very difficult time for everyone here at the fisheries and we are relieved that

Ooskus Fisheries owner Raymond Goldberg proud of his newly renovated store. everything has settled and it’s business as per usual. Most of all, business is picking up very nicely since the incident,” said Goldberg, who is looking forward to the busy festive season.

Sergeant’s case postponed again The case of Ross Sergeant (33) had been postponed to 21 February 2013. His case was heard in the Wynberg regional court on Tuesday last week. Sergeant was the driver of the Mercedes Benz involved in the accident on the N2 on Youth Day 2011. Strand dancer Courtney Moore (18) and Somerset West resident Estelle Brigando (50), the driver of the Toyota

Yaris with which Ross collided, died on the scene. Brigando’s two daughters who were also in the car sustained minor injuries. Sergeant has been charged with culpable homicide, reckless and negligent driving; failing to stop at the scene of an accident to assess the nature of the victim’s injuries and failing to report an accident.

STUCK IN A HOLE: Residents in Beachcomber Street, Gordon’s Bay bore wit ness to a fire truck being stuck in a sink hole this past Sunday. According to resident Tania Swart, the fire department was called to attend a small veld fire. “The fire was extinguished, but before leaving, they noticed the truck’s front right side had fallen into the sink hole,” she said. A recovery vehicle was called to the scene to pull the fire truck out. The truck sustained minimal damage. The officers then had to wait for City of Cape Town officials who needed to assess the situation. “When the municipality arrived, they did a quick survey, and put a drum in the road to close the hole to warn other drivers of the damage to the road.” Tania says according to the municipality, the hole was possibly caused by soil erosion due to a leakage from a sewage pipe. NEWS SUMMARY The bees which plagued Gordon’s Bay residents, are finally a thing of the past. On a number of occasions the DistrictMail reported on children being attacked by bees. These bees were kept in two cement reservoirs near the mountain. According to Kylie Hatton, manager of the City of Cape Town’s media office, the bee hives were removed by a local beekeeper on 9 and 10 November without any hiccups. - page 6. The well-known Farmhouse Coffee Shop in Somerset West has recently been restored and is open for business. This follows after a destructive fire broke out at the restaurant in the Trading Post shopping centre. The fire was caused by an electrical short. The damage to the shop was so extensive that it had to be completely renovated. According to shop owner Christo Franken, the new look cost them between R500 000 and R600 000. The coffee shop will now also be open for business during the evening. - page 10

Bye teen berg nie meer ‘n probleem

Lourensford farm workers returned to work last Friday while wage negotiations are under way.

PHOTO: NICOLE MCCAIN

Waiting for the wage deadline NIKITA SYLVESTER AND NICOLE MCCAIN Peace and quiet at Lourensford Wine Estate appears to have been restored as farm workers resume their posts while awaiting feedback. After the riotous behaviour at the Somerset West farm last week, protesters have relinquished strike action while the Employment Condition Commission negotiates their minimum wages. The decision will be announced on Monday 4 December. Paul Mokwana, spokesperson for the Lourensford farmworkers, said since the protests they’ve noticed numerous police and security officers patrolling the farms on a regular basis. “We all returned to work last Fri-

day, but if we are not happy with the outcome, we will strike again,” said Mokwana, adding that they are no longer demanding R250 a day but will settle for R150. Lourensford CEO, Phillip du Plessis, says employees earning R70 are “on the lower end of the scale and there is a large percentage of workers who earn more.” Farm workers receive one of the lowest minimum wages in any sector in the country, says Brigit Schwarz, spokesperson for Human Right Watch. Despite Cosatu rejecting an offer from farmers of R80 per day, Mokwana confirms that amount to be his daily wage. With his monthly remuneration totalling about R1 500, he provided DistrictMail with an estimated break down of his essential monthly expenditures:

Rent: R250 Groceries: R400 School fees for two children: R100 (R1 200 per year) Transport: R200 Mokwana explained that with the festive season around the corner, he will have to fork out even more money to buy clothes for his children as well as food and other extras for the house, which he said could add up to more than R1 000. “I have nothing left at the end of the month. The money is not enough to live on.” Mokwana said he recently heard rumours that some of the workers will have to be retrenched due to the wage increase. “We are al very worried about that. Some farm workers have been working here for years, they have children, they don't deserve this, but we will wait and see what happens next week.”

