Played one full match earlier. That was intense. Definitely going to keep after it, rifleman was cool but I want to check out the other roles too. Our MG guy was pretty great, he found a spot on a roof that gave him an awesome view of our section of the battlefield, and he'd mark infantry like crazy and we'd mow them down. Ended up losing, but that was hella fun.

I'm Nostratic on Steam and I'll add you guys tomorrow.

I got it and yeah it's pretty good.

I like it a lot more than squad and post scriptum because it seems you can just pick it up and play. I'm not quite sure I could put my finger on what it is that's different about it, but you can have fun mucking around as a random player, whereas in the others I always felt if you didn't have a group to play with it was no fun. Much more like RO in that regard.

Yeah, it hits a sweet spot where you can just hop in and feel useful, but also rewards coordinated squad play. I think it may be a matter of having garrisons and outposts to spawn on, that way even if you get killed away from any medics, it's never all that long to get back into the fight. Team indicators are also very useful in letting you engage enemies without needing to be aware of the position of all your allies all the time.

Also, I finally managed to kill a tank, never felt so satisfied in this game. RIP to the teammate I accidentally blew up, your sacrifice was probably in vain.

Is there anyway to get this game to not play like its running on a woodchipper? Ive got a beefy gaming rig but the stutters and mouse smoothing and foliage breaks and everything just really screw up everything I like about it. Ive gone through reddit, Googled some solutions, changed some .ini files and even custom set the graphics according to a YouTube video or two and I still cannot get decent running consistant fps.

It starts screen tearing and dropping frames hard less than halfway into a match.

The gameplay reminds me of WW2O but it runs worse than that relic did in 2002

have you tried forcing dx12?

every game online has a bunch of bullshit ini 'fixes' or run this launch command off the shortcut bullshit, but running HLL in DX12 legit took me from unacceptable performance to like 80+ FPS instantly. I also didn't understand why it seemed to run so poorly on a machine that should crush it, but DX12 is what it took for me.

General tab click Set Launch Options and type -dx12 and hit OK.

Unlike the majority of squads in Squad, finding a talkative, chill squad in HLL seems a lot rarer and it's a large part of why I haven't stuck nearly as much time into it as I'd like to.

I’m glad there’s a thread for this game here. I picked this game up back in March when it was on sale. It has some serious potential but the lack of coordinated squads is extremely alarming. I think a large factor in it is games like Project Reality built communities for years where people understood that a mic was pretty much required, and other smaller unwritten rules like don’t spam command voice chat. I’m assuming players carried this over to Squad, but for whatever reason I never got around to playing it.

After the coming update I would be down with getting a goon squad together though. I mostly play engineer and become Lord of the Nodes but I’ve got time under other classes. I somehow manage to play this on a notebook with a 350M (low settings, 720p).

I normally find a squad with mics, but if I don't I just keep looking until I find one or start my own squad and use the mic tag and I find people who are looking to communicate will join. I mostly play on west coast servers but I would join a goon squad if someone coordinated a time we could get together. I have about 800 hours in this game now, so it's mostly all I play for the last few months.

Yeah this was the first thing I did and I did indeed notice a massive performance increase, but its still a chore to play sometimes/most times. Was on a squad earlier with someone on comms talking about some ini fixes they had done and how they increased the resolution to 2.5x and still running great, I've had no such luck but idk. I hope the devs keep refining this cause when its good its good; defending a point from a 2 story house with windows and hearing that ping of a headshot feels great!

Add in comms from a fun group and its quite an experience.

My 2 cents on improving the formula is make proxy voip and squad voip one channel, as casually sharing information to both your squad and your team is double the prize, rather than making it a chore to flip between directing fire over squad then AGAIN over proxy for those not in your group. Would make callous easier imo.

But I come from foxhole where general voip is the rule and it can have moments of chaos, I think it would work better in HLL

I've been lucky finding squads with mics. Although communication doesn't really matter much when your squad leader keeps dropping outposts directly in the enemy's line of fire.

