What is a rhythm game?
A rhythm game is a game that involves music and hitting notes or another object charted to the song. Many of these were made in different countries, some for the arcade, some for home, and some on the PC. Some involve playing with your hands, while some involve your feets, and SOME involve full body movements (not dance central or just dance).

Rhythm Game Series (that are well known and good)

Info
Originally started as a arcade game. Created and developed by Konami. Help or created (?) by Bemani.

How to play
Four arrows are on screen, as well as on the pad. Arrows will move up the screen. When a arrow hits one of the arrow receptors, step. Hold notes are also in the game, and are green and have long like notes. Hold them until they reach the end. Mines are not introduced until DDR X, which are shock arrows. On these, you must NOT hit them or your health will be dropped drastically. Hit notes to gain health. Keep your health up and you will pass the song. Missing too many notes will cause your health to drop. If it depletes completely, you will fail the song and the game is over.

Modifiers
In the arcade, these require codes. Some can do things like reversing, removing freezes, or speedmods. On consoles, most of the time you only need to hit a certain button to open the options menu, and you can change options from there.

Info
Originally an arcade game. Published by Andamiro. Created by Andamiro, F2, Freevolt, and Nexcade.

How to play
Like DDR, except five arrows are on screen. Hold arrows are slightly different in this game. If you hold onto them, your combo goes up a lot. However, releasing them will deplete your health if you don't keep holding them. Mines are in this game on some charts, hit them and your life will deplete. Instead of dying once your health is depleted, you will fail if you do not hit 50 notes in a row.

Modifiers
These can only be accessed in Full Mode on later versions (Fiesta or later), but in earlier versions you can step a certain code to turn on speed mods or other modifiers.

In The Groove

Games (in order)
Arcade: In The Groove, In The Groove 2, In The Groove 3 (vaporware)

PS2: In The Groove

PC: In The Groove PC, In The Groove 2 (patch for ITG PC)

Info
Originally an arcade game. Developed and published by RoXoR Games. Runs using the Stepmania engine. RoXoR was sued by Konami and can no longer make the In The Groove Series.

How to play
Exactly like DDR. Mines will deplete your health. Other gamemodes are in this such as Marathon, Survival, and Battle. In Marathon, there are courses with multiple songs that have modifiers that change the playfield layout. Some may make the notes fade out, some make the receptors bump left and right to the beat, and many others. In Survival, it is exactly like Marathon. However, there is a timer. Fantastics will add time to the timer by 0.2s. Excellents do nothing. Greats (?) or lower will deplete the timer. If the timer runs out, the game is over. In Battle, you play against another player or the CPU. If you continue stepping accurately without missing, modifiers will be added to the other player. The more you step, the higher the "level" of modifiers sent to the other players will be. There is a meter at the top that shows who is winning more. Missing will cause you to move to the left (P2 winning) or to the right (P1 winning). Using a USB on In The Groove 2 will save stats to the USB drive and allow customs songs from Stepmania using oggs and a SM file. Banners, backgrounds, LUA, and animated movies are disabled for custom songs.

Modifiers
Many are included in this game. By hacking the machine, noteskins and themes can be added to change how the game looks. Different modifiers are in different sections that can add notes, remove items, hide items, speed mods, and other assorted playfield and speed changers.

Info
Originally an arcade game. Developed and published by Konami.

How to play
2 modes are available. 5 Keys Mode, and IIDX Mode (7 keys). Notes will scroll down the screen and you must hit them when they hit a red line using one of the white and black keys. There are 4 white keys on the bottom, and 3 black keys on the top. In Sirius, 2 notes are added. Charge notes, or Hold-me notes require you to hold onto the key until the note ends. Another note, called the back spin scratch, requires you to spin the scratch note on one direction continuously and spin it again to the opposite site at the end of the note. The health bar is different than most rhythm games, as there is a pass mark (red area on the bar). If you do not reach this part by the end of the song, you fail the song and the game is over. However, if you DO get to the red area, you pass and the game will continue.

Modifiers
Speed mods are available, as well as different gameplay modes. Some of these are only available in home. On the Easy modifier, the gauge doesn't decrease so quickly and rises faster than usual. On hard, however, the bar starts at 100%. However, if you miss, it will go down by 10%. Bads and extraneous hits cost 6%. However, the gauge rises by 0.16% for each great or better, and stays unchanged for Goods. In Happy Sky and later, the penalties are less harsh after 30%. If the gauge hits 0%, you immediately fail the song.

