DAY BY DAY By Susan Swindell Day

Get on the Soul Train

O

ne of the more precious moments in a preschool or kindergarten graduation is when, one by one, each child gets up to the microphone to announce what he or she wants to be when they grow up. You hear, “Veterinarian,” “Fireman” and the occasional, “Doctor.” These are all adorably stated; parents beaming until their cheeks hurt. Hardly any of us become what we say we want to be when we’re little, and yet we continue to ask our little ones what they want to be when they grow up, making what we “want” to be more important than what we already are. Why can’t we just leave our kids alone? Seriously, why do we play this game with our kids as though what they are right now at 5 or 6 is not enough? I have a small plaque a friend gave me. It says, “Children cannot be molded, they are meant to be unfolded,” and I just love it. It speaks to how important it is to let them be without pushing your own agenda onto them. What we become is our own business, not our parents’, and what our kids become is NOT about us. We birth them, raise them for 18 or so years and then it’s time to let go. Did you hear me? LET GO. We spend a good 18 years learning to let out the apron strings our kids are tied to (and that we are too), and then finally you have to take that apron off and let it fly away. Job done. How’d you do? We sort of measure how we did by what they become, and yet who they are is there from the very beginning. Is it possible that we should actually get out of the way from the very start? I mean, yes, you have to feed a child and keep him safe as he grows. Teach good manners and get them a good education, but how do you tend to what’s really inside the child? The part that you can’t see? The child’s soul? You give it the freedom to be itself. If that child doesn’t like broccoli, you don’t make them sit at the table until the broccoli gets eaten. If the child wants to paint, you give him paint. If he wants to build with blocks, you provide blocks. You provide and provide and provide and GET OUT OF THE WAY. The idea of “life coach” may even be a bit invasive because here you’re again telling someone what to do. Don’t tell your kids what to do; what to like or not like; what to wear or not wear. Tending to their souls is like trying to grow orchids. These are strong, beautiful flowers. If you pour cups of water on them, they will drown. A little bit a week, easy does it, a room with plenty of air and light, easy. It’s so important to give your kids room, no matter what you think. Their life is their own. You are simply a facilitator. Let them be, trust them from the start and take care of their unique qualities. That’s your job. And it’s a soulful one.

QUESTION! “I love to stretch out with my child and stay with her until she falls asleep at night. Is this a terrible habit? My husband says it is. To me it’s closeness and temporary. Does anyone else feel that way?”

CO-SLEEPING, ANYONE? “My 8-year-old son still sleeps with me every night. He has his own room, but desires to be near his mom. It won’t last forever. My great aunt said these words to me one day, “You let that baby sleep with you because the day will come when you will wish he would.” Rhonda Morelock “Such a lucky little girl! A great book on this subject is The Family Bed by Tina Thevinen. In most cultures throughout history parents have coslept with their children, satisfying a deep need for security, bonding and love even while asleep. Enjoy those snuggles!” Debbie Raab “Speaking as a mother that has buried a child, you will NEVER and I mean NEVER regret taking the time to lie next to that sweet, warm, miracle. The incredibly funny things they do to try to stay awake. The faces, the songs, the “I love you’s,”

the kisses, the little fingers that open your eyes to see if you are asleep. They will be gone soon. VERY SOON. In the blink of an eye. Believe me, there is not a day that goes by that I don’t think of those moments and wish for more. Whatever you would be doing instead of snuggling with your child is absolutely a waste of precious time. Not only is your husband wrong, I pity him. He should be taking turns with you. You snuggle one night and he snuggles the next. He is missing more than he can ever understand.” Marie Smith “No! This is awesome! What is it with people being so scared their kids depend on them to meet emotional needs? Why as a society are we worried that our kids want to be close to us? She’s not always going to want to cuddle with you or even be close to you all the time! The days might be long, but the years go by fast and you’ll miss this time tremendously! There is

nothing wrong with what you’re doing. You don’t have an issue and neither does your daughter. Your husband has the issue; you do you. You and your daughter’s love languages may be touch and/or quality time; his may not be those so he doesn’t speak it or understand it. Samantha Down “It’s not temporary, believe me. You want them to be able to fall asleep on their own. Maybe create a new bedtime routine where you cuddle on the couch and read. Then send her off to bed on her own. That way she won’t be dependent on you to fall asleep. Does it matter ... not really. I LOVE cuddling up to my babies too, but I had a habit to break.”

