THE 2018-19 THEME, Y(our) Story, was chosen by the senior leaders because they recognized the uniqueness of their class. In fact, Jenise Gordon, Head of Upper School, said, “If ever there was a class that marches to the beat of their own drum, it is your class.” The theme acknowledges and celebrates who they are—more than 80 individuals with different and distinct personalities, strengths, weaknesses, and passions who together make up one unique, beautiful group. But how to best communicate this idea of individuality and yet present a message that conveys the cohesiveness of the Class of 2019 and the GPS student body as a whole? While brainstorming ideas for the year’s theme, Molly Milam ’19 considered how people are similar to colors in that everyone is unique but can complement those around her. “While all colors are amazing on their own, together they’re extraordinary,” she said. “No color would be the same without the others.”

HEAD OF SCHOOL: DR. AUTUMN A. GRAVES ONE OF THE UNIQUE FEATURES THAT DEFINES US AS INDIVIDUALS IS OUR STORY. Our personal journey. Our own path however complicated, winding, rocky, or serene. So when the Class of 2019 met to determine the theme of our school year, the senior leaders chose to embrace “Y(our) Story,” realizing that each has a story as unique and special as they are that also contributes to the ongoing 113-year-old narrative of our school. As has been a tradition for more than a century, each senior shared a chapter of her own story during her Chapel Talk. This rite of passage offers a moment for her to boldly own her story and share it with our GPS community. I am always amazed at the composure and professionalism that each possesses, standing in front of her peers, teachers, and guests in Frierson Theatre. Because the senior class has left its mark collectively and individually at GPS, we capture their Chapel Talks in a bound collection and gift it to them during their senior dinner—a memento of their stories and GPS journey. Each GPS girl’s story—begun at our school and then continued in college and life—is made possible by the hundreds of friends who donate to our school via our Impact Fund. Among the lists of our donors, in this issue we profile four generous individuals along with the Class of 1969, who in honor of their 50th reunion last spring, donated more than any other 50th reunion class to date. Read about their generosity on page 46. Others profiled are people like you, who give because they believe in the power of an all-girls education and the opportunities found only at GPS. Two are GPS alumnae; three are parents of GPS girls. All have experienced firsthand what happens when girls are loved, challenged, and told that the options for women today are limitless. I hope their stories inspire you to continue to give to our school in support of all we do for girls. You’ll also read some success stories about events we host each year. Bruiser Bee, our signature fundraiser, adopted a trivia challenge this year, much to the delight of those in attendance. That evening remains one of my favorite memories of my time here. When we introduced the paddle raise, to solicit donations to improve some spaces on our campus, I was brought to tears by the response. By the end of the evening, more than $100K was pledged to give our student center “The Ben” a facelift as well as provide a space for our teachers to relax and engage with each other. See page 49 for photos of the results of these gifts. Our entrepreneurial summit for girls, MBD: Girl Edition, offered two opportunities for girls across the Chattanooga and North Georgia region to come to GPS and experience what happens when girls are challenged in a supportive environment. In only a few hours, the girls made more than $10K in sales at our Holiday Marketplace. During the 24Hour Generator, 50 girls worked together to brainstorm and formulate ideas to solve real-world business scenarios. I urge you to become involved in this initiative as a mentor, a chaperone, or a financial partner. I believe we are showing girls the power in believing in themselves while working with others. Read more on page 52. As head of school, I appreciate every day what your belief in GPS means to each girl, her teachers, her coaches, and those who support our efforts behind the scenes. Please join us for a sporting event, a performance of the arts, or any special event that draws you to our campus. I think you’ll be astounded by what happens at a school where everything begins and ends with what is best for girls. Here’s to the GIRLS!

