on the cover A growing network of locals has emerged recently with the aim of restoring some semblance of balance to the Columbus music community, creating increased opportunities for women, transgender and non-binary individuals to contribute to a scene that can still feel overwhelmingly homogenous. This week’s cover story highlights the efforts three groups are making to open up opportunities for all. Illustration by Raeghan Buchanan

Nelsonville Music Festival dos and don’ts By Justin McIntosh // @AliveEditor
Don’t go to bed early.
Having covered Nelsonville Music Festival for something like nine of its 11 years, you could say I’m something of an old pro, which means my tip game is on fleek. Here are some of my more fairly obvious tips that I’m still surprised to see ignored each year.
The campground tent (over by the, you know, campground) keeps the after-hours party going with square dancing on Thursday, DJ Barticus and John E. Clift on Friday and Heatwave on Saturday.
Don’t be afraid to nap under the shade of a tree. Naps under trees
ARTS EAT & DRINK
which, you know, duh. That said, people still show up every year and act surprised when it’s freezing at night, blazing hot during the day, and pours down rain at some point, muddying up huge swaths of the grounds in the process. Don’t let a lack of foresight ruin the experience.
A-list
Do plan on encountering Ohio weather,

Do take advantage of the Hocking College facilities. Like the showers. Or the restrooms. Or the airconditioned lounge with outlets to charge your phone.
Don’t wait to get that shower, unless you

want a cold one. Seriously, there’s

like a 15-minute window for a hot shower. You’ve been warned.
Do unplug at the No-Fi Cabin. It’s small (only fits about 20 or so) — so you’ll need to arrive early — but the intimacy makes for a truly memorable experience.
Don’t waste your mornings at the campground. Athens is a short drive away and the quaint Nelsonville downtown square is worth exploring. Shows don’t often start till after lunch, so get out there and enjoy the scenic Hocking Hills region while you wait.
Do get your sweat on. There’s yoga in the morning, and you can even rent a bike at the festival and ride the bike path to Athens (about 20 miles). Or rent a kayak or canoe nearby. Or explore the region’s hiking trails.
Do indulge your ADD. The three stages are short jaunts from each other, so it’s entirely practical to see at least 15-30 minutes of every act on the bill. Not feeling something? Move on to the next show.
Don’t be a wallflower during the Flaming Lips. Get close, real close, and let your inhibitions loose.
Just, you know, leave your Native American headdress at home. Come on, it’s 2015. Do I really need to tell you why that’s inappropriate? But …
Don’t be afraid to dress up otherwise. The Lips crowd around you won’t be shy to wild out. Follow their lead.

hen Carl Zealer was 12, he wanted to be drawn into an episode of “The Simpsons” like his favorite celebrities; 21 years later, he’s getting his wish. The 33-year-old carnieturned-toy aficionado won the chance to be part of “The Simpsons’” upcoming season when he bought a skateboard signed by Simpson’s creator Matt Groening and the 50,000 raffle entries that came with it from the A Night of Too Many Stars autism fundraiser. This fall, Zealer will finally get to see his dream realized when his episode airs — he hopes he’s a carnie in the episode.
12
I used to be a carnie! The first product I ever sold was like a ShamWow. I started selling Squirmles at Trader’s World in Cincinnati. I used to have a kiosk at Tuttle Crossing, and I had a program on QVC. I bought the rights to the toy, so I decided to buy up the rights of other old toys. I wanted to recreate the demonstrations I did at fairs in the store, so I gave the companies a TV display of me doing the demo.
It really gave me leverage in retail. That’s how I came up with the idea for Nowstalgic toys. We now own the rights to 17 old toys. Squirmles is still my favorite though. We now have an office in China we call the “Wow Factory.” I miss the carnival so much. It was an awesome community of people. Every day you’re demoing for 12 or 13 hours. It’s a rush to demo in front of a big crowd.

My friend told me I was wasting my money. I bought a $5,000 skateboard signed by Matt Groening from A Night Of Too Many Stars because it came with 50,000 raffle entries. But I thought, even if I lost, the money goes to autism programs, so it wouldn’t be a waste. I want to tell my 12-yearold self, “We did it, man!” Once I get something stuck in my head, I make it happen. I really believe in the power of positive thinking. I know it sounds weird to people who don’t use it, but I see it play out in my life all the time. It’s weird. Every morning I listen to motivational stuff while I’m showering. I listen to a lot of Tony Robbins and Les Brown. It gets me pumped up.
ColumbusAlive.com | Thursday, May 28, 2015
It better be me who voices the character. I don’t know yet if I’ll get to do it. I actually called the people who held the contest and tried to finagle a deal so I could voice the character. I told them I’d “Simpsonize” the Squirmles and donate a portion of the proceeds back to autism, since [the charity] didn’t quite meet its goal. They asked me the ideal situation I’d like to see my character in the show; I told them I’d love to be doing demos.

At first, I thought I was getting punked. It’s been a weird dream of mine to be in “The Simpsons” since I was a kid. Growing up I thought it would be so cool to be drawn into an episode of “The Simpsons” like celebrities. I freaked out when I found out I won; my girlfriend recorded me saying some colorful words. They called me while I was in Madrid shooting a commercial and said I was one of 10 finalists. They wanted to do a Skype interview with me the next day, but I wanted to do [the interview] right away to get a one-up on the other 10 finalists. They asked me tons of trivia type questions about the show, and who my favorite character was; it’s Sideshow Bob. After the interview I thought, “Wait a minute, maybe I’m getting pranked.”