of this. We didn’t start this practice with our two oldest. They always slept in their own bed, (and snuggled with us in the mornings), but our youngest had apnea of infancy (stopped breathing in her sleep) as a baby and was on a hospital monitor. As a result, she had to sleep in her own bed in our room for more that her first year. She has always been very snuggly. She slept in her room for probably one-and-a-half to two years then started sneaking into our bed in the middle of the night. We don’t mind, and cherish the time as she is our last. That said, we don’t allow her to go to sleep in our bed because we also cherish our time alone together! Maybe set some ground rules for how often and how long.” Christy Veal

NaQuasha Cane “I think it’s fine as long as it is not affecting your marriage. Parents need quiet time alone together. I know marriages that suffered greatly because

After moving to Wichita, Kansas, she performed in rock bands in area clubs and met recording engineer John McBride, whom she married in 1988. After returning home to sing with the Schiffters at a battle of the bands, she decided to move to Nashville and sing country music. Learn more about this exhibit at CountryMusicHallofFame.org.

PARENTING BY SUSAN DAY

WHAT TO DO ABOUT A BITING TODDLER “We had a little incident today,” can be the worst thing for you to hear.

18 august 2021

nashvilleparent.com

T

oddlers are not tyrants, but some of them do go through a developmental stage that includes their tiny, strong chompers. Biting is quite common among children ages 1 to 3 and may be linked to numerous factors, most of which are related to the difficulty of expressing feelings. But if you get a message from your childcare or after a playdate that your toddler bit another child — it falls squarely on your pretty little parenting head. What’s wrong? What am I not doing right? Now what? And ... how can I help my child get through this unbecoming stage? We all want well-behaved kids, it’s what parenting is all about, and while biting won’t last forever, it’s no fun when your child’s the biter. So what do you do? And how to you manage another parent’s hostility toward you and your child if another‘s child is on the receiving end? First: there’s nothing wrong with your parenting if your child gets into a biting cycle. Second: Look at your child and try to understand what she’s going through so you can proceed to curtail the issue with empathy.

Causes of Biting

“Think of biting as a form of communication for your child, but it can also be related to other things,” says Carrie Lind, M.D., assistant professor of Clinical Pediatrics at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. Biting can: • Relieve pain from teething • Explore cause and effect (“What happens when I bite?”) • Experience the sensation of biting • Satisfy a need for oral-motor stimulation • Imitate other children and adults • Feel strong and in control • Get attention • Act in self-defense • Communicate needs and desires, such as hunger or fatigue • Communicate or express difficult feelings, such as frustration, anger, confusion, or fear (“There are too many people here and I feel cramped”)

Should You Label Your Child a ‘Biter?’ “No one likes a negative label, even a child,” Lind says. “Negative labels can affect how you view your child and even affect the child’s feelings about himself. Instead, you can tell your child, ‘I love you, but I do not like your biting,’” Lind adds.

Understanding is Key

Think about it: from the time your child was an infant they have led with their mouth. Whether it’s chewing on a teething toy or eating while breastfeeding, the mouth has led the way up to this point. So when and if biting begins for a toddler, know that they’ve been allowed to be very oral for a very long time now without anyone saying they can’t be. So easy does it when bringing in the newly needed discipline. “Try to understand why your child is biting,” Lind says. “If your child bites out of frustration, for example, try to encourage other ways to handle that emotion such as saying, ‘No,’ or, ‘Mine,’ or even signing ‘Help’ or ‘Stop,’ and provide plenty of hugs of understanding, too.” Empathize with your child’s frustrations by saying things like, “I know it feels bad when someone takes your toy,” or by being aware of transitional experiences that may be happening that are hard such as starting a new day care, moving to a new place, weaning, or even a new sibling in the home. Know that when your child is going through a stressful time they may require extra attention. Of course, if you have a child who is biting repeatedly, it’s important to monitor your child so you can watch for what’s triggering the biting.