CHIEF DEVELOPMENT OFFICER: ALI GANT

RECENTLY, AN ALUMNA watched GPS’s social media post from opening day. The video on Instagram showed the entire sea of girls in Frierson Theatre, clad in their colorful dresses and grouped by grades, flush with excitement about a new year. Together they sang “Dancing Queen” loudly, happily—and honestly—surprisingly beautifully for all having been born three decades after the song was released! The friend watching the video messaged me: “I feel like this video is a decoder pen to my life. It explains so much about who I am as a person.” That’s it—right there—the “special sauce” of GPS. The ties that bind. The faces might change, the world has certainly changed, and some things at the school have changed to meet 21st-century learning expectations. But myriad traditions remain the same. These foundational touchpoints are what I hope you will remember when asked to give to Girls Preparatory School. The Class of 2019 chose “Y(our) Story” as the theme of the 2018-19 school year. The wordsmith in me loves how OUR is part of the word YOUR; it so clearly illustrates how we at GPS are the sum of many individual experiences. And this is why we are all thankful to each of you listed in this report for making GPS part of your story—whether you attended here; your mother, wife, sister, daughter, or granddaughter is a GPS girl; or you have a passion for what a GPS education provides girls in our area. Perhaps you fall into more than one category! I joined GPS in June of 2019, just as the year we are reporting on closed out. I had the pleasure of coming on board to quickly announce that our Development team had surpassed the Impact Fund goal of $1.1M for the 2018-19 fiscal year. I would especially like to thank Bilda Acuña Small for serving as Interim Director of Development and Lisa Reynolds Shanahan ’83, Director of Impact Fund, for their tireless leadership and hard work to make the goal a reality. As the new Chief Development Officer, I’m personally thrilled to be working to share the benefits of an all-girls’ education, a topic about which I’m very passionate. My family is excited to be in Chattanooga (back to Chattanooga for my husband, McCallie Class of 1997), and I am humbled and honored to make GPS part of my own story. In the coming years, I hope you will continue to participate as a donor at whatever level matches your giving goals. Each donor matters and every gift to GPS—small and large— matters. We are grateful that you include us in your story. All the best,

Ali Gant Chief Development Officer

SUPPORT SUZANNE AND GLENN MORRIS

G

lenn and Suzanne Morris are veteran soccer parents. Their daughter Sydney ’21 has played her entire GPS career, winning Best of Preps last year. But one of their proudest moments happened recently when she was pulled from the game. Not just Sydney, but all the starters actually, after GPS secured a strong lead and Coach Patrick Winecoff sent in the second team.

SYDNEY MORRIS ’21

“The starters became the largest cheer section in the whole stadium, calling girls by name whenever they made a good play,” recalls Glenn. “All of a sudden it was like the team gained 20 cheerleaders. I can’t tell you what it was like to see them. It demonstrates what an amazing culture GPS has. You don’t see that everywhere.” This feeling is one of the many reasons the Morrises generously support GPS. “We’re big believers in a singlesex education, where girls can be girls and grow and flourish in that environment,” says Suzanne. “They’re challenged in different ways by people who understand them and teachers who know them on a personal level.” Glenn’s ties to the school go back to the early ’60s, when his oldest sister asked their parents if she could attend GPS. Their dad was starting his own company and explained there wasn’t any possible way their family could afford it. He promised her if she worked hard, he would send her to any college of her choice, which ended up being a small, all-girls school. By the time Glenn was old enough for middle school in 1976, their family’s finances had changed, and he was able to attend McCallie for six years. “I know it broke my dad’s heart to not be able to send my sister to GPS,” he recalls. “I’ve always been touched by that story and believe it’s worth trying to help other families send their girls to GPS, as well as do all I can to help keep GPS strong, making it a dream for another little girl.” When it was time for their older daughter, Emma ’16, to decide on schools, the Morrises were not necessarily locked into GPS. That is, until an impromptu school tour during a Potential Parent Breakfast. Suzanne fell ill during

the event and had to leave, so Glenn took the tour alone. He happened to pass by former Bible teacher Jane Henegar’s room as she was helping a student with her college essay. There was a level of warmth and attentiveness that struck him.