It’s a collective that brings cultural and relevant arts to the city. They’ve since brought a play called “A Real ‘Nigga’ Show” and it was a sold-out show. It talked about the etymology of the [n-word], the induction of modern day use from a racial standpoint to the endearment standpoint and everything in-between. [Maroon Arts Group] has more stuff coming. If you’re not familiar with the Maroons, they were captured slaves, primarily out of Jamaica, who took their freedom back and made their way to the mountainous region in Jamaica. The Maroon Arts Group [name] is taken from them, wanting to preserve tradition and stay relevant.

s a teenager, Mickey Mocnik attended youth camp at Fur Peace Ranch, a picturesque musicians’ retreat in the small, riverside town of Pomeroy, and the experience nearly led the Nervosas guitarist to give up the instrument altogether. “There were three girls out of 30 campers, and the environment there, to be honest, was pretty hostile to the three of us,” said Mocnik, 26, who started playing guitar at 9 years old. “It was a real challenge to be at that camp because nobody took me seriously.” Similar stories cropped up in recent interviews with the likes of singer-songwriter Lydia Loveless, Raeghan Buchanan of the Girls! and Brittany Corrigan of
Teenage Strangers, among others. Loveless, 24, relayed the animosity she faced as a teenager getting her start in the music industry, writing in a Facebook message, “People just didn’t want to accept demos and show requests from a bunch of little girls. There were some helpful people, yeah, but for the most part it was a tough learning curve. I think I’m finally [starting to] understand the music business at last, after 10 years.” Buchanan and Corrigan, in turn, both spoke of delaying musical pursuits for years due to some combination of familial and societal pressure. “I wanted to pick up the guitar when I was 12 … and I saved up money to get lessons, but my parents wouldn’t let me,” said Buchanan, 33, who eventually took up the drums at 26. “They

A lot of women have stories where they can pinpoint the moment when they slowed down or gave up.” “I wanted to play in a band my whole life, but it didn’t happen until I was 20,” said Corrigan, now 23, in a separate interview. “The Cleveland scene I was involved in, to put it bluntly, was pretty sexist. Even though I had that drive, I was never asked [to join in], and I didn’t think it would ever happen.” Recently, a growing network of locals has emerged with the aim of restoring some semblance of balance, creating increased opportunities for women, transgender and non-binary individuals to contribute to a music scene that can still feel overwhelmingly homogenous. These include Grrrls Rock Columbus, a music day camp for female, transgender and gendervariant youth, FemmeFest, an inclusive, grassroots music festival that recently announced it would return for a second go-round this Labor Day weekend, and the Womxn/Trans/Non-binary Folx Band in a Hat Extravaganza, an event

the bands in Columbus, and a lot of them are my friends, but being enveloped in a scene pretty dominated by cis males (individuals who were born male and identify as such) it started to be like, ‘What can I possibly do to help change that?’” For Band in a Hat, Jones and Keister invited anyone who didn’t identify as a cis male to submit their name, and groups were then drawn at random from the pool of participants. In all nearly 40 individuals submitted, and eight bands are currently scheduled to perform at the June showcase, with the hope being at least a handful of the participating acts will continue onward in some form. On a Tuesday in mid-May, one of these bands, dubbed Crystal Labris, gathered for its first rehearsal at Shout Out Loud Prints in Grandview. The

Though the five bandmates were meeting for one of the first times, the vibe in the wood-paneled room, which could have passed for a teenager’s
bedroom circa 1975 with its assembled clutter and haphazard décor (strings of holiday lights, beer signs and a blacklight poster advertising “A friend with weed is a friend indeed”), remained overwhelmingly open and congenial — a fact O’Jordan attributed at least in part to the concept. “Normally music is about similar artistic ideas joining together and then identity comes after that, but I thought it was really cool to be part of a project where identity was the first thing,” he said. “It was more ‘Do you identify as a non-binary person? A trans person? A lady? Great! Do you want to make music with people like you?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah I do! That sounds rad!’” While Band in a Hat (the Folx in the event listing refers more broadly to “people,” or “folks,” rather than a
prescribed style of music) extended to all ages, Grrrls Rock Columbus, which kicks off its second year on July 19, focuses on younger musicians, inviting campers ages 12 through 18 to participate in a week of instrumental instruction, songwriting workshops and performance at the downtown-adjacent Fort Hayes Metropolitan Education Center. “The idea is to create an environment where girls and gendervariant youth can work together and be creative and have a space to be themselves,” said Mocnik, who joined fellow organizer/instructor Meg Zakany for a mid-May interview at an Old North diner. “And it’s based on their abilities instead of their looks. “Even now when I’m approaching peers I ask, ‘Have you ever thought about playing an instrument?” said Zakany, who will join fellow Grrrls Rock organizers in hosting an equipment drive and fundraiser concert at Ace of Cups on Friday, May 29. “And I always get [that line] ‘I’ve always wanted to play, but...’ “It seems people want to play an instrument, but the world gives us this model where it’s like, ‘Maybe this is something you shouldn’t do,’ so we’re still not seeing a lot of women and non-conforming people making music.” Grrrls Rock aims to shift this trend, and across the board every musician interviewed expressed regret that similar programs weren’t readily available in the midst of their formative years. “I would have loved to have had something like that; I probably would have been a lot braver at a lot younger of an age,” Loveless wrote. “If I had [Grrrls Rock] when I was 12 or 13, who knows where I’d be and what kind of music I could be creating,” said Corrigan, who volunteered as a band coach at the camp last year. “To instill the confidence that you can do anything regardless of your sex or who you are … is just the coolest thing.” Increasingly, local musicians are tapping into this developing sense of possibility, forging bonds and launching new creative ventures intended to draw out traditionally underrepresented and underserved populaces. “It’s not just [FemmeFest] or Grrrls Rock Columbus or Band in a Hat,” said Buchanan, who helped found FemmeFest and is involved in this year’s itineration of Grrrls Rock, to note just one of many overlaps among these emerging groups. “We all know each other, and we’re all working together to create a network of comforting, empowering events.”