ALL DRESSED UP: The Somerset West police recently hosted its annual high tea at the Ongegund Lodge. The hatters tea party was in aid of threeyearold cancer patient Danicka Dirks, whose mother is an employee of the Somerset West police station. Major General Sharon Jephta, Deputy Provincial Commissioner, also attended the event as a special guest.

Carols by candlelight The SA Navy Band and Naval College of Gordon’s Bay will hold their Carols by Candlelight on Wednesday 28 November. The event starts at 18:30 at the Naval College in Gordon’s Bay. The Gordon’s Bay Lions Club implores the public to donate a can of food, which club members will collect at the entrance. All tins collected will be used for food hampers for the needy. Phone Paula Lang on 082 896 8913.

Stench, flies of canal are ‘unbearable’ NIKITA SYLVESTER Gordon’s Bay resident, Carla Vellenga says she can no longer bear the stench and flies that regularly engulf her home in Country Mews. Vellenga explains that she has been battling for months to have the stormwater canal, which flows directly behind her house, cleaned and maintained. “It looks and smells absolutely horrid. Everyone just throws their rubbish in the canal or even uses it as a toilet. On garbage day there are people who scratch through the bins and whatever they don’t want they dump in there,” said Vellenga. She explained that her kitchen is right on the bank of the canal which makes it unpleasant for them to cook or eat. “Especially on hot days it has a terribly rotten smell that brings lots of flies into our house,” said Vellenga. Earlier this year she succeeded in persuading the municipality to clean the canal and remove all the rubbish. “They had to use a front loader to get everything out. Truck loads of rubbish were taken away, but about a month later the canal looked as though it had never been cleaned.” For the last three months Vellenga has been in contact with her ward councillor, with the City of Cape

Town’s transport, roads and stormwater department, but to date nothing has been done. “If they could even just put up ‘no dumping’ signs or place a few bins around the canal, I’m sure it might help,” she said. According to Brett Herron, the City’s Mayco member for transport, roads and stormwater, the City is aware of the problem and is attending to it. Herron said that although further investigations into the source of the problem are under way, it is, however, suspected that the primary cause is stormwater ingress and litter. “The City’s roads and stormwater department will increase their efforts on the open channels in an attempt to remove litter and other debris entering the system,” explained Herron. However, the surrounding communities also need to assist the City in preventing water pollution by ensuring that they correctly dispose of washing water, sewage effluents and solid waste into the systems provided by the City. Herron also encourages communities to report sewage overflows and other faults for rectification. “Smells often increase during the summer months as bacteria multiply due to increased temperatures. There are no health implications with regard to this canal, provided that direct contact with the water is avoided,” said Herron.

Gordon’s Bay resident Carla Vellenga looks on with disgust at the canal flowing behind her house.

Rubbish is dumped in the canal on a regular basis.

Sunset concerts start this Sunday One really knows that summer has finally arrived when you can walk on the beach after eight in the evening and it is still light (see Peter Bee’s photo on the front page). Another sign that our favourite time of the year is here is the start of the summer sunset concerts at the Helderberg Nature Reserve. Anyone who has ever had the good fortune of attending one of these truly unique and special concerts will be sure to attend more of them this summer. The honour of opening this seasons concerts falls on the internationally acclaimed South African Navy Band who get proceedings under way this Sunday at 17:30. Tickets may be purchased at the gate at R40 for adults and R10 for scholars. Good news is that all proceeds made from these concerts will be used to support conservation and environmental education projects within the Helderberg Nature Reserve.

Let us raise the issue of the Big Issue Two years ago the Big Issue was introduced to Somerset West. Sales increased well to provide daily work opportunities for at least eight people. Residents regularly purchased the magazine on street corners. This job does not create wealth. It does, however, provide the dignity of employment. It’s difficult selling a product outside in the heat or rain. Vendors learn discipline as self-motivated entrepreneurs. The system provides a new vendor with free magazines to sell. Thereafter, they purchase stock at half the selling price. Currently, each sale puts R10 in their pocket. There are rules – no alcohol or drugs, no children, be identifiable and provide small change. So, what’s the big issue? Sales and vendors have dropped off half in our area. We are not buying enough magazines! Do you share my helplessness when approached for money on a

Will this money simply buy more liquor or drugs? Our Big Issue-vendors are screened and your purchase will probably contribute to feeding a large household. What needs to happen is that a lot of magazines must be purchased.