“I hadn’t had that feeling since I was at McCallie—a teacher finding a way to reach you,” he says. “I don’t think I even realized it at the time how much these teachers are looking at each individual student and always asking, ‘What’s it going to take to bring this girl or guy to their full potential?’” Today Emma is pursuing her political science degree at Auburn University with plans for law school. Sydney has aspirations of being an engineer and enjoys her time in YoungLife. “Thanks to GPS our girls are prepared to lead and to lead confidently no matter what they’re doing,” says Suzanne. Of course, GPS is not the only organization the Morrises support. In addition to Glenn’s being a trustee at McCallie, they give to the Ronald McDonald House, OnPoint, Chattanooga Area Food Bank, Bible in the Schools, First Things First, American Heart Association, Bethany Children’s Services, Lifeline Children’s Services, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, and Auburn University School of Nursing, where Suzanne is an alumna. Each organization they support has to align with their core values and biblical principles. And while their contributions to the community are admirable, they humbly insist that their philanthropic role in Chattanooga is comparatively small. “We’re happy to play a part, but I know so many people who give with more passion or shine more brightly than me, whether that’s through their gifts of time, money, or vocation,” says Glenn. “I see us as members of a team sport, all trying to make Chattanooga a better place. We’re just honored to be on the team.” Whether they see themselves as starters or not, their support of GPS impacts girls today and in the future.

Young Leadership Giving Society The YLGS is a new Giving Circle specifically designed to offer young alumnae the opportunity to pool their gifts to support a specific project or area of work at GPS. In the 2018-19 school year, we were grateful for their support in purchasing new equipment for our weight room. This enhances our strength and conditioning program, which is geared toward helping Bruisers build strength, improve performance, speed recovery, and avoid injuries.

S

ince second grade Jeanne Scanland ’74 has had only one career aspiration—to become a surgeon. Never wavering from that dream, each Christmas and birthday she would ask for money for medical school, depositing it in the savings account she opened at age 5 with Scotty Probasco at American National Bank. As she got older, she worked every summer and while in college to contribute to her nest egg. There was just one problem with her plan; there had never been a female surgeon in Chattanooga before. “I can’t really explain how I was so certain at such an early age; I just knew it was what I was supposed to do,” she says. “Everyone told me that it wasn’t possible because I was a girl, and that I’d have to be a nurse instead.”

Fortunately, Scanland’s parents supported her dream. At a time when very few women worked outside of the home, Scanland’s mother was an attorney and judge. Her father was a mechanical engineer with a Ph.D., and they both believed that education could help their daughter accomplish her goals. When it came time for middle school, there was never any doubt they would send her to GPS. Scanland credits the experience with preparing her for medical school, exposing her to courses not typically available to girls at that time such as calculus, biology, physics, and chemistry. More importantly, GPS taught her a love of learning and how to become a self-directed learner. 18

Dr. Jeanne Scanland, in pink, with her fellow Chattanooga plastic surgeons.

“The two most important things I learned were how to study and how to think independently,” she says. “Once you become a self-learner you can do anything. There are no limitations.”

visiting an art gallery in Japan. She is once again grateful for the well-rounded education she received at GPS, particularly in music and Ms. Thompson’s art history classes.

Scanland has embodied this in her career, continually breaking down barriers for women in medicine. She was one of a handful of women in her medical school and the first female in the six-year general surgery residency at Erlanger Hospital. During this training, 127-hour work weeks were common and there were weeks she wouldn’t even go home.

“I wish every girl who wanted to go to GPS could have that opportunity,” she says. “I feel like I have been so blessed, I want to make sure I return my blessings to someone else.”