everyone to be appreciated for their abilities and for their minds.” It’s a pressure Loveless, for one, knows all too well. “In general there’s a super sexist vibe in the music business,” she wrote. “I actually just had a woman comment ‘anything but blonde, come on!’ on my Facebook page. Or people will comment how great I sound in a song, but [add] that I’ve gained a shitload of weight. Or they will tell my band members to ‘have me’ do a certain cover, or to smile constantly. It’s amazing how little the focus is on music sometimes.” These gender biases don’t fade with time, either. During a recent Who concert at Nationwide Arena, two gray-haired male concertgoers spent several moments dissecting opener Joan Jett’s appearance, commenting about “all the miles” she’s put on — this despite the ferociousness of her performance, which found the musician affixing the heel of her boot to the audience’s collective throat and refusing to let up. Indeed, based solely on the strength of her material, the Who could have just as easily served as Jett’s opening act. To counter these deep-seated biases, both Mocnik and Zakany stressed the importance of connecting with female and gender-variant musicians early in adolescence, since most tend to pick up instruments far later in life than their male counterparts. In Mary Ann Clawson’s study “When Women Play the Bass: Instrument Specialization and Gender Interpretation in Alternative Rock Music,” published in 1999, the sociology professor examined this divide, writing, “Women respondents … began to play their rock instruments at the median age of 19, followed by participation in a first band at the median age of 21. This was in marked contrast to male respondents, who began to play at 13 and joined first bands at the median age of 15.3.”

Hurray for the Riff Raff By Andy Downing // @andydowning33
On “The Body Electric,” a harrowing song that falls near the midpoint of Hurray for the Riff Raff’s latest long-player, Small Town Heroes, singer Alynda Lee Segarra stops to retrieve a woman’s bullet-riddled body from the river. “And I said, ‘My girl, what happened to you now?’” she sings. “I said, ‘My
girl, we gotta stop this somehow.’” The tune, penned as a response to a folk murder ballad tradition where women are commonly treated as little more than disposable flotsam — see the nameless sharecropper’s daughter Waylon Jennings dispatches with a .22 on “Cedartown, Georgia,” or the woman Red Arnall cold-bloodedly guns down in “Cocaine Blues,” a song later performed by Johnny Cash on At Fol-
som Prison — reflects the empowering mindset that has remained a hallmark of Segarra’s music from her earliest days. “I first started writing songs when I was learning about feminism, and it was a tool for me to somehow put my story out in the world and put my humanity out in the world,” said the New York-born, New Orleans-based musician, who performs alongside her band
at the Nelsonville Music Festival on Saturday and Sunday, May 30-31. “I really needed my music to make me feel powerful, and now I hope my music makes other girls feel powerful.” Though Hurray for the Riff Raff draws upon traditional sounds, incorporating elements of bluegrass, country, folk and more, Segarra’s perspective is relentlessly progressive, presenting women as steady rather

If you’re going to this year’s Nelsonville Music Festival, chances are you’re going for one of the headliners. But it’s the undercard that’ll keep you coming back year after year. What those second-tier acts might lack in name recognition, they’ll more than make up in wowzas (an official scientific music term). I tried to focus on acts not performing on the Main Stage, and likewise avoided those with Columbus ties (because Connections and Bummers shouldn’t be hidden gems to you). Otherwise, here are a few of my favorites at this year’s fest.

Ezra Furman 10:45 p.m. Thursday, Porch Stage For my money, Furman’s one of the most underrated indie rock songwriters of the last decade or so. Furman routinely manages the impossible task of being at once poetic, vulnerable, sentimental and unpretentious, as best evidenced in “Wild Feeling,” off 2011’s Mysterious Power: “I don’t see defeat or despair in the world/ I don’t see things that are not there in the world/ I’m just a kid without a care in the world all a-spin.”
Ryley Walker 5:45 p.m. Friday, No-Fi Cabin 9:15 p.m. Friday, Porch Stage One notable review for Walker’s sophomore album Primrose Green, which came out in March, hailed the Chicago musician’s instrumental virtuosity but docked the release considerably for a lack of singing chops. That’s sorta like dismissing Michael Jordan’s dunks because you don’t like his tongue hanging out. In other words, you’re not there for the singing. Walker’s vocals, indeed, serve as merely another colorful accompaniment to his finger-pickin’
digressions that veer his take on ’70s folk into drone, psychedelia and free jazz territory.
Wooden Indian Burial Ground 11:15 p.m. Friday, Porch Stage Personally, I prefer my psychedelia as wild, weird and raw as you can get. If you, likewise, find the Flaming Lips’ brand of psych too tame, head out of that set early to pursue this Portland garage outfit, whose spiraling surf and blues riffs, “yips” and “yawps,” and textural analog synths will leave you in a state of euphoric squalor.
Sarah Neufeld 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Main Stage The violinist’s output outside of her main gig with The Arcade Fire is more in line with the instrumental ambience of Tim Hecker or the classical minimal-
ism of Steve Reich than it is any of her indie rock contemporaries. Take the songs from Never Were the Way She Was, her release this year with saxophonist Colin Stetson. Each tune starts with a riff that builds in complexity as looping layers of melody are added, one atop another, until the thing grows in intricacy and power, like a slowly rising tornado off in the distance.
My Bubba 1:45 p.m. Saturday, Porch Stage 7:15 p.m. Saturday, No-Fi Cabin 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Main Stage Catch whichever performance you can, but my money’s on the No-Fi Cabin. The sparse setting should allow the Icelandic and Swedish duo’s Scandinavian folk songs and mesmerizing harmonies to dazzle even more brightly — sorta like the Northern Lights set against the barren wintry landscapes of their home countries.