Perhaps you have bought a Big Issue and been disappointed by the content? Some months there have only been a few articles which genuinely hold my attention. I have had to remind myself of the spectrum of the target market in terms of age, race and culture. Perhaps next month it will be a better read? Get to know your Big Issue-vendors. They are real people, living real lives, and trying to make a real living. The global financial crisis has hit the Big Issue and times are tough. Please try and make it an issue to regularly purchase the magazine. Read it, and pass it on; leave it in waiting rooms, on the train, in a restaurant. Perhaps someone else will learn to take up the issue? Like Zamikhaya Mtila on his “pitch” at Lourensford Road. Zamikhaya commutes daily from Philippi to work in Somerset West.

Thanks for generous donations to Hospice On behalf of Helderberg Hospice I would like to thank Daniel Benade of Benbel for his generous sponsorship of our Open Gardens Day held last Saturday. Benbel sponsored all the advertising costs involved in the production of flyers and posters and by so doing made it possible for all the funds raised on the day to go directly to the most important part of Hospice care – the patients themselves. Thank you also to Stefanie Raad at Benbel for the design and production of the beautiful posters. The support of the business community in this way is invaluable to sustain the special care of Hospice in the Helderberg.

Mr Blind a shining light In 2005 I used Mr Blind Somerset West to supply and fit wooden blinds to our home in the Strand. Two weeks ago I noticed that the one blind had seven blades damaged (weather or otherwise). I immediately contacted Mr Blind Somerset West (Jan) as to guarantee information and was informed that there was only a 12-month guarantee on the blind! He however arranged for their factory to make seven new blades which were duly fitted today. Mr Blind thank you very much! Be assured of my family’s continued support in the future. Thank you DM for lovely weekend Earlier this year my Mom won a prize for subscribing to the DistrictMail. The prize was a weekend getaway at Chelaya Country Lodge – an offer we took up this past weekend. What a lovely restful weekend we had! Not far to travel (Chelaya is just behind Monkey town); the accommodation was terrific, a home away from home; the gar-

dens were beautiful with lovely lawns, well-kept flowerbeds, ponds with ducks and geese and waterlilies in bloom; and hens and chicks clucking around. What more can one ask for? Thanks to Harriet of Chelaya Country Lodge for offering the prize and to the DistrictMail for their subscription service.

‘Victim’ – the victimiser not the victim While many readers might tend to sympathise with the “victimised motorist” who voiced his plight regarding his treatment by Vetus Schola Security officers in last week’s DistrictMail, just ask residents in Louis Botha Ave and surrounding areas what they think, and they’d give you a very different story. For months, residents have been subjected to the dangerous driving referred to in the article. At any time of day or night the sound of high-revving engines from the white and black Corsa bakkies (yes there are two) can be heard as they speed down the road, and have left long stretches of black tyre marks – evidence of reckless driving. It is not uncommon for residents to be woken up at 03:00 in the morning as these young-

sters party and make their doughnut moves. Louis Botha Avenue and the open green belt is a popular area for old and young alike to walk their dogs. I wonder if the “victimised motorist” and his friends realise just how much of a disturbance and a nuisance they are, and that it is the residents who feel victimised and scared to leave their homes. I believe there have been cases of verbal confrontation and plenty of residents have complained to the authorities. But to get back to the article. It seems as though both sides tell a similar story. So who do we believe? Based on my neighbourhood experience – I know who I believe.

Clive Warren (left) with daughter, Anita Wolfaardt and sister, Doreen Wright.