Stopping the Biting

Now that you have a good idea about why your child is biting, it’s time to nip it in the bud. Here are ways to do that: • RESPOND: If you are there when your toddler bites, be firm right away and say, “No biting! It hurts!” • ENCOURAGE: Say, “Use your words, honey, not your teeth.” • MONITOR: Try to stay one step ahead of your child if they’ve taken to biting to get what they want. Remove toys or triggers as needed.

What If Your Child Gets Bitten? “While biting may be a normal stage of development for some toddlers, it is not acceptable,” Lind says.

• Remove your toddler from the child she has bitten. Say, “No” immediately and something like, “We do not bite because it hurts others.” • Focus most of your attention on the child who has been bitten. Model behavior by comforting the child that was bitten and saying, “I am so sorry you got bitten. I know biting really hurts.” • Never bite the biting child to show how biting feels. This is confusing and scary. If biting persists, try a negative consequence. • If these techniques or interventions are not effective, parents should talk to their pediatrician or family physician. “Remember, it is normal to feel protective of your little one!” says Lind. “But also know that the parents of the child who is biting are probably just as horrified as you are. It is most important to understand how the daycare is addressing and discouraging biting behaviors. Ask if they have a policy to address recurrent biting.”

Be Patient and Kind

As with learning any new behavior, remember that learning a new habit — such as not biting — takes time. Be patient and help your child to move on from her hard experience. Susan Day is editor of this magazine and a mom of four.

GET SCHOOLED! Critical Race Theory is Banned and More Education Laws That Are Now in Effect to Know About

By Susan Day

T

he Tennessee legislature was extremely active in the spring of 2021, and as of July 1, 2021, 32 new laws are now in effect, many of them related to education. We outline many of them here. Of course, the hottest button is the ban on critical race theory (CRT) being taught in other public schools across the country. Regarding the politically controversial CRT ban in Tennessee, in talking with news’ reporters last May, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee said, “We need to make sure that our kids recognize that this country is moving toward a more perfect union,

that we should teach the exceptionalism of our nation and how people can live together and work together to make a greater nation, and to not teach things that inherently divide or pit either Americans against Americans or people groups against people groups.” WHAT THE BAN ON CRT MEANS FOR THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR • Teachers cannot instruct that “an individual, by virtue of the individual’s race or sex, is inherently privileged, racist, sexist or oppressive, whether consciously or subconsciously.”

• “Impartial discussion of controversial aspects of history” is still permitted under the law, and limits on teacher speech won’t apply when a teacher is responding to a student’s question or referring to a historic figure or group. • The state education commissioner can withhold funds from any school found to be in violation of the law. COMMON CORE GONE FOR GOOD • A bill that prohibits the use of textbooks and materials created to align with Common Core standards. Schools in violation of the new law can lose funding. Help Your Kids Get the Most Out of the New School Year

A

After going through the COVID-19 school year in 2020, parents learned exactly how much support their kids need with education. This year, know what’s going on in schools and give your child plenty of positive reinforcement to support his education.