than generically emotion-driven (“A woman’s heart it’s made of solid rock,” she sings on “The New SF Bay Blues”) and examining issues of race on “Everybody Knows (for Trayvon Martin),” a song penned in response to the controversial 2012 death of the unarmed black teenager. “People of color all over the country — especially black people — are really coming together and organizing and doing this brilliant activist work, and what musicians can do is amplify the work that is being done. We can get into peoples’ hearts and talk to them in a different way than Fox News is talking to them, and just bring a more human aspect to the whole thing,” she said. “I’m interested in people and … how we can improve conditions for people. That’s what has always excited me and what has always been interesting to me.” Segarra attributes her well-developed sense of empathy to a number of factors, including a New York City upbringing where she regularly interacted with folks from myriad backgrounds, and the experience of being raised by a father who was a veteran of the Vietnam War. “That put a very human perspective on everything,” Segarra said. “Being around someone you love so much and watching them heal after going to war as a young man, it reminds you that no matter who somebody is they might have this past and this struggle you don’t know about.” Growing up in New York, Segarra said she tended to identify with outsider perspectives, and even the band’s name — Hurray for the Riff Raff — was chosen to celebrate those displaced, overlooked and underserved populaces. “I’ve always found myself at the intersection of a lot of different worlds,” said Segarra, who is Puerto Rican and identifies as queer. “And I always felt that could be something really powerful with having a band and even being a public personality in general — no matter how small. With the internet now a teenage kid can find anybody, and if there’s even just a little bit of my confusing identity that makes them feel less alone, I just think that’s awesome.”

In “Don’t Think I’ve Forgotten” director John Pirozzi delves into the history of 1960s and 1970s Cambodian rock ’n’ roll, an era of music history that was all but erased from existence with the 1975 arrival of the Khmer Rouge, which ruled the country for four years and orchestrated a genocide that resulted in the deaths of 1.7 million Cambodians. Yet, somehow, the music survived, a fact Cambodia native Mol Kagnol attributed to the deep, immediate connection Cambodians felt with the art form. “That question [of how the music survived] has come up before, but I didn’t have a good answer until my recent reflection back to those days,” said Kagnol, guitarist and founding member of Baksey Cham Krong, generally recognized as Cambodia’s first surf-rock guitar band. “After the first show [Baksey Cham Krong played] on TV, the next day I saw a bunch of kids on the sidewalk in front of my house playing with a broomstick and pretending it was a guitar. The Khmer Rouge couldn’t kill that. [The music] got too deep into the people.” Pirozzi’s interest in the subject stretches back to 2001, when he spent three months living in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh while work-
ing as a camera operator on the Matt Dillon-directed “City of Ghosts.” “You could feel something in the air, like it had been a much different city before the war,” the director said in a recent phone interview (Pirozzi’s documentary screens at the Wexner Center Thursday and Friday, May 28 and 29). “Then when I heard the music [via the 2000 compilation Cambodian Rocks], there were so many different styles and the quality was so high that I knew right away that there must have been an amazing scene here.” Part historical document, part celebration of a nearly lost form, “Don’t Think I’ve Forgotten” manages to strike a delicate balance between depicting the brutality of the Khmer’s reign and the liveliness of the scene that preceded its arrival. “The severity of what happened there needed to come through, and at the same time I wanted to end with a note of — not hopefulness — but certainly you get some sense the music survived,” Pirozzi said. “And that’s a positive thing ultimately. It’s something Cambodians still access and cherish and connect with. I don’t think too many people are singing the Khmer Rouge National Anthem anymore. Hopefully the film is a testament to the strength of the music, and to the resilience of the Cambodian people.”

The Decemberists’ long-awaited new album, What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World, reflects, as the title suggests, singer-songwriter Colin Meloy’s recent ups and downs. The four years between that album and its predecessor (2011’s The King is Dead) might be a further reflection of Meloy’s recent high-points. Without the pressures of music label deadlines, the band was unhurried in recording its new album, which gave Meloy time to devote to his latest endeavor: writing the “Wildwood Chronicles” children’s books with his wife, Carson Ellis, at their Portland, Oregon farm house. “Over the past four or five years, my perspective has shifted, my priorities have shifted. We’re in a position where we can slow down production a little bit. I’ve also sold another couple of books
who
and that’s a big part of what I want to do. I think this might be the new regime,” Meloy told The Guardian. That time off, however, hasn’t dulled the band’s uber-literate pop/indie acoustic sound, which still mimics Meloy’s album collection of the late ’60s and early ’80s,