She went on to pursue a two-year plastic surgery residency, also at Erlanger, and became Chattanooga’s first and only female board-certified plastic surgeon and held that distinction for 25 years within a 150-mile radius. She then completed cosmetic and breast reconstruction fellowships at three major medical centers in the South. To this day, she remains the only plastic surgeon in the region to have completed these fellowships. All told, Scanland’s post-secondary education and training spanned 13 years. And while she credits the love and support of her parents and community, she managed to pay her own way through medical school through savings, two partial scholarships, and a student loan from the same man who opened her first savings account. Scanland continues to be a lifelong learner; these days at a more leisurely pace. With a passion for art and design, she is always seeking opportunities to deepen her understanding, whether it’s taking architecture classes in Paris or

Scanland has certainly done her part. For many years she would quietly pay girls’ tuition out of her own pocket. Her only requirement was that they loved the school. To further these efforts, she started the Boyd and Opal Scanland Memorial Scholarship in 1997 in memory of her parents. She also served as a trustee for many years under former headmaster Randy Tucker. Medical causes are also close to her heart, believing everyone deserves good healthcare. She is a former member of UNICEF’s southeast regional board and the local Red Cross chapter, and has served on surgical and medical committees at nearly every hospital in town. Through the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Medical Society’s Project Access, Scanland has provided countless hours of free medical care. For years she oversaw the weekly Plastic Surgery Residents Clinic at Erlanger Hospital, which provided free care for indigent patients needing treatment or reconstruction (or both) due to burns, diseases, cancer, or trauma. She taught the plastic surgery residents how to care for these patients and how to do their surgeries. Scanland also helps others learn by allowing

students of all ages—residents, nurses, and even fellow doctors—to do clinical rotations with her. Of all the investments Scanland has made throughout her life, GPS remains one of the most promising. “A gift to GPS not only changes our community but the whole world,” she says. “Our graduates are going all over now, bringing what they learned at GPS with them. I truly believe these women will be the providers, leaders, and changers of our world for the better.”

Scanland credits GPS for preparing her for a lifetime of learning. After graduating from GPS, she went on to complete 17 more years of education and training. • Undergraduate: University of Tennessee Chattanooga, BS in Chemistry, magna cum laude • Medical school: University of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences in Memphis • General Surgery Residency, UT College of Medicine, Erlanger Hospital • Plastic Surgery Residency, UT College of Medicine, Erlanger Hospital • Cosmetic and Breast Reconstruction Fellowships at Emory University and St. Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta; Baptist Hospital in Nashville; and University of Alabama in Birmingham 19

What it means to be

A GPS GIRL

On the GPS campus, every day you will see our values personified by each student—how she conducts herself, how she interacts with her classmates and teachers, and how she holds herself to a standard of excellence.

HONOR

CURIOSITY

At GPS, girls develop strong character; they learn to take responsibility for their own actions and understand the importance of keeping their word.

At GPS, each girl is encouraged to be curious about the world around her by asking questions, challenging assumptions, and thinking critically.

RESPECT

INDIVIDUALITY

At GPS, self-respect and respect for others go hand in hand; girls treat each other as they would like to be treated and learn to embrace their differences.

At GPS, each student is unique, loved for who she is and for whom she has the potential to become.

RELATIONSHIPS

At GPS, friendships are built to last a lifetime, and respect and support are at the core of every relationship among students, faculty, and staff.

INFLUENTIAL GIVING REAPS REWARDS

J

ulie Betts Brandao ’84 still has a photograph from her seventh grade Cat-Rat pairing. She proudly displays her GPS diploma in her office, and she even wore her May Day dress to a Halloween party a few years ago. To say her roots at GPS run deep is an understatement. Brandao’s two sisters, Katherine Betts ’76 and Summer Betts Booker ’80, and two daughters are also Bruisers. Because of this rich heritage, countless fond memories, and lifelong friendships, Brandao gives back. “GPS has always been a part of my family, and I was taught early on that you give back to things that mean something to your heart,” she says. Her parents set the example by generously giving their time and treasure to nonprofits in the community. “The gifts you make not only improve your community, they also connect you to it. You are rewarded when you give. It all comes back.”