Pop'n Music

Games (in order)
Arcade: Pop'n Music 1, Pop'n Music 2, Pop'n Music 3, Pop'n Music 4, Pop'n Music 5, Pop'n Music 6, Pop'n Music 7, Pop'n Music 8, Pop'n Music 9, Pop'n Music 10, Pop'n Music 11, Pop'n Music 12 いろは, Pop'n Music 13 カーニバル, Pop'n Music 14 FEVER!, Pop'n Music 15 ADVENTURE, Pop'n Music 16 Party♪, Pop'n Music 17 THE MOVIE, Pop'n Music 18 せんごく列伝, Pop'n Music 19 TUNE STREET, HELLO! POP'N MUSIC, Pop'n Music 20 fantasia, Pop'n Music Sunny Park

How to play
Close to beatmania but has 9 keys mode instead of 7 keys. No hold notes. Has judgement called Cool, close to DDR's Marvelous! or In The Groove's FANTASTIC!. Has passmark, if not reached, song is failed. Has reach or fail goals, such as reaching a certain score, or not getting this amount of misses, bads or goods. These will add a bonus later on.

Modifiers
See How to play.

iOS: Guitar Hero (iOS)

Info
First a PS2 game. Developed by Neversoft, Harmonix, Budcat Creations and Vicarious Visions. Published by RedOctane and Activision.

How to play
This is playable using the guitar accessory or a controller, or in Guitar Hero World Tour and some others, other instruments such as a mic and drums. On Guitar, there will be a track with 5 receptors. One green, one red, one yellow, one blue, and one orange. These correspond to the buttons on your guitar controller. On the regular controller, they have different controls. For the PS2 and PS3 (I assume), L2 is Green, L1 is Red, R1 is Yellow, R2 is Blue, and Orange is X. For other systems, go read the manual. Notes will scroll towards the receptors, and you must hit them when they reach the receptors. You can not use a regular controller on World Tour or some other versions. Completely white notes that are colored are considered "stream" notes, and you can hit them without strumming. Missing will cause the guitar/instrument to go away, and the ROCK meter to go down. To keep the ROCK meter up, hit notes accurately and continuously. There are 3 areas on the meter. Green means you're doing great and doing the song right. Yellow means you've just started the song or you're doing slightly bad. Red mean's you're doing bad and you need to try harder. If it's blinking red, you need to start playing better now or you're going to fail. If it reaches the end, you fail the song. A mechanic called "Star Power" is in the game. You get it by hitting the stars that come down the track that are in a pattern, and you must hit all of them. Getting more Star Power increases the time you can use it. During this time, your multiplier is multiplied by 2. If you have 4x, it is 5x. 3x becomes 6x, 2 becomes 4x.  In Guitar Hero III and others, there are different modes. Co-Op allows one person to play guitar, and one person to play bass. They share the same ROCK meter and score, and must work together. In Face-Off, 2 players compete against eachother with different difficulties to get a higher score at the end of the song. Face-Off Pro is pretty much the same thing except you both must pick the same difficulties. In World Tour this was made so the lower your difficulty, the more score you get, for fairness. Battle Mode is like In The Groove 2's battle mode. There are certain notes where if you hit them all, you will get a power up. Raising your guitar will send the modifier to the other player. Some can cause people to lose a note to tap, and must regain it by tapping it over and over. Some make the playfield bouncy and the notes blink. If one person does not fail the song by the end, it switches to Sudden Death. All powerups are now health drain power ups, and drain the player's rock meter. Messing up will drain it even more. Whoever loses their ROCK meter, loses, and the other player wins. There are 4 difficulties, Easy, Normal, Hard, and Expert.

Modifiers
There are some, but they are considered Cheats. You must find the code for them and enter them in the cheats menu. One is autoplay, and some are speedmods.

FAQs
What can I discuss here?
Talk about ANYTHING rhythm game related. This includes posting screenshots, videos, simfiles (stepmania or in the groove customs), and other items related to it.

Where can I locate arcade machines?
Zenius-i-Vanisher's arcade locator is a good start. It includes other games for other genres as well besides rhythm games. Pump Haven's locator is also good if you're specifically looking for Pump It Up machines. It will show when the location was last updated, so don't go for it if you don't know it's still there.

Are some of the games multiplayer?
DDR, In The Groove, FoFix (not Frets on Fire) and Pump It Up are both local multiplayer. Stepmania, Rock Band, Guitar Hero, osu! and OpenITG are online multiplayer and local multiplayer. Connect to Stepmania Online's servers (stepmania-online.com) by using either the In The Groove 3 Encore theme for OpenITG, or the default theme for Stepmania. Rock Band and Guitar Hero require a Wii or PS3 with internet, and on the Xbox you require Xbox Live Gold to play online (which is stuffty). osu! is free and only requires a registration to play multiplayer.

Where can I download simfiles and themes and noteskins?
For all those, go to Divinelegy's simfile archive. These also work for Stepmania, OpenITG and In The Groove 2. I would recommend downloading them as they are fun and some are good for beginners.

Where can I download Stepmania and/or OpenITG?
OpenITG
Stepmania 5
Stepmania 3.9 (for the old skool kidz)