why you should go Jamar Rolando McNaughton, aka Chronixx, has been touring throughout Europe since his first EP, Hooked on Chronixx. His newest album, The Dread & Terrible Project, topped both the Billboard and iTunes reggae charts with the tracks, “Rastaman Wheel Out” and “Here Comes Trouble.” The Jamaican native brings a unique energy to the stage that never fails to get the crowd immersed in his soulful voice. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a tour, including this Rumba stop that’ll see the band play its debut, self-titled album in full. OG breakersof-the-internet, Clap Your Hands self-released its 2005 debut but quickly sold-out of the first run after popular mp3 blogs and Pitchfork posted favorable reviews, which led to artists like David Byrne attending early shows. Don’t expect Byrne at this go-round, but do expect old favorites like “The Skin of my Yellow Teeth.” Ohio native Adam Torres first popped up on the indie scene in Athens with his band Southeast Engine. It was his 2006 solo effort, Nostra Nova, that went on to achieve cult status, however. With a folk sound indebted to his Appalachian roots and intellectually stimulating lyrics, Nostra Nova was recently re-issued via Misra, and Torres will appear here playing cuts from this under-heard classic.

By Andy Downing // @andydowning33 Photo by Meghan Ralston
Joshua James, singer-songwriter for Yellow Paper Planes, discusses the folk-rock quartet’s debut EP, Feather’s Touch, like a contractor leading clients through a massive home remodeling project. “We stripped everything back to the studs,” said James, 33, who joins bandmates Brandon Woods (drums), Peter Mendenhall (bass) and Jeremy Ebert (keyboard/guitar) for a concert at Tree Bar on Friday, May 29. “I’m a person who can think things into the ground, and I had all this time to think about what we were writing and I wasn’t liking any of it, so we stripped everything back and started to have a deeper discussion about what we wanted [the band] to sound like.” In the past, Yellow Paper Planes existed as a means for James to flesh out his solo material, but going into recording the frontman wanted to place less emphasis on “strummy acoustic rhythm guitar,” as he termed it, allowing the songs to develop more organically into full-group affairs. “I didn’t want it to come across like a singersongwriter backed by a band,” said James, who was born in Bolivar to a welder father and a mother who taught first grade. Rather, songs like the open-ended “Knock Once,”

a prairie vista of shuffling drums and creeping guitar, and the hypnotic “Ghost,” which builds around a buzzing, mossy guitar riff, feel as though they could shift amoeba-like in any direction rather than adhering to a prescribed path. While Yellow Paper Planes’ music has steadily evolved into a band pursuit, James’ lyrics have grown increasingly personal, with songs born of a recent health scare and the fears and excitements tied to life as a new father. “Trying to cut down on my cursing,” he sings on “Knock Once.” “Fix the things that made me broke so the shape I’m in doesn’t worsen.” Brian Rasic photo

I had some moments where I felt kind of broken for a while,” said James, who received his earliest musical education via campfire sing-alongs alongside his father, an avowed fan of classic country artists like Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings. “When I was first getting out in front of people I was writing about things that were at arm’s length. Now I’m writing about stuff that’s closer to the vest, and it feels good to get my story out there.”

The Rolling Stones With the Rolling Stones getting set to visit Ohio Stadium on Saturday, May 30, we thought we’d take a closer look at the numbers. 70.5: the average age of the band’s four core members, including singer Mick Jagger (71), guitarist Keith Richards (71), drummer Charlie Watts (73) and guitarist Ronnie Wood (a pup at 67). 60,000: the capacity of Ohio Stadium for the open-air concert. 84 and 58: the projected high and low temperatures for Saturday. 60: the percentage chance of rain on Saturday. 40: for the optimistic, the percentage chance it will not rain. 12: years since the Horseshoe
hosted its last concert (Metallica in 2003). 1997: the year the Rolling Stones last performed at the venue. 20: the number of songs the Stones performed during a tour-opening stop at Petco Park in San Diego on May 24, including shopworn classics like “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” “Gimme Shelter” and “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” 4: songs the band performed off the 1971 album Sticky Fingers, which receives the deluxe reissue treatment in June and is expected to form the backbone of this stadium tour. Incalculable: the odds the Rolling Stones will ever again perform in Columbus (never say never, but if you hope to see the band in this lifetime you might want to make it to Saturday’s show). —Andy Downing

& tHe Howlin’ moons Exhaustive gigging — Howlin’ Moons logged in excess of 120 shows last year — has sharpened and tightened the band’s sound, though it still retained a bit of roadhouse swagger on “Roll On Over,” which revved like a muscle car engine, and “Blue Eyed Lola,” which briefly conjured images of a loping, backwoods hootenanny. On “Athens,” Perley sang of boarding a train as the quartet launched into an extended jam that was nearly as slow to come to a stop as one of the rumbling metal behemoths. Elsewhere, however, songs tended to be more manicured. Such was the case on “Howlin’ at the Moon,” which was more sedated than its feral-animal title, building around quicksilver riffs courtesy of guitarist Chris Connor, and “Dangerous Love,” a gorgeous new song that held at a low boil. “Your Love” gave off a similar heat, nearly matching the output of the venue’s namesake coal-fired pizza oven. Even “Hurricane,” which featured stage lights that crackled like heat lightning, sounded somewhat mellower than its recorded version — less sneering and more simmering.