Warren’s life celebrated and remembered Clive Philip Warren, born in Port Elizabeth in 1934, died on 15 November in the Hermanus Hospital where he had gone for a routine check-up. Clive was educated at Grey High School and matriculated at age 15. Too young to go to university, he joined the Port Elizabeth municipality as a learner civil engineer until he was enticed to join the Ford Motor Company. He married Christine Vere and had two children, Anita and Glenn. He was then asked to manage the Heritage Homes building company in Somerset West. Many buildings, from Cape Town to Hermanus and Caledon were Clive’s designs. He also bought a protea nursery near Bot River from which he sold and exported fresh and dried fynbos. Clive also continued to churn out plans for many housing and shopping developments as well as wine farms. He was also a keen sportsman and enjoyed long distance running, played EP baseball and basketball and also coached baseball with Eric Kielblock. He leaves behind his daughter Anita (married to Dave Wolfaard) in Simonstown and his son Glenn, in Spain; three grandchildren; two sisters Doreen and June and brother Ray, in Port Elizabeth. The funeral takes place on Friday 23 November in the NG Kerksaal in Bot River at 15:00.

Helderberg Wine Festival 2012

19

Visitors flocked to the Helderberg this past weekend to enjoy that which the wine farms had to offer at the 2012 Helderberg Wine Festival.

HAT FESTIVAL: The Helping Animals Together (HAT) organisation held their first ever music festival at Hathersage farm on Sunday to raise funds for the Animal Welfare Society (AWS) Helder berg. The festival was a great success and well supported by animal lovers in the Helderberg and HAT were able to raise R9 500 for the AWS. There was also face painting and a colour ingin competition at the festival and money raised there was donated to the Bird and Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre in Somerset West. The HAT Fes tival organisers thanked Hathersage for sponsoring the venue, the bands Craig Vee, Jesse Jordan, Akkedis and Heather Waters for playing probono as well as Liezie’s Art & Photography for designing all the artwork and tak ing photos. The event was such a suc cess and enjoyed by all who attended that HAT are hoping to make it an annual family festival. Pictured here, musician Craig Vee entertains the ap preciative crowd that supported the event.

From 15 to 19 November, nearly 30 wineries from Sir Lowry’s Village, Somerset West, Faure and Stellenbosch participated in this year’s festival. The festival offered a range of activities at each cellar for both young and old. Visitors could enjoy food stalls, live music, kiddies programmes, exhibitions and more. The festival was in support of Amorim Cork’s Cor Life project, which aims at creating sustainable work opportunities by re-using old corks.

Sune Bosman, Jaques Landman and Anél Brand enjoyed the vibe the wine festival had to offer.

When the Reaper Calls is a play by Peter Colley directed by Lawrie West and can be seen at the Playhouse Theatre this coming week. The story is about Victor and Harlan, two young philosophy professors who have been friends, rivals and pranksters since college days. But Harlan has become a stoic and adopted a strict unemotional regimen in preparation for the afterlife, while Victor’s turned into a wild hedonist who believes “when you’re dead, you’re dead”. He intends to squeeze every drop of pleasure from each fleeting moment. While holidaying with their wives at a remote cottage on the Wild Coast, Victor sets up a trick to prove to Harlan the falseness of his philosophy, but the trick goes murderously wrong and their lives are changed forever. The play kicks off with a special gala evening on 23 November at 19:15 for 20:00. The other shows are on 24 November at 18:30 and 26, 28 and 30 November at 20:00. COLUMN

It’s 'time in the market’ that counts Investment textbooks preach that it is “time in the market” and not “market timing”, which creates long-term wealth. Ask any speculator if he/she agrees and they will no doubt disagree. The speculator/trader aims to buy low and sell high, banking the profits in the interim while waiting for the next opportunity. The typical trade cycle is as follows: Buy, hold, sell, wait and buy again. The most difficult period for any trader is the wait. This the period in the cycle when the mind starts playing games, “I sold too early”, “this time is different”, “if only I had”, “what if I am wrong”. As the valuation becomes stretched so the pressure builds and only the very disciplined trader is able to “stand on the peer and watch the ship sail out of the harbour without diving in after it”. As human beings we are “wired” to be poor investors as our emotions instinctively rule our decision making. “The majority of investors naturally become bearish at the bottom of the market and bullish at the top as the mood of the moment is reflected in prices. This is a powerful force that is exceptionally hard to resist. It is human nature to seek comfort with the majority whether intentional or not,” – Allan Gray portfolio manager. For the majority of us mere mortals the appointment of a professional manager is