So I looked around and found this guide for FPS increase https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2370352811

it marginally helps but honestly its better than nothing, been running tank commander for several games and my goodness is it addicting! Especially just communicating and coordinating with entire squads when you've got a competent or semi co operable command channel you can turn a losing game into an absolute stomp, we were down 1-4 on st something with big fields, and it wasn't until about 40-20 mins before the game was over did we even get the upper hand and then run on to win the game, it was hellish and awesome! Ended the game with 67 inf kills and 7 vehicle kills! I really hope they improve performance with the 1.0 launch, that's not all I ask for, but its the start

Okay, had some fun on Kursk tonight.

This patch has really improved performance, I've got at least a 10 frame improvement even in heavy battle, no noticeable chop.

The new devblog has an updated roadmap for the game, most of the things we knew about, but a few surprises in there like deployable AA guns and an Ostwind coming in the future. You can read it here: https://steamcommunity.com/games/686810/announcements/detail/2998819078306679126

I think the OP should be updated with some more information.

The game is really fun, devs support it very well with constant updates for 3 years now and a long roadmap for another two years at least (British faction, Japan & Pacific added in the future) and the game is good, a bit of a running simulator at times, but with the introduction of transport trucks and Halftracks being added soon, should help with the meta game in the near future.

Rolling around in tanks is fun, especially on Foy where the map is open enough for long range battles.

You don't need a super well coordinated team, just a squad with Mics and a half decent commander. If you're a Squadleader you can use command chat to yell at the other SLs to mark targets on the map and provide information for everyone to relay to their own squads, that is when the game shines.

Here is the past roadmap showing what has been added to the game since it launched on Steam as early access and where it will go in the next 12-16 months now that the game has reached version 1.0

Also include some of this stuff in the OP, it is all handy

Some other tips and tricks, all explained in the ingame Field Manual which explains each class, weapon, vehicle and map.

Infantry Controls
X = Command chat (red/brown colour), squad leaders and the commander can talk to eachother to coordinate the battle.
C = Squad chat, talk to your squad mates (green colour)
V = Local Chat (blue) talk to those in proximity, warn a tank there is a mine infront of him or yell for a medic over voice comms.

MMB = Ping. Very useful to warn squadmates of targets, where to go, things of interest. Brings up a small red ping marker on your squads screen and map for 5 seconds.

Z = Prone (Crtl = Crouch/stand)
G = Grenade, pull out a grenade, you can cook them before throwing to reduce the fuse timer. Right click to drop a grenade in an underarm throw over a wall or out a window.
B = Melee, stab or bash the enemy to death with a shovel, knive and in the future, bayonet.
F = Use, deploy your machine gun bipod, enter a vehicle, pick up ammo from a crate, dismantle an enemy garrison or supply crate, also pull out your bandage when wounded.
T = Tactical overlay, rings up the HUD including ammo count, weapon selected, commander/officer map markers, map sector information/location name

Vehicle Controls:
E = Start the engine or turn it off
Shift = Change Gear Up
Ctrl = Shift gear Down
Space = Handbrake for trucks (do tight cornering)
F1,F2,F3etc = Change seats, F1 is Driver, F2 is Gunner, F3 is Commander/Spotter seat in most tank and vehicles.
1, 2, 3 = Ammo type selection, for most, 1 is Armour Piercing ammo, 2 is High Explosive Ammo and 3 is smoke where applicable.
RMB = Coaxial machine gun, either as the gunner or in some tanks, the driver has a Coax MG they can shoot infront of them.

Roles

Command
Commander: Leader of your faction. Responsible for coordinating actions of all squads, maintaining a view of the overall battlefield, and for using commander abilities to do things like drop air support supplies, strafing or bombing runs, using the resources you get from resource nodes to spawn tanks and vehicles for your team.