Near the close of Angela Perley & the Howlin’ Moons’ sold-out performance at Natalie’s Coal-Fired Pizza on a recent Sunday, the singer eased into a solo version of “Down and Drunk,” a depressive tune where the narrator compares him or herself with “a Kansas tornado, destroying everything I see” and struggles to find the joy in life. “Beauty doesn’t mean anything to me,” Perley crooned, stretching out atop nothing more than lazily strummed electric guitar. The down-and-out cut stood in stark contrast to a pair of lush new tunes, which, adorned with heart palpitating titles like “Your Love” and “Dangerous Love,” found the bandmates staking out far more hopeful territory. It’s fitting, too, considering the Howlin’ Moons’ banner year, which saw the musicians crisscrossing the country in support of Hey Kid, from 2013, and even playing a Record Store Day gig where the Foo Fighters served as the surprise opening act (true, Dave Grohl and Co. performed a few hours prior to the band, but, still, it counts!).

he Creative Arts of Women (CAW) collective regularly organizes group exhibitions where many of its members show exciting and often powerful works of art, but the group’s exhibition “Remnants” at the OSU Urban Arts Space is one these women are particularly proud of. The exhibit’s origins date back over a year, when three members (Allison Buenger, April Sunami and Barb Vogel) crafted a proposal summoning artists to re-purpose used and/or discarded materials in creating new works of visual art, installations and performance. But that was only part of the challenge.
Photo transfers on wood by J Clark
As the organization of “Remnants” progressed, the group saw the multi-room Urban Arts Space as an opportunity. The group was already having collective discussions and that particular gallery’s setting inspired the 43 participating artists to push themselves by stepping outside their traditional artistic practice. For some this meant working much larger, or with new materials and processes. For others, it meant reassessing artistic philosophies and even working
in mediums they hadn’t previously. “We used it as a challenge to broaden the scope of people’s artwork. It’s also to be able to do [a large] piece they may have envisioned, but would have never had a place to show. So we approached it as an opportunity, not as a burden — we have to fill this space,” said Catherine Bell Smith, a CAW member on the steering committee, of exhibiting in the downtown gallery. “We dare to challenge each other and accept that challenge. It’s
a little intimidating … to break out of [your normal practice] … but only in this kind of accepting environment would any one of us feel safe to push ourselves and go beyond our normal parameters.” Many CAW artists took this challenge to daunting levels. A prime example is Heidi Madsen, a performance artist who created her first visual piece, a multifaceted installation — suitcases adorned with medical gloves that have negative terms written on them, tiny

freedom and the willingness of artists to push themselves. I’m an experienced exhibitor, but this is the first time I’ve had this real level of excitement,” George said. For Sunami, the repurposing material approach is something that’s been present in her work for a while, so she decided to address “Remnants” with a personally conceptual approach. “I wanted to use the vocabulary of subjects I’m familiar with to explore other ideas. The piece in ‘Remnants’ operates on two levels, spirituality and faith and the other talks about race. These are two things I don’t normally address in my work — on some level my work is about race and identity, but it’s very subtle,” Sunami said. “On some level I wanted to approach [it] by being very respectful of all the faiths I’m drawing from … but I also wanted to push myself artistically and say what I want to say. So I decided to go beyond the material and think about what remnants mean to me, philosophically.” Not surprisingly, Buenger, who coauthored the proposal and will display an installation referencing the complicated history of Dresden, Germany, encapsulates ideology behind both CAW as a group and “Remnants” as an exhibition. “Exhibiting with CAW is a really good opportunity to do something within your style and your own artistic voice, but challenge yourself to try something new, experiment or push the boundaries of your practice because you’re not doing a whole solo show. It’s an opportunity to delve into a new area,” Buenger said. “One of the things I respect about all the CAW members is they bring their A-game every time. It’s important to exhibit new and exciting work, and everyone seems so hungry for that.”

red socks inscribed with positive notes sutured to a dress, and a door of reflection — as well as a video. Madsen will also have a performance during the opening reception May 30. “I’m really passionate about [the work I do with HIV/AIDS assistance programs] and have been doing it for 15 years. I thought about how there’s no cure, but there is a way to heal from the remnants of the test results. My whole performance, installation and video is all based on the effect of stigma; simply the fact that we can choose to be hurtful in ways, and that we can choose not to be,” Madsen said. “One way to spread inclusion and accepting people for who they are is through empathy. A cliché way of talking about empathy is walking in someone else’s shoes. There are things going on in the world and if they don’t affect you or shape you — like HIV — it’s just a thing out there where there’s no reason to think about it. So it’s key to have some form of education … to help understand. Basically I call it, walking softly in someone else’s socks.” Janet George is another CAW member who was inspired by the “Remnants” challenge. George created her largest piece to date, using an entirely new material — a fabric hanging to which viewers can add their own elements and mementos. The finished product will be displayed at the Northside Neighborhood Pride Center after “Remnants” closes. While George is pleased with her new undertaking and its community-driven purpose, it’s the group’s energy she finds most rewarding. “The excitement didn’t come so much through the process, but during the installation and watching the artists install their [pieces]. Why you’ll love it:
Why you’ll love it:
“In many places there’s still plenty of wildness,” Joshua Butts declares in a poem from his debut collection, “New to the Lost Coast.” These poems locate wildness at home and away, in lawns, scrap yards, Southern Ohio roads and rivers. Butts is a poet of wry humor, insight and the ability to see the strangeness in our routines and hometowns. Read “New to the Lost Coast,” and I promise you’ll want to explore its weirdly welcoming places.
See for yourself:

There is an Island on which women reign and men are beautiful playthings trained for domesticity. All the women look like Angelina Jolie, and the men get penile tattoos, grow up playing with Boberto dolls and earn lesser wages than women. Nin Andrews’ newest collection of poems sends us dispatches from this Island from the point of view of one of its men. Astonishingly brilliant and subversive, Andrews feeds us prose poems that feel equal parts cultural anthropology, mythology and invented personal history.
See for yourself:
“E
ven foreigners who consider themselves immune to desire cannot look upon the Island men without feeling a pang in the back of their throats and deep in their groins. But beauty has its price tag. Island men are often stalked, harassed, and picked up by strangers in dark vans … As a consequence the men are terrified.” —from “On the Island where I come from,” p. 32

It’s obvious that process is imperative to Burke’s art — and has resulted in some extraordinary pieces like “Sea Hedgehog (pictured) — and that’s true of her performance “Disease (4,320 steps) and its documentation through installation. Burke traversed 4,320 steps — in reference to (sage) Joseph Campbell’s theories on the importance of the number 432, and its Fibonacci-like repetition among many diverse cultures and mythologies — over a nine-foot (4+3+2=9) piece of paper covered in coal. Done at the site of the 1930 Millfield Mine Disaster near Nelsonville, it’s referencing humanity’s complicated relationship with nature, especially fossil fuels. Burke documents her “intense twohour performance with photography (by Rebecca Copper) and coal piled upon the nine-foot paper. It’s a powerful and complex presentation, indicative of much of the work in the exhibit. “Bound is up through June 27 with a reception on the 26th. Burke will be at the gallery 5-9 p.m. Friday, May 29 if you’d like to speak with her about the exhibit. You will.

This is why we can’t have nice things. As someone who sees, like, all the movies (not really, but a lot of them), seeing summer box office numbers is usually disheartening, because the safest bets usually win, which means the risky, less-marketable, more-original movies often lose (see: “Tomorrowland”). This is why we get sequels and reboots and movies that might as well be a reboot. “San Andreas” is in that last category, a throwback disaster movie chock full of special effects and clichés. Given the massive loss of humanity depicted here, you’d think it would make you actually feel something. Dwayne Johnson (aka The Rock) plays Ray, a Los Angeles Fire Department rescue chopper pilot who has saved hundreds of lives through his daring maneuvers and “just doing my job” attitude. His teenage daughter Blake (Alexandra Daddario) is heading to college. His soon-to-be-ex-wife Emma (Carla Gugino) is moving in with a new man, though Ray still burns the torch for her. Don’t worry. After we get that requisite family setup, things start shaking when a massive earthquake hits the Hoover Dam. It’s the first in a series of massive quakes, giving Ray ample opportunity to save his family in dramatic fashion.
So, before I get the “you don’t get dumb action” criticism of my criticism of this movie, I’d like to remind you that I love “Twister.” Dumb action is not my problem with “San Andreas.” My problem is how much it tries to have a heart and how poorly it works on that level. Ray and Emma have the estranged exes angle that works so great in “Die Hard,” and upon their inevitable reunion, it turns into a parental quest to save a child. This ends up just being a thin skeleton to show off the latest in destruction effects — which admittedly are pretty impressive. The problem is how often they veer into ridiculousness. That showing off has strangely removed all sense of awe, leading me to wonder exactly when video games started being more realistic than action movies. Dwayne Johnson does his thang. You know what you’re getting. It’s also a little troubling, in this summer of strong female leads, that we get a double-dip of the damsel in distress trope, and that Daddario (“True Detective”) is the recipient of more than a few leering, bouncy cleavage shots. “San Andreas” isn’t a remake, but it’s familiar enough that it might as well be. It’s a safe bet for the destruction-porn crowd, so it’ll probably make a lot of money. This is why we can’t have nice things.

By Brad Keefe @bradalive “Their original intent was to make a movie, not manage a band. And they ended up doing both.” That statement comes from Pete Townshend about Chris Stamp and Kit Lambert. The band in question, obviously, would become The Who. The documentary “Lambert & Stamp” is ostensibly about the men who would become managers of one of the world’s great rock bands. It’s also about the band, of course, and the cultural state of ’60s London and whatnot. Therein lies the problem. With an interesting topic and a wealth of truly amazing file footage, “Lambert & Stamp” manages to be so unfocused it becomes for hardcore fans only.

Perhaps the issue is that Lambert and Stamp are obviously less known than Townshend and Roger Daltrey. There are more than a few great anecdotes and sound bites from those two. “I didn’t want to be in a band until I was 61,” Townshend says. “I wanted to be in a band
for a couple years.” But band anecdotes often feel tangential. There’s a meandering thread about Lambert being a homosexual at a time in which that was outright illegal in London as well, but this shotgun approach turns a potentially great doc into an odd salad.

The latest from Cameron Crowe (“Almost Famous,” “Say Anything”) features a great cast (Bradley Cooper, Rachel McAdams, Emma Stone and more), but the fact that it wasn’t screened for critics has me nervous.