the solution. I recall attending a presentation during the 2008 market crash at which a concerned investor questioned the fund manager on the money he had lost on his investment. The highly “intelligent” speaker obviously frustrated by the question responded that it was only numbers. The R 300 000 loss was only numbers to the fund manager it wasn’t someone’s money. Of course the atmosphere soured after this remark to the point of becoming quite hostile; however the fund manager was actually quite correct, it was only numbers and as the numbers had gone down they would come up again, which is exactly what happened. Had the investor panicked and followed the herd into cash he would have realised his loss and then it would no longer have just been numbers, but real money lost. Investment decision making must be objective based on the facts without any subjective emotional influence, if you are able to manage your own money like this then you should seriously consider a career change as your talents are surely wasted doing whatever you are currently doing; watch out Warren Buffet.

Alerted by the screams of a woman who was stabbed while trying to hang on to her handbag in an attempted robbery at Radloff Park Somerset West on Saturday afternoon, Helderberg Crime Watch (HCW) /Vetus Schola (VS) patrol vans rushed to the rescue, releasing their well trained dogs who promptly brought down the two fleeing assailants.

This enabled the security officers

to handcuff the culprits and secure the scene for the arrival of the police. Emergency Medical Operations (EMO) also arrived promptly to render medical assistance where needed. This whole incident formed part of a staged crime scene which demonstrated a combined operation by HCW/VS, EMO and the police. This was done to the delight of the spectators at a family fun day held last weekend in aid of the Animal Welfare Society, PATCH and the Night Shelter.

Officers nip crime in the bud Officers of Secure Rite were involved in various crime combating operations this past week. On Tuesday 13 November supervisor Frans Levitte was called to the Alf Centre in Gordon’s Bay after the alarm was triggered at 20:00. Upon his arrival, he caught a woman in the process of breaking into a vehicle, apprehended her and handed her over to the Gordon’s Bay police. On Thursday 15 November the same officer, along with Asrah Fredericks and Gerrit Olivier rushed to a house in Fagan Street following an alarm activation at 00:50. According to armed response manager Herman Ras, the officers saw two

suspects jumping over the premises’ back wall. “Both suspects were caught. The officers then discovered marks on the door, indicating forced entry into the house. They were handed over to the Somerset Secure Rite officers Freddie Carelse, Mosuwe Tsoloane West police,” he and Adriaan Gilbert with the stolen goods. said. They are your closest support base. • Don’t leave extra house or car keys under your doormat, potted plants or any other obvious outdoor places. Thieves will usually uncover them. Rather give a set to a neighbour who you can trust. • Be aware when driving home at night, if you suspect someone following you, do not drive straight home, rather drive around the block first to get rid of them, otherwise drive straight to the police station. • Do not approach vagrants on the street, rather phone your security company or the police if you are feeling threatened by their presence. • During the day, if you take

an afternoon nap, do not leave the house open, criminals can easily slip in and out of the house without you even noticing. • Dogs are great companions and a wonderful sense of security. However, they can’t always help you in a difficult situations. Always consider having other security options; burglar bars, trelly door / security door, alarm system, electric fencing, etc. • When parking in a big parking lot, it is advised to not park to far away from the rest of the cars – especially at night. This will put you in a vulnerable and lonesome position. •You can not always trust car guards, they should always be wearing a uniform or have some sort of proof to show that they are a genuine car guard, employed by the shop / centre. • When you run into the shop, do not leave your children alone in the car with the doors unlocked. • Do not leave valuables visible in your car, even if it is only an empty bag. • Always take your radio face out of your car at night. • It’s advised to not have your key hanger / bowl close to a door or window.

22 November, 2012

The

Diek van der Zel by 083 292 1585.

Vir verdere inligting bel Tommy Davids by 073 578 0093.