JULIE BETTS BRANDAO ’84

32

For her contributions to GPS, she feels she has received one of her greatest gifts—the confidence she sees in her two daughters, Katie ’17 and Emma ’21. Katie is currently a Morehead-Cain Scholar at UNC Chapel Hill pursuing a double major in art history and computer science, a passion cultivated in AP Computer Science with Jill Pala Pieritz ’97 and AP Art History with Cathie Ault Kasch ’72.

“ T H E G I F T S Y O U M A K E N O T O N LY I M P R O V E Y O U R C O M M U N I T Y, T H E Y A L S O C O N N E C T Y O U T O I T. Y O U A R E R E WA R D E D W H E N YO U G I V E . I T A L L C O M E S B AC K .”

In addition to bringing out her innate sales and leadership abilities, her male co-workers also influenced her giving. She recalls (former Chattanooga resident) Ted King’s approaching her at age 26 for a leadership gift to the United Way. The fact that he believed she was capable of a larger gift made a lasting impression.

Emma is interested in STEM and is a member of the Computer Science Club and SWENext as well as Kaleidoscope at GPS. Her true passion is GPS fine arts, participating in the school plays and musicals. “My children are very independent and I give credit to GPS for that,” Brandao says. “They have no problem expressing their opinions. To me that is so powerful for a woman these days. They also don’t fear for the future. They are well prepared.”

Brandao with sister Katherine Betts ’76

That same trademark GPS confidence contributed to Brandao’s becoming the first and only female partner in her firm, Huffaker & Trimble Insurance. She transitioned to vice president when the firm was bought by BB&T Insurance Services in 2005 (now known as McGriff Insurance Services).

Brandao continues to walk out the example set by her parents, Cliff and Sally Betts, and her mentors by contributing to various causes that strengthen her beloved city. She currently serves on the boards for the CHI Memorial Foundation, WTCI, Siskin Children’s Institute, and the Calsted Foundation. She’s a former trustee of another alma mater, The Bright School, and was part of American Heart Association’s Circle of Red in 2011 and 2017. GPS honored her as a 2013 Woman of Distinction and the recipient of the Margaret Rawlings Lupton Award of Excellence in 2014; she currently serves on the GPS Board of Trustees' risk committee.

And while an all-girls environment shaped Brandao with her formative years, she is quick to credit daughter Emma ’21 her male mentors for helping her grow Over the years Brandao has supported both professionally and personally. In fact, a multitude of organizations, both financially and through she never would have entered the insurance business had Bob various volunteer roles. Some of these include Chattanooga Huffaker and Roger Smith not recognized her potential. Downtown Rotary, Chattanooga Area Food Bank, Chattanooga Women’s Leadership Institute, American Heart Association, “I had just moved back to town and was working for Junior and American Cancer Society. Her number one philanthropic Achievement,” she recalls. “I was pitching Bob for a sponsorpriority is her church, St. Paul’s Episcopal, where she currently ship, but after my presentation he asked if I’d ever thought co-chairs the stewardship committee. But GPS remains high on about getting into the insurance business, and immediately her list. Since graduating from Vanderbilt University 31 years introduced me to Roger.” ago, Brandao has not missed a year of giving to GPS, noting it is not the amount that matters as much as the action. Huffaker and Smith’s instincts were correct. Hired in 1991 to help build the firm’s personal insurance department, Brandao eventually took over the department. Her very first customer is still with her today. Throughout the years she has served on numerous carrier panels and councils in her industry, recognized in 2016 as “Top Encompass Advocate.”