TEXTBOOK TRANSPARENCY ACT • This act ensures that all textbooks used by Tennessee students are accessible online for public view. The new statute requires that textbook publishers make the materials available as long as they are actively being used in the classroom. THREAT OF MASS VIOLENCE • Any communicating of a threat to commit an act of violence on school property or at a school-related activity is now a Class A misdemeanor offense and a Class B misdemeanor if a person with knowledge fails to report it. In Tennessee, Class A misdemeanors are punishable by up to 11 months and 29 days in jail, a fine of up to $2,500 or both. TENNESSEE LEARNING LOSS REMEDIATION AND STUDENT ACCELERATION • This legislation strengthens Tennessee’s third grade reading retention policy by ensuring that students are on grade-level before being promoted to the fourth grade. and provide a “reasonable accommodation” to a student who has conveyed in writing that they are unwilling or unable to use multi-occupancy restrooms or changing facilities designated for the person’s sex. It bars letting transgender people use multi-person facilities that don’t align with their sex at birth. SAFE STARS ACT • A collaboration between the Tennessee Department of Health and the Program for Injury Prevention in Youth Sports at The Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, this law creates standards and metrics for student athlete safety. It is one of the most comprehensive health and safety programs in the United States for K-12 athletics. HOPE SCHOLARSHIP/ HOMESCHOOLERS • The new law extends aid to homeschool students who both complete six credit hours of dual-enrollment and maintain at least a 3.0 GPA in those courses. Under the previous law, homeschool students could not qualify through their GPA score, unlike public and private school counterparts. ccording to the Center for Public Education, kids attend about 900 to 1,000 hours per year in school. That’s a lot of time, but are they getting the best education possible? The only way to assure that they are is through making yourself a partner in your child’s learning. Here are ways to do that:

• Participate Attend back-to-school nights, conferences and volunteer in your child’s school when possible. This creates an awareness on your child’s part of the importance of education. Visit your school websites, know what’s going on, know your child’s friends and be a part of the conversations.

• Monitor Homework Support your kids by knowing what their assignments are, what they are working on in classes and how they are being taught. Email your child’s teachers to know specifics — it is the best way to get “inside” your child’s education.

• Teach Organization Being organized is the bedrock for completing projects and getting items turned in for credit. Teach your kids the importance of being on time, keeping a list of things they need to do and keeping everything together between school and home.

• Give Encouragement Providing positive reinforcement for the things kids do right builds their confidence, helps them succeed and allows them to navigate in the world knowing that they can achieve.

PARENTING

How the Arts Excite Kids, Lessen Anxiety and Develop

creativity Exposing kids to art, theater, music and dance from an early age does more than provide an outlet. The arts provide mental, emotional and educational benefits, too. By Susan Swindell Day

THE ARTS

O

ne of the very first drawings a little kid makes is a stick figure. It may be Mommy or Daddy. It may be the teacher. It may be a self-portrait. Next comes a lollipop tree, a pointy house, a giant sun. As in all things of life, we start small before growing into larger, more bold ideas of self-expression, but express ourselves we must and express ourselves we will — one way or another. It’s true that a picture says a thousand words, and when kids are young, their scribbles and fingerpaintings may not seem like much, but they help the child to get out what’s inside. That’s why the arts are so important for kids as they grow. People are not one-dimensional stick figures, they are messy, in-depth puzzles of rich and challenging emotions. Some studies have linked the repression of negative emotions to increased anxiety, and in a 2012 study of people who lived to 100, from Cornell Medical College, emotional expression was found to be a common trait along with a positive attitude toward life. Simply put, want to help your kids express themselves in a healthy way? Put as much emphasis on their arts education as you do their academic or athletic. While taking an arts class of any kind is different from art therapy — an approach proven to improve physical, mental, and emotional well-being through creative self-expression for children (and adults, too!) — it makes sense that arts for any reason help with self-expression. The arts include music, dancing, theater, art, poetry, writing and various ways of using them.