BIRTHDAY

Eleven years of water aerobics A group of mature Helderberg residents who regularly get together for water aerobics, celebrated their 11th birthday last week. According to instructor Janet Bennell, the group gets together three times a week at the Strand municipal pools. On Wednesday 14 November, the group met at The Cove at Harbour Island in festive mood. The theme of the party was Playboy and Playgirl and everyone dressed up for the occasion. “We saw it fitting to celebrate these amazing ladies and men who are committed to their health by exercising in the water at water aerobic classes,” Janet said. Interested parties can phone Janet Bennell on 074 1944 160.

Strand author goes international Strand born author Rashaad van Niekerk has realised a dream; having his first book Memowars of a Schizophrenic, released in Toronto Canada last month. After much research of roughly two years, Van Niekerk depicts life through the eyes of a schizophrenic. Although he has no formal training in psychology, his research takes you extensively into the mind of a schizophrenic. Remembering as a child his fondness for bible stories Van Niekerk had a dream to be a prophet. This sets the scene for moral debates such as; what is the purpose of life? Why we are here? and what is our destiny? The book takes your mind on a journey opening your ears and eyes to things we usually take for granted. He describes the book as being more than just an explanation of the mind. Van Niekerk is strongly motivated to be an example for the children liv-

Wind right for night fishing The recent south and southeast winds have been very conducive for night fishing from our beaches during the past week. The south wind has been dropping in the evenings resulting in the water along our beaches and reefs becoming more tranquil. During the last week a big kob was caught by a boat close to the shore and this past weekend a kob of 11,5 kg was landed off Blake’s Beach. A few nice size dassie and two small geelbek were also beached. During the weekend I received reports of good catches of reasonable size white stump caught in the Langebaan lagoon. On Saturday and Sunday weekend boat anglers and professional boatmen had a few catches of snoek along the Rocky Bank area. However, only one single yellowtail was boated from the West side of Cape Point. Most of the boats that ventured out to other popular spots around Cape Point had between three and eight yellowfin tuna aboard. Earl Fenwick, who fishes in this area regularly, said this was an ideal time to fish for tunny as these shoals often move up the West Coast to find warmer patches around Christmas time. He also mentioned that at present there is quite a bit of good quality bait available, but warned that there may be a shortage during the holiday period. Most of the tunny were taken on bait, but the CD 18 Red Shad Rapalas also work well when trolled. The Gordon’s Bay Boat Angling Club’s (GBBAC) inshore classic was held on Saturday. A mild-mannered sea greeted the boats on Saturday and four boats went to the Macassar side of the bay while the rest of the fleet went to Rocky Bank. Although the yellowtail were everywhere

they were very fussy and only a few were hooked. The snoek were however in abundance and made up for the disappointingly fussy yellowtail. On Sunday morning there was a 30 knot southeast wind at the Point which died away later. The yellowtail were not as prolific as the previous day, but two were caught. There were also a couple of boats that caught red roman, but no kob or geelbek could be found. The final results of the GBBAC Classic were: Top angler: Delano Goldberg. Biggest specie: yellowtail of 7,43 kg caught by Delano Goldberg on the boat Shanken; second biggest specie: snoek of 4,72 kg caught by Louis Becker on the boat Shanken; third biggest specie: red roman of 2,11 kg caught by Gus Rautman on the boat Bad Romance; fourth biggest species was a hottentot of 1,33 kg caught by Delano Goldberg; fifth biggest specie: Jacopever of 1,21 kg caught by Colin Joubert on the boat Bad Romance; top junior was nineyear-old Samaarah Ibrahim on Monish; top woman: Hasena Khan also fishing on Monish. The top boats were: 1. Shanken, skippered by Louis Becker; 2. Relentless, skippered by Daniel Hughes; 3. Bad Romance, skippered by Colin Joubert. If all anglers could take more care of cleaning and lubricating their reels after use every time, their tackle will last longer and perform better for much longer. The common practice of spraying down a reel with a hose or any powerful jet of water only forces the water and sand to enter and pass the salt spray deeper into the bearings and spool. For all your reel repairs and services phone Art on 021 854 3831 Send your fishing news and photos to bjridgway@telkomsa.net.