Brad Bird’s poorly marketed Disney movie is already being labeled a flop, but I found it full of imagination and optimism. Give it a shot before it flies out of theaters. ( )

“Lambert & Stamp”
The mix of footage from the rise of The Who (and before) and presentday interviews with most of the key figures (Lambert died in 1981) should be a winning combination for a rock doc, but this one just can’t decide what it’s actually about — even with the subjects in the title.

tepping into Mojo Tago in Powell, I thought “I’ve seen this all before.” There was the menu promising craft beers plus inexpensive and fun, taco truck-style food spun into “fusion cuisine.” There was the splashy atmosphere, the rock-and-roll soundtrack and the branding puns. The overall implicit promise is: Nothing will be taken too seriously here, except a commitment that patrons will be entertained and fed well on the cheap. Walking past Mojo’s to-go counter — which mimics the facade of a taco truck (and so echoes Mojo’s meals-on-wheels genesis) — I settled into a repurposed church pew seat. I smiled at the reclaimed wood, tangerine walls, naked light bulbs, drink specials written on a butcher paper roll and cabana-style bar with TVs beaming ESPN. Then I steeled myself for what I’ve practically come to expect from kitschy, Mexican-esque restaurants — wonky and sugary cocktails plus notserved-hot tacos. I didn’t get that. In a happy turn of events, Mojo kept most of its promises. A mango habanero margarita special ($9) was focused and refreshing. The fresh lime and Cointreau-driven house margarita (Mojorita, $7) was even better. For a kick, try it with jalapeno-infused tequila ($1 upcharge).

is one of the better local renditions of the Baja mainstay. Its crunchy beer batter makes it a winner. Freshness, cabbage and a rich-yet-spicy “tomatillo arbol crema” make it a champion. Mojo’s warm, juicy and tender carnitas are filled with pulled pork sporting a little griddled crispness. Cinnamon, grilled pineapple chunks and a barbecue-type sauce lend it enjoyable Caribbean accents. My veggie taco was the only outright disappointment. It wasn’t awful — I appreciated its sautéed onions and peppers and queso fresco. But with unseasoned black beans as a main component, it was terminally bland. Since opening on April 19, Mojo’s offerings have been pared down to just tacos (its online menu still lists soups and small plates). But if you ask, Mojo will gladly make you a quesadilla ($8) or bowl ($7) with any taco protein. Based on the on-target chicken quesadilla (seared meat chunks, garlic, fresh lime, avocado, melted cheese and spicy pico) and the aggressive Korean BBQ bowl (sliced fresh romaine, fluffy cilantro rice, flavorful meat, pickled onions and black beans), I’d say they’re solid options. The same could be said about Mojo. Though hardly a “destination restaurant,” if you’re near Powell and are seeking a place that won’t break its promises of fun food and good drinks, Mojo is a solid choice.
a-list
From the chips and salsa selection ($2-$3 each; chips come in brown paper bags), the punny “Macheesmo” is decent queso dip. Mojo’s limebrightened, garlicky, creamy and pleasant “avocado salsa” doesn’t call itself guacamole, so it has a semantic alibi for not being chunky or including cilantro. Other members of the worthy dip bunch are the tangy, thick and punchy tomatillo salsa and the fruity, garlicky and tingly house tomato. All tacos are $3 and arrive doublewrapped in warm and good, locally made Koki’s soft corn tortillas. Expect plenty of fillings and flavor, if not much nuance. Mojo’s obvious influences from the prominent L.A. mobile food movement (itself a result of Southern California’s melting pot culture) pop up often. For instance, Mojo’s Korean BBQ tacos riff on similar snacks made famous by Roy Choi and his Kogi BBQ taco trucks. Mojo’s version pits potent pickled onions against chunks of seared, tender beef drenched in a (bulgogi-like) sweet, slightly spicy and salty, soy sauce-based marinade. Cabbage adds ballast plus funky, raw contrast. The amusingly named Kung Powell Shrimp likewise hybridizes Asian and Mexican flavors. A trio of small shrimp bathed in a spicy and tangy sauce arrives covered in crushed peanuts. They’re OK. But the Classic Ensenada Fish taco

qualities, though. First off, I liked the boasted ABV for a wit. It’s a bold choice, and doesn’t seem to affect the beer’s crispness and drinkability. Thus, the Wit Fit would be a solid choice for summer — if it weren’t for that overpowering bitterness. I understand what this recipe was going for. I just think it goes too far. But for those who enjoy a hoppy IPA, but want something more refreshing — I can’t recommend the Wit Fit more.

Mikkeller is one of those breweries that’s never done me wrong, and while I don’t want to be too harsh on the Danish brewery’s Wit Fit, I was disappointed. With Mikkeller I generally have high expectations — even when they put weasel poop (coffee beans) in their beer I’m excited about it — and that’s justified. It’s a celebrated brewery that’s consistently trying new approaches, styles and recipes that keep them at the top. The Wit Fit, an imperial wit (6.2 ABV) brewed with spices, most likely coriander, and citrus flavors, is designed as a crisp summer beer. Given the moniker, I’m not sure if Mikkeller is going for some sort of Michelob Ultra, beer-for-athletic-types thing, but the Wit Fit is clearly meant to be refreshing. The Wit Fit is available in four-pack cans, and is brewed and canned by Sly Fox Brewing Company in Pennsylvania. Now, one could say I found the Wit Fit disappointing because it’s not actually brewed by Mikkeller, but Sly Fox has a strong reputation — and it’s earned the trust of Mikkeller. So why was I dissatisfied? Well, to put it simply, it was too bitter and a touch too dry. While I can get down with a bitter beer, this one was too much — and not in a way that falls in line with a wit. I wanted a flavor profile that highlighted the spices, hops and yeast components equally. Here it was mainly a strong hoppy flavor coursing over everything, and all of a wit’s sweeter notes were overwhelmed. There were a couple of admirable
