Albariza

The dominant bright white soil type in the Spanish DO area of Jerez, whose name means "white earth". It consists of 40% limestone with a high proportion of calcium sulphate, known here as Yeso, as well as clay and sand. It stores the rainwater of the winter months for the water supply of the vines during the summer drought. These are ideal conditions for the Palomino and Pedro Ximénez varieties and the top sherry qualities produced from them. Wines from vineyards in Albariza are classified as Superior Jerez. Albariza soils are also found in the DO areas of Montilla-Moriles and Penedès. The rather inferior, low-calcareous soil is called Arena in Spain.