Surfski Best 4 race in Strand The Strand will play host to the fifth race in the Best 4 Summer Surfski Series at the Lifesaving Club on Sunday 25 November. Silvertree beat Pirates in tense baseball thriller Helderberg Pirates’ first baseball team lost against a highly spirited Silvertree in a tightly contested away game on Saturday 10 November. With both teams being contenders for the top of the league, the match turned out to be a nail-biting thriller with Silvertree finally edging ahead in the penultimate frame to beat Pirates 11–10. Despite errors from both teams Pirates were unable to capitalise on their steadily improving batting performance leaving more than 14 players (potential runs) on bases. Both the second and masters teams were also in action against Silvertree over the weekend, both teams losing 11–4 and 7–4

respectively. The u.14 team beat Battswood 10-7 while the u.10’s lost their game 14-20 against a strong Thistles side where Stuart Christie was named man of the match. All three senior teams will be playing at home from 13:15 onwards this Saturday while the juniors are playing away to their respective teams the weekend of 24th November. Clive Warren, one of the founding members of the Helderberg Pirates Baseball Club, died during the past weekend. The members of the Pirates Club would like to convey their condolences to his friends and family. He will be missed by all.

Helderberg start day two of their away match against Edgemead this Saturday with a slender, but useful, 47 run lead. Edgemead, who are arguably the strongest team in the WPCA 1C league, won the toss and sent the visitors in to bat. With the opposition bowling a disciplined line and length wickets tumbled quickly and Helderberg were soon all out for 87 runs. Edgemead must have thought that they had the game in the bag, but young fast bowler Charl Katts (3/21) and Captain Vincent Castle (3/23) had other ideas. Katts bowled with speed and pin point accuracy to dismiss the top three batsman with no score on the board. The other bowlers followed their example and Edgemead were reeling at 47/7 and were all out for 100. Helderberg then started their second innings and at close of play were 60/3 with a lead of 47 runs. The Autospares Player of the day went to Charl Katts for his inspired bowling performance.

Helderberg’s reserves resumed their match against the reserve D league log leaders Victorians with a lead of 70 runs. Helderberg, who are fourth on the log, won the toss and bowled first on what looked like a very flat wicket. Captain Brent Felton assisted his bowlers with two brilliant catches off the bowling of Daniel Botha and Stephan Mack and Helderberg went to lunch with Victorians on 96/7. Soon after lunch Victorians were all out for 151. Openers Lionel Whitting (48) who is maturing in his opening role and Mario Bougaard (35) put together an opening stand of 75 runs, before both lost their wickets. This brought Owen Thomas (65*) to the crease. He stroked the ball to all corners of the park. He was well supported by Mario Pietersen (30) and Daniel Botha (27*) enabling Heldeberg to score 221/7 in their 60 overs. The Bronski Jeweler Player of the day was Owen Thomas.

Bowlers’ fighting spirit keep HHCC in the game A great fight back by the Hottentots-Holland Cricket Club’s (HHCC) first team bowlers, in their away match against Mowbray on Saturday, will see them start day two this Saturday with a useful lead of 74 runs. HHCC lost the toss and were sent into bat, but play was delayed by almost two hours due to a damp pitch. The visitors lost two early wickets, but recovered well with a 41 run partnership between Shakoer Baderoen and Ruben Matthews. However, after this wickets fell at regular intervals and HHCC were bowled out for 148. The only batsmen who offered any resistance was 17-year-old Shakoer Baderoen who scored 93 runs. Mowbray got off to a flying start and were 104/3 at tea time. HHCC however came out fighting after tea and took the remaining 7 wickets for just 14 runs, bowling Mowbray out

for 118 giving them a slender lead of 30 runs. The best bowlers were captain Riyaad Oliver (15-5-30) and Khalid Crombie (7-3-16). With 19 overs left on day one HHCC started their second innings and were on 44/2 at stumps. The HHCC second team (Assassins) beat Bellville by 101 in their one-day away match. HHCC batted first and scored 229. The best batsmen were Fahdil Crombie (48), Rafeeq Baderoen (34*), Wayne Cloete (33), Logan Savoury (29) and Zacharia Baderoen (27). HHCC bowled Bellville out for 128. Rafeeq Baderoen (7-2-15), Zacharia Baderoen (5-2-19) and Abubakr Rhoda (3-2-20) were the pick of the bowlers. This Saturday the first team resume their match against Mowbray. The Assassins play Peninsula and the third team (Strikers) play Pinelands (both at home).