Imagination is more important than knowledge.” —albert einstein

KIDS DEVELOP LIFE SKILLS THROUGH ARTS ACTIVITIES The arts may seem like fun and games — and it is — but you may not realize that your child is actually learning a lot through exploring the arts and doing art activities. Kids gain useful life skills through art, so encourage them to get creative and you will quickly see that your children are picking up these skills: Communication “When a child draws a picture, paints a portrait or dances around the living room, that child is beginning to communicate visually,” says Mary Ann Kohl, author of Primary Art: It’s the Process, Not the Product (Gryphon House). A child may draw to document an actual experience like playing in the park, release feelings of joy by painting swirling colors or share an emotionally charged experience like the passing of a loved one through art. Art goes beyond verbal language to communicate feelings that might not otherwise be expressed. Social & Emotional “Art helps children come to terms with themselves and the control they have over their efforts,” Kohl says. Through art, they also practice sharing and taking turns. Art fosters positive mental health by allowing kids to show individual uniqueness as well as accomplishment, all part of a positive self-concept. Fine Motor Skills Holding a paintbrush so that it will make the desired marks, snipping paper with scissors into definite shapes, drawing with a crayon or squeezing glue from a bottle in a controlled manner all help develop a child’s fine motor skills and control of materials. SELF-EXPRESSION and CREATIVITY Kids express themselves through art on a fundamental level. Picture a toddler who has a new baby sister busily pounding his fists into Play-Doh; a 6 year old joyfully painting flowers with huge arm movements blending reds and yellows; a 10 year old doing a spoton imitation of his grandmother. Creating art allows children to work through feelings and emotions. Rather than being told what to

nashvilleparent.com

do, answers and directions come from the child. Art requires freethinking, experimentation and analysis — all part of creativity. And a child does not have to create a masterpiece to have a meaningful artistic experience. Art is a process, not a product. It’s tempting to want our child’s audition for the school play to be perfect to prove that he has talent, but art is the process of creating — exploring, discovering and experimenting — that has the greatest value. The freedom to express yourself yields creativity — the skills to shape your expression is what training in any art form is about. GETTING STARTED AT HOME “While you may want your home to look picture-perfect, seeking perfection is not in your best interests is you want to raise creative kid,” says author Amanda Blake Soule in her book, The Creative Family: How to Encourage Imagination and Nurture Family Connections (Roost Books). She says that when we give kids the space and encouragement they need to explore their surroundings, they can become the most inspiring of artists the most inquisitive scientists, the most original thinkers. Short of letting them destroy your home, teach your children early on how to prepare a creative workspace with materials, play music of all kinds that you love for them and discover who THEY love, show them great performances. Emphasize creation, unique ideas and no rules. Kids who grow up to think outside of the box are those kids who learned to come up with solutions through their own imaginations. To tap into that, they need to be free to think on their own. There are several ways to bring them to this with your parenting: Pretend Play According to Po Bronson, best-selling author of What Should I Do With My Life (Ballantine), pretend play is associated with high creativity. Supply your kids with space, props, dress-up clothes, ideas for make believe and plenty of down time for it. If it gets messy, so be it. Refrain from sending “what a mess!” messaging. Bronson’s research shows that moving into middle school, kids who get into fantasy play when they’re young display a higher level of creativity

from kids who don’t, so keep on encouraging their involvement in theater, music, dance and fine art. Invent and Create “The term ‘open-ended’ means that there is no end product expected,” Bronson says. Open-ended play allows kids to create whatever they can imagine. Don’t insist, for example, that your child MUST follow the directions for his Lego kit. Buy blocks, paints, fabrics and openended types of toys for imaginative play and throw out the rules. Once you’ve encouraged your child with suggestions and supplies, the classes they’re interested in or the instruments they’d like to play, step back. Provide the freedom that allows for unstructured creativity to rule the day. Whether or not you yourself are a creative parent doesn’t matter. Chances are, if you’re not you’d like to be. So why hold back? Go on a creativity journey with your kids and break out of the boxes society wants to shove you in. Don’t let the arts be squelched in favor of academics or athletics. Know that the very essence of creativity is what gives individuals the chance to excel in whatever they pursue. The arts provide what kids need to be the squeaky wheels in life. And you know what they say about squeaky wheels. Susan Day is an avid arts’ enthusiast, a mom of four creative kids and the editor of this magazine.