“I think it’s important for women to understand they can be influential givers,” she says. “When you step out of your comfort zone and do more than you think you can, or give more than you think you can, the rewards are greater than you can imagine. It might be hard but ultimately so worth it.”

he year was 1969. The Boeing 747 made its debut flight from Seattle to New York. The U.S. successfully launched and landed a man on the moon before any other country. And Woodstock, the 20th-century’s most iconic music festival, was held in the small town of Bethel, New York.

On the campus of GPS, members of the Class of 1969 were taking their first steps toward adulthood. During a time when mostly men became doctors, engineers, lawyers, and scientists, many from the Class of 1969 were eagerly stepping into these male-dominated fields. As individuals, they’ve achieved notable success by becoming businesswomen, architects, mothers, community activists, artists, teachers, and more. Their triumphs have led to awards, promotions, leadership positions, and numerous accolades. Their setbacks have opened doors to new ways of thinking, selfcompassion, respect, and connectivity to each other.

Over the past 50 years, collectively these women have experienced a world in which war, terrorism, health challenges, global upheaval, and noisy family turmoil have become commonplace. Despite this, they have thrived. The year is now 2019. Tesla electric cars have autopilot features that make driving nearly failsafe. The European Union has banned single-use plastic. And at the age of 14, Marsai Martin made headlines as the youngest person in Hollywood to ever produce a movie. On the campus of GPS, the Class of 1969 gathered to celebrate its 50th reunion during Alumnae Weekend in April and raised more than $74,000 for the school where it all began—the highest amount raised for a 50th class reunion. We, at GPS, deem this as quite notable.

Girls Preparatory School hosts signature event:

BRUISER BEE FOR THE THIRD YEAR IN A ROW, Bruiser Bee has provided GPS friends a fun way to celebrate our school and raise money for the Impact Fund while connecting with each other. With the 2019 event featuring a trivia challenge, tables of teams enjoyed a fabulous dinner before squaring off to see who could reign victorious as the smartest team in the room. Ultimately Team Shama Lama Ding Dong came out on top. Held at the Westin in downtown Chattanooga, Bruiser Bee was a sold-out event with nearly 300 in attendance. After all the funds were totaled—from ticket sales, sponsorships, auction items, and the paddle raise—$287,315 was raised. Of that amount, $187,315 benefitted the 2018-19 Impact Fund. The Impact Fund provides the flexible resources for GPS teachers, coaches, and administrators to create curriculum, programs, and a learning environment to inspire each girl to become exactly who she is meant to be!

48

The $100,000 pledged during the paddle raise was designated for the renovation of The C. Ben Harnsberger Student Center and to provide a new employee break room. Work on these spaces commenced the summer of 2019, with everything in place for the start of school. The Ben renovation provides the girls with a more functional and aesthetically pleasing space to study, relax, refuel, and connect with their friends and classmates. The overwhelming success of our paddle raise resulted in funding a new faculty break room, named The Landing by teacher Katye Adams Couch ’92, which provides a restorative space for our hard-working teachers and allows them the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues. Bruiser Bee serves as the major fundraiser for the school’s Impact Fund and helped the GPS Development team achieve its annual goal of $1.15 million. It could not happen without the countless hours of more than 35 volunteers who collaborated on this event.

MBD: Girl Edition 2019 MIGHTY, BRILLIANT, AND DETERMINED

girls from across our region found support and encouragement at two unique events held on the GPS campus—The Girls’ Holiday Marketplace in December 2018 and the 24Hour Generator in March 2019. More than 50 girl-powered booths lined the main gym as young vendors from private and public schools, ages 7-17, sold their products to throngs of customers at the Holiday Marketplace. Then middle school students participated in design-thinking challenges at the 24Hour Generator, where they tackled real-world problems presented to them by actual business owners and nonprofits. So impressed were some of the presenters, that they initiated follow-up sessions with their teams to solicit more ideas to implement.

To everyone who supported #girlpreneurs through MBD: GIrl Edition, thank you for attending, shopping, volunteering, donating, and sponsoring our events. This success of this program depends on the generous support of people like you!