WP Exco elections are gaining momentum With the Western Province Rugby Football Union’s (WPRFU) elections for president and executive committee (Exco) members coming up on 26 November, things are hotting up. The only two candidates nominated for president are Thelo Wakefield and Herman Abrahams. The rest of the nominations are for: Deputy president, Thelo Wakefield (incumbent), John Bester, Gerald Njengele; vicepresident: John Bester, Sas Bailey, Nadir Isaacs, David Kagan, Spencer King, Zelt Marais; committee members: Godfrey Afrika (Macassar), John Bester, Francois Bonthuys (NNK), Moeneeb Levi (SK Walmers), John Brits (Sir Lowrians), Charlton Cassie, AB Dramat (Primroses), Cassiem Jabaar (Calledonian Roses), Nadeema Khan (Rangers), Kattes Kruger (Kraaifontein), Brian Peters, Victor Petersen, Samuel Theron and Anele Zita (Busy Bees), Reuben Riffel (St Georges). Thelo Wakefield is the overwhelming favourite to become president, while there has been lots of promises made by Herman Abrahams to try and swing the vote. He has even used his monthly club column on the WP website to promote himself, which caused a major outcry of disgust by many clubs, forcing WP Rugby CEO Rob Wagner to officially apologise. Wakefield has wisely taken a different approach, sticking to his habit of attending club year-end functions, addressing club meetings with his vision for the Union and more importantly making no pie-in-thesky promises.

Both candidates are vastly experienced administrators with a love for club rugby, but with a new breed of administrators at most of the 92 clubs across the province, clubs are sure to make their vote count. Locally, it would be great news to eventually get a Helderberg-based candidate on the WP Exco. Godfrey Afrika, John Brits and Reuben Riffel are sure to gain some support outside the region, while a strong call has been made for clubs in the Helderberg to stand together. Other candidates with strong support are Kattes Kruger (Kraaifontein) and Anele Zita (Busy Bees). Jerome Paarwater recently questioned on Cape TV how administrators from lower league clubs could be capable of assisting in running the Union. This is exactly the mentality I hope our candidates will address, as this is the type of mentality that is preventing our players from going all the way to the top. With the touch rugby season about to kick off, the Strand Muslim Youth League, with their motto, “A Side-Step in the Right Direction’’, will be hosting their annual tournament at Melkbaai, surfers corner, Strand on 2 December 2012. Registration between 07:00 and 09:00 at a cost of R50. For more information call Ghoosain Bederoen on 083 7146 598.

CRICKET: LEAGUE IN FULL SWING

Batting collapse lets SWCC down with the home team leading by 109 runs. After winning the toss, SWCC took the field and reduced the host to 62/7 at lunch. However, Mitchells Plain first team fought back and were all out for 162 runs. Gert Barnaard (20-3-32) and Mike Harris (101-19) were the stand out bowlers. Somerset West then went in to bat and were bowled out for 73 runs. Mike Harris (22) top scored. Mitchells Plain will resume their second innings on 20/1.

Somerset West were greeted by a very green and unprepared wicket last weekend. Then after losing the toss took to the field first and bowled their hosts out for 69 runs in 29 overs. Great efforts were put in by all, but both Estiaan Groenewald (11-5-33) and Michael Osborne (6.1-1-5-7 were outstanding taking all the wickets between them. Somerset West then went in to bat and started very well and were on 44/0 in the 16th over, with Leniel Trezire top scoring with 27 runs. However, a major batting collapse followed and Somerset West were dismissed for 98 in the 38th over. Juan van der Merwe added a much needed 12 runs at the end of the innings to earn his team one batting point. With a lead of 29 runs Somerset West took the field again with more than 40 overs left in the day. The bowlers again bowled well and by stumps Cravenby were 90 for 7 with a lead of 61 runs. The wickets were shared by all the bowlers but Shaun Dicks (9.1-2-2-13) and Juan van der Merwe (10-5-2-15) bowled great spells.