Infantry
Officer: Lead a squad, talk to other squadleaders and commander in Command Chat (X), place down Outposts (squad spawn) and Garrisons (team spawn, requires supplies) with your pocketwatch. Hasbinoculars, frag and smoke grenades, pistol and an SMG or Rifle
Rifleman: Basic soldier, carries a rifle (M1 Garand, Kar98, Nagant), grenades and a deployable box of ammo to resupply your teammates.
Assault: close quarter combat infantry, carries an SMG (Thompson, MP40 or PPSH) or auto rifle (BAR, Geweh43, STG44) and grenades and smoke grenades depending on the loadout. Storm trenches, buildings or strongpoints.
Automatic Rifleman: Suppressive fire role. Carries either a BAR/STG44 or a Thompson/MP40/PPSH depending on loadout with some grenades and bandages.
Medic: Can revive downed teammates who are bleeding out. Use morphine to revive and bandage allies much faster than they can. Has a M1 Carbine or Kar98 in standard loadout with smoke grenades. Can unlock a pistol only loadout with extra smoke grenades.
Support: Drops supplies on the battlefield for squad leaders to build garrisons (team spawn points) or engineers to build resource nodes or defensive structures. Can place ammo crates for teammates.
Machine Gunner: Suppressive fire with your machinegun (M1919, BAR, MG42, MG43, DP-27) also carries a pistol (M1911, Luger)
Anti-Tank: Rocket launcher (Bazooka with 4 rockets, Panzerschreck with 2 rockets) or AT Rifle for Soviets. Use your wrench to construct an anti-tank gun emplacement with supplies (PAK40, 57mm M1) or place AT mines with an alternate loadout.
Engineer: The most complex role, use supplies to build fortifications (barricades, wire fence, hedgegog/belgian gates and upgrade them or place down repair stations for friendly tanks, resource nodes for the commander (Fuel, Manpower, Munitions) carries a Carbine or Kar98, AT and AP mines or an explosive satchel charge. And a repair wrench/blowtorch to repair tanks.

Armour
Tank Commander: Leader of a tank squad. Can talk to other squadleaders to mark enemy targets, carries an SMG and Binoculars.
Crewman: Drive, Shoot or Command a tank, allows you to enter friendly vehicles, carries a pistol and smoke grenades, can unlock a repair blowtorch as another loadout.

Recon
Spotter: Recon squadleader. Can place down an outpost behind enemy lines (only person who can) for snipers to spawn at. Hunt behind enemy lines and scout for your team. Has an SMG (Thompson, MP40, PPSH), smoke grenades and an anti-personnel mine.
Sniper: The onlt person ingame with a scope. Only two recon squads can exist in any team. Uses a M1903 Springfield or a Kar98k with a x8 scope.

The MG 42 is just unfair on these new, open maps, and the DP27 is really not an adequate counter. This is even more true on the stalingrad map, if you can get up on top of Pavlov's house you are just a god of death across half the map, I was getting kills at 600m+.

I'm not really sure what they could do about it other than the RO route of making the MG42 artificially useless, but maybe when the deployable MGs come around the PM1910 or the SG43 might make the gap up a bit.

I think it's that way on purpose, they know people are going to setup in that house, players just need to figure out how to deal with it or not get the point. I have had 60 kills multiple times with the garand, so 57 as an MG, while a lot, isn't game breaking.

Edit: Garand example, since it is semi-auto and one hit kill to any body part up to like 150m you can take out a whole squad easily.

Edit: Also this new St Marie Du Mont map is really nice, I only thought we were getting two maps, but this is a complete re-work and looks amazing.

The game has always had a rough time between gameplay and map design. They reworked basically all their initial map releases over the course of EA because most of them were empty fields with no cover and if an MG set up in the right place basically a quarter of the map was impassable. It can still be pretty rough and to be fair that is kind of the thing they're shooting for, meatgrinder shitholes that you have to die repeatedly to take.

Game's still super good when it all comes together and it certainly plays a lot smoother than Post Scriptum, its immediate competitor, so I'm typically willing to put up with "Ah, that same MG, from that same place, from five minutes ago" cause the minute to minute is so good.

You also get AT mines and AP mines so it's a fun class, I maxed it out.

Was Russian AT on Stalingrad, it is pretty hard to get tank kills if your team doens't have multiple garrisons around the highrise city portion of the map, need to be able to flank the tanks and get close enough for weakpoint hits.

I ended up tracking a few tanks, but when they're in the city area and assaulting pavlovs house they don't need to move if your team isn't fielding armour. Even the light tank was providing effective fire from 190m away.

Having the anti-tank gun AT loadout as level 6 for soviets isn't great, because AT mines are not effective in the very wide streets of that part of the map unless you get preparation time to build barricades on the far side of the square to funnel tanks.

But with a good flanking squad or satchel charges you can do well, just not front-on attacking a tiger with the antitank rifle, gotta hit its arse.
